I also have shih tzu..i have 2 in fact..I do agree with u that they are hard to be trained. And one of them also likes to eat her own poo..really hard to train them..I bought them when they were few weeks old only and started to train them..Now they are already 3 yrs+ but only understand the 'sit' & 'eat' command.

Last time I had a Collie..the same breed as 'Lessie'..she's very intelligent and very easy to train. She learnt the command words very fast. That's why they are known as the most intelligent dog of all breeds. But it's said that GR is the easiest dog to be trained.

In fact I have owned many dogs before since I was a little kid cos I'm a dog lover..The Collie was the 1st dog I bought..Before I owned the Collie, I had reared more than 10 dogs..All of them were stray dogs which came to me at the same time from nowhere. And I managed to train some of them which were really obedient. Whereas for my shih tzu, I have completely given up.

I have Cuppy(mix breed - last time) and Prince (GR - now), I would agreed easy train... 3 months almost learn all the command (sit, hand, down, come, catch , up stay and more). However as i did mention in forum they will forget sometime... need to always remind them...

But for my mix breed... it need more time and effort to train them...

Just my sharing

Weird huh..I thought mix breed should be more intelligent..just like nowadays police they cross-breed labrador and retriever and then train them to help in investigation..

No cert la, can go meh? Sorry I dont know much about dogs. Where is the event held? If there's some obedience training class, I would like to attend because Casper does not understand what "COME" means even. I have to add he has only been home for two days now. I doubt if he knows Casper is his name.

How do you guys decide in between doing dog biz indoor or outdoor? I live in a double storey terrace. I have a newspaper set up indoor at my living room, next to a unused piano. Everytime he does his biz elsewhere indoor, I will scold him, point to the poo, scold the poo even and then bring him to the newspaper and tell him to poo there, pat his head and tell him good dog. So far it have NOT work.

At the same time, whenever we let him out after he wakes up, we have to go out with him. In the house compound, he will do his biz anywhere outdoor. When I say outdoor here, it means my house compound. Not too big for a double storey.

So, I'm kinda worried here if he will get confused, to poo outdoor or poo on the newspaper. At the same time, should I just keep him indoors, so all his biz is done to the newspaper?

Also, at the piano, he sees his own reflection. Will it affect doing his biz at all? Like somebody watching him. At first, he was so afraid he walked backwards, now its better, he dare to walk there now.

Two things I have to ask... dog odor, how to get rid? Also, his hind legs are always use to scratch somewhere near his testicles or inner thigh, when I look at it, nothing seems wrong - no rashes even though thats what I thought first... I am sending him to his check up and another jab on Saturday. Hope he doesnt puke again.

As for me, Last time I trained my Collie to do her business on the newspaper too..when I 1st bought her, I tied her at a place where I wanted her to pee/poo and laid newspapers at that place..I would tie her there until she did her business, then I released her..I roughly guess her business time, then tie her there again until she did her business. The whole process kept repeating for a few days. Then after that she knew her place to do business already:) (perhaps that place had her urine smell)

Because I have been with my puppy, Casper for 12 hours straight today, I feel rather tired to keep up with him. It's 8.30pm and he crawled back into his cage and went to sleep. I feel bad for caging him but I cant afford him to poo and pee all over the house in the night.

What time does a 2 - 3 months old puppy usually sleep? Is 8.30pm a little too early? I feel so much guilt and hope that the whole house-breaking process will speed up so he can come sleep with me in the night.
*
Well..I don't think there's a specific time for dogs to sleep..They sleep anytime of the day
You planned to let him sleep with you in future? Aren't you afraid that their fur may cause asthma? cause at certain time of the year, the dogs will shed alot of fur..that's very dangerous if you let him sleep with u..

Yea, since its not fully vaccinated, I dont think I will be able to bring him. Somemore, he's not ready for car rides. Two rides, two pukes. Poor thing.

Yea, house breaking is my major problem. As long as it can pass through this, I will let it roam free in the house, rather than keep it caged all the time. I have already decided to let him do his biz indoor, at the living room because I worry going to the kitchen may be a trip too far for little Casper. So I put the newspapers at the end of the living room, near the dining hall and next to a piano. Between the living room and dining hall is a wooden door, we usually keep it closed so he dont go to the back of the house (dining hall and kitchen) without us noticing.

I am still wondering if his reflection on the piano will have any affect on the housebreaking training effectiveness. Will he see his reflection, get too scared and run away, will never pee on the newspaper placed there?

Also, I noticed, he dont quite like the smell of newspaper, I THINK! I hold him there and usher him to the newspaper, he smell and he will back off and go away. Is this normal? Anyone else's dog is like this?

Ok, I wont scold it anymore from today onwards, positive training. This whole GRAB CHANCES thing you mentioned is kinda difficult because he's a speedy!! He dont pee like other dogs I've seen, not one-legged up but rather kangkang his leg to pee and poo, the same.

Like this morning, put him out of the cage, 20 minutes he dont poo / pee but when I was on the phone, he poo and I had to throw my phone onto the sofa to quickly catch him and bring him to the newspaper. Only a drop of poo landed on the newspaper, the rest was on the floor but luckily its hard poo, not watery, else sure die when mom see. When one poo dropped on the newspaper, I pushed his head down, tap him and praise him.

Regarding the whole sleeping issue, I just feel bad for caging him but I cant afford him to poo / pee the whole house, else mom would slaughter him and eat him up. Anyway, thanks for all your advise.

Oh yea, anything I can do bout dog odor?
I think it's really unhygenic to let him do his business indoor..you know..the aroma.. rclxub.gif I feel that it's better to let him do it outdoor..
As for dog odor..get a good and suitable shampoo and bathe him once or twice a week..and I'll alo recommend you the dog powder which is used to apply on their body just like how we humans apply baby powder.

That's a short cut way to do his business? Ok, I will give it a try. By the way, how old was Collie when you trained her like that?
Sorry for the super late reply Pennywise, I was away from home for 6 days..
I started training my Collie when I first bought her, that was when she's only 3 months old..It's important and easier to train dogs when they're young =)
So did you give my way a try? How did it go?

Garlic is a good repellent for bugs. You can add a bit of garlic to your dog's meal while using flea/tick shampoo.

But then again, garlic is good repellent for EVERYTHING (Including you) !  rclxm9.gif

Really? Garlic helps? I didn't know that..But as for me, I got a flea solution from the vet, it's quite good and effective. I don't know what's it called becos there's no label on it. The smell is very strong..some sort like termite medicine or something. It's used after bathing the dog, and then mix some water to the solution (cos it's very concentrated) and bathe the dog with it. No need to rinse off.

1. I bought a non-slip mat from Giant for RM9. It has 6 pieces and when put together, its quite large. I put this in his play-pen so he wont shred the newspapers to bits. Now, I am worried that this non-slip mat smells different and he wont go poo / pee on it.

Well, I don't quite get u..I mean how will the non-slip mat help in stopping Casper from shreding the newspapers..Mind to explain in more detail please?

2. My dog isnt eating his dog biscuit recently. I wonder why. The portion I cut down a bit but then he only eat a bit, walk away to rest or begs to come out to play. Why wont he eat? The dog biscuit, he eat 1/3 of the whole big bag already but now he is so reluctant to finish. Put his bowl in his cage for 4 hours, STILL NOT FINISH! WHY? How do I resolve this?

Maybe Casper is bored with the taste..he'll continue like this for a few days..but don't worry he'll "appreciate" the food more when he's really hungry smile.gif

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Jan 29 2007, 01:50 AM)
3. Casper still pees on the floor and then he runs away. He 'probably' knows its wrong and was testing my patience so I walk after him quietly and caught him, take him to his pee spot and push him down, then I take a rolled-up newspaper and smack the ground and shouted NO! Then he would struggle. The next two times I hit on the ground, he struggled for his life like that rotating his neck left and right... I scared break. Any better advise?

I think that's the best method u used..I used to train my dogs that way too..no need to pity her too much..like that she'll learn better and faster.

4. My dog hardly ever sleeps. Whenever I go downstairs, I will see him awake. I come home, I will see him awake. Maybe he still feel unsafe at home. But whenever I hit the ground when he simply potty, later on, he will head-low-low come manja with me.

Actually Casper does sleep..is just that everytime when u walk down the stairs or nearly reaching home, she already sensed u from far and get excited..that's why u always see her awake..it's actually u woke her up..so don't worry k smile.gif

Wow... thanks for the speedy reply. I place the non-slip mat over the newspaper. So the newspaper is under that piece of non-slip mat made out of rubber. The newspaper is beneath it. I just worry he get confused with the whole smell idea because newspaper smell probably covered by the rubber non-slip mat.

I see...well..I don't think that's a good idea..1st : the change of smell..2nd : it's inconvenient bcos after Casper does his business..u'll have to wash the mat and clear the newspaper..there's an extra work..without the mat, u'll just have to clear the newspapers..Puppies at this age they tend to bite anything they see..teach him not to bite the newspapers.

Regarding feeding, leave the food there for 5 mins, if Casper din finish it, take it away, feed him at the next seesion.

Gradually, he will learnt that he has to appreciate what is given, or else he will lose it.

Yeah true..haha I totally forgotten about this until u mentioned cos my mum's the one who feeds the dogs tongue.gif Thanks for reminding biggrin.gif
