Really? Garlic helps? I didn't know that..But as for me, I got a flea solution from the vet, it's quite good and effective. I don't know what's it called becos there's no label on it. The smell is very strong..some sort like termite medicine or something. It's used after bathing the dog, and then mix some water to the solution (cos it's very concentrated) and bathe the dog with it. No need to rinse off.
*
Oh, those normally packed into bottles without brand one actually is "Tactic" if i din spell it wrongly, it comes in a big bottle, so normally vets & petshops will repack it.

I think I am going to change my dog food from Pro Plan to Nutri Sauce, just came back from a Pet Store, they told me that Pro Plan and many other brands use the internals of the chicken and etc to grind into these dogs biscuits meanwhile Nutri Source is pure meat only, no intestine, liver or internals or chicken / beef / lamb. Super premium.
*
It called by products, it is commonly believed that since we human do not eat these internal thingys since it is deemed unhealthy, we should also avoid such ingredients for our dogs.

I would suggest if you are keen to train your dog faster, do spend the whole weekend, stick with your dog whole day long. Then you wont miss the moment he do his business, or some bad habits, or maybe some chances to praise him at the right time. It will be most efficient to catch the right moment which is few seconds & it happens ONLY few times a day. All depends on how much time & effort you spent, of corse patience & love must come too.

Well when i get my 1st maltese - Tiffany, im able to train her basic things like pee & poo on paper, sit, hand etc using 3 almost FULL days. Which means i spent the Friday, Saturday & Sunday with Tiffany.

But now i've more dogs, so it takes longer time & cant teach them too many tricks.

That's what i'm trying to say, how fast it is really depends on how much effort & time you put in. smile.gif

If your dog did it on the carpet previously, the smell will be still there, they tend to pee at the place where there is such smell, hence repeatly do the business there.

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Jan 21 2007, 11:03 PM)
I got two questions...

1. My Westie's ear... one side up, one side down. Will the one down ever come up? Any precaution I have to take?

2. When shower puppy, can we shower the face? Or keep the water away from the face and shoulder/neck down only?
*
You should feed good quality dog food, lack of nutritions such as protein might not help u see, but it is common for puppy ear to raise one by one.

We have to shower the face, for westie which has a longer nose, put your finger across the nose, press the face down then shower, means the water will flow across your hand not towards the nose.

Sometimes hitting might bring negative effect, but doing it at the right time & with appropriate manner might help, though not everybody agrees that it is the best way.

For example if we were to hit a dog when he simply pee or poo, then the dog might misinterpret that it is wrong in your eyes to pee & poo, so they might hide when pee or poo or wait until you cant see him, means more headache.

So always make sure your dog will understand before proceed with any sort of punishment.

If it is possible, feed it at fixed time, then you will find that things are more managable since if the dog used to the same routine, normally he will do the same thing at the same time, then you can arrange your time appropriately.

I suppose your shih tzu is a pup? So it is common he cant hold his bladder, when he is in his playpen, he can easily find the newspaper, when he is roaming out there, he will feel too happy & when he wants to pee, he cant hold it, & he cant find the newspaper nearby, so he will juz pee or poo as it is. So maybe you can slowly increase the area for him to roam around.

If you are worry your dog will step on the pee, you can use the pad for dogs to pee & poo rather than newspaper, it cost a little more but it is much more hygenic, currently i'm using it & i'm very satisfied with it.

Besides showing him what you does not like, at the same time you have to show him what do you like him to do by praising him a lot, after sometimes, he will understand & will tend to do things that you will praise him rather than those that you will say NO!

Regarding feeding, leave the food there for 5 mins, if Casper din finish it, take it away, feed him at the next seesion.

Gradually, he will learnt that he has to appreciate what is given, or else he will lose it.

White Palance, thx for the reply.

But how can I prevent him from stepping on his own urine IF i insist on using newspaper to paper train him ??

Wud kinda snacks/treats should I get?? I wanna praise him when he did something good and guai ..  biggrin.gif .  I sked later he's confused that I only noe how to scold him "NO".
*
To me, it really depends on the particular dog, some of my maltese will feel very geli if they touch slightly on pee but some juz step all over! So i've decided to use the pads as it can absorbs effectively. You can also refer to others' suggestions which i feel they are very good too!

Treats for my dogs will be their own dog food, special treats juz once in a while.

And then I dunno if it's normal or not .. My shih tzu's face stinks!! I jz sent him for basic grooming on saturday nite and now his face stinks already.  The smell is covering my entire room  doh.gif .  Got any solution to this ??  Can i get baby wipe to clean his face daily ??

Pennywise,
Carrefour or Jusco or Tesco got sell ??  Or it's only available at petshop ?
*
Is it all around the face or is it due to tear stain? These are what you can do:

1) Use a drinking bottle instead of bowl to contain water.

2) Clean up the ears EVERYDAY.

3) Wash the dirty area everyday & make sure you dry it up, not dry enought will cause more stains.

4) Apply cornstarch on the stain area.

5) Provide filtered water & food without colorings!

Hey thanks for your feedback on the advantages of the non-slip mat. I really appreciate this but I think recently, my Casper has stopped walking in circles. Thus, I cannot find any sign of him wanting to do his biz. This gets more difficult each time.

As for the food, I dont keep them for the next session as I mixed his doggy biscuits with milk powder and a little water, making it soggy. I doubt it can be kept for the next session. I believe it's going to be unhealthy for them.

I dont use DETTOL like you do. I use Febreze. I will try to use DETTOL when I run out. I do admit DETTOL is much cleaner but a bit dangerous if not cleaned properly.

He WILL sleep? But the problem is I never catch him with his eyes closed before... Not even once.
*
How old is Casper currently? And what brand of milk you are feeding? If Casper's teeth already grown out, you should start letting him to chew on kibbles instead, to encourage healthy building of teeth.

Yah he does sleep, but i'm sure your dog is very alert. If your dog never sleep, then he cant tahan la. sweat.gif

Most importantly, purchase from the breeder, pay them a visit, screen through the condition, if you feel you are satisfied, then DONT BUY YET. Visit few more, and make the best decision.

But of corse, before you make any decision, you have to be prepared & do lots of research regarding the breed, as well as how to train a puppy. Gooluck on your search for another family member which will stay with you for another 10 or more years to come.

Regarding shampoo, there are testimonials even from show breeders that some of human shampoos suits their dogs well.

Personally i would prefer dog's shampoo, as i believe the ph is appropriate but i would choose good brands.

Anyway, it is still depends on you, if a particular shampoo suits your dog well, why not? smile.gif
