I remember seeing somewhere saying that the carnival will be at Altissia, but I am not even there yet. How can one participate in the carnival if we haven't progress that far into the story?

managed to download and play the carnival over the CNY holidays~

i completed the fishing quest and also mini quests, except for Chocobo racing and the Arena stuff. Cannot be bothered.

the fishing rod and reel is not too bad, especially the reel.

I used the reel won in the carnival, plus one of the DLC purchased rod and caught bloody Murk Grouper, which surprisingly is not difficult, you just need to focus for about 10-15 minutes.

Medallions won is good to exchange for those Cid's sidequest and basically that's it.

Hoping the Feb 21 patch is good, wondering what does that level cap mean?

i won the basic race, but dun remember getting the trophy. Damn. Tried the 2nd race, but couldn't get it right I just gave up.

Grind for AP and max the AP for the camping skills, cook team member favourite food to gain additional AP (which requires you to unlock it first)
unlock skill for gaining AP via chocobo rides and via the car
Warp strike 1 shot kill off weak enemies can net you extra AP
Using magic will net you extra AP (requires unlocking the skill first)
Fishing is necessary, you can upgrade your fishing skill by fishing consistently and getting AP
Diff fish need to use diff fishing bait, time and weather is also a concern
Galdin Quay is a good place to do your fishing, as the fishing will net you fillet to sell and you can get AP pretty fast
Once you have sufficient AP, unlock the skill that allows camping food status to last longer, then strength and vitality n hp level
Unlock chochobro's technique and any other things that maybe useful for you depending on your gameplay style

i don't use the royal arms at all, but I ady gotten Ultima Blade and have roam around extensively to get pretty good weapons/ acc
i do a lot of hunts and sidequest which boost exp, gil and some AP along the way. I save them and then 1 shot go to galdin quay hotel to gain more exp.

this is what I did for my own game la, currently at chap 3 level 51 and coming close to hunter rank 5. max out all their skills and techniques d
ascension i left only those above 99AP i didn't bother
changing weapons and acc to fight your enemy is important

i just enjoy the game and i take my time to explore to area
i don't actually grind grind but it comes along as I run around the area by foot, before i had the chocobo n the car
