Power consumption & temperature

I'm sure some would be interested with the power consumption & load temp - during idle & load. Here, I use HyperPi 32M as reference for the following reasons:
  1. HyperPi 32M utilizes 8 cores during load
  2. HyperPi 32M is one of the quick test for minimum overall stability (there are more recognized tool like Prime95 but to prime @ 5GHz is sweat.gif

Judging from the info above, I'd say the power consumption of Vishera is quite impressive (for stock & 4.4GHz). But unfortunately when the frequency is @ 5GHz, watt pulled from power socket is abit over the ceiling. Come to think of it, no one would really run those kinda setup for 24/7 so still OK to my book. tongue.gif

For stock clock, idle temp is good @ 34'C, load temp @ 50'C ain't really too bad for an octa-core (or some called 4 cores 8 threads) chip. biggrin.gif

@ 4.4GHz, idle temp @ 37'C is slightly higher than stock frequency due to power draw (& frequency). I was amazed by the load temp @ 51'C, just 1'C higher than stock frequency while being 10% faster (in frequency of course). flex.gif

@ 5GHz, idle temp @ 46'C not really alarming but slightly high for my preference. It's the load temp @ 78'C that worried me. But again, it is OK for quickie bench & definitely not healthy for day-to-day operation. Even if the chip can survive (the volt & heat) but it wont do the pwm (of mobo) any good. icon_question.gif

Other attempt

IMC @ 2600MHz | Ram @ 2400MHz CL10
user posted image

From what I remember, it's was very2 challengin to run IMC @ 2600MHz on Bulldozer, but with Pile-driver (Vishera), this can be achieved without much hassle. One thing I noticed is when IMC & ram being pushed to the max, it takes lotsa vcore & NB HT voltage in order for the setup to be at least HyperPi 32M stable > something new to me. hmm.gif

Quick wrap up

It's been a fun ride tweaking Vishera. I really enjoyed pushin the chip together with the board & the GSkill ram. I gotta thank sir Shrek & AMD SG for the opportunity to do a quick review for the chip. notworthy.gif

Here are some of my thoughts on the Vishera system:

on Vishera chip
Noticeable improvement on CPU, IMC & ram mileage. Bulldozer was OK but hindered by high load temp & power draw, as well as limited IMC & CPU frequency. With Piledriver, I can safely say power consumption has been improved, the proof would be 5GHz attainable (without throttling) using AIO cooler like H100, which slightly better than top end air cooler. Apart from that I'm happy to see 200MHz boost on IMC frequency (24/7 capable) over its predecessor. rclxms.gif

on ASUS M5A99X EVO R 2.0
ASUS makes best AMD boards, period. tongue.gif From great software support like AI Suite II to awesome BIOS (for overclocking) & rock solid components, their boards always deliver. The best part is one doesn't really need to splurge big on premium series like Sabertooth/ROG, the mainstream series in EVO can get the job done pretty well. Of course, higher end series are always welcome since they offer more features & possibly better mileage. wub.gif

Last but not least, I'd like to thank all the bros who've spent time readin this quick review. With all the craze on Haswell it takes more than just time for one to view a thread which is related to AMD. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, time is hard for AMD (especially after the failure on Bulldozer) but I see some silver linings with Vishera & hopefully its successor (Streamroller) will be even better. brows.gif

thanks for d kind words guys. i hope i did ok. blush.gif

vishera is really fun to play with. wonder how 4300 fare... with less cores d mileage might be better due to lower load temp... drool.gif

thx bro, am pretty sure d MHz can be pushed slightly high but at d expense of high load temp & power consumption so i just stop @ 4.4GHz. wink.gif

nice hoots bro... drool.gif

yeah, for d price it's excellent for an octa-core chip, power consumption is good as long as u keep d volt & clock under d ceiling. thumbup.gif

saber r2.0 is nice, lotsa temp sensors & nice mileage too. but for me i always go for best bang for bucks (in other word being cheapskate) hence d evo board. tongue.gif

Hi Sir,

Does OC your CPU increase the performance rate of your GPU as well?

depends on appls, but i think most gpu intensive appls wont be benefited (or perf increased is negligible) from high cpu clock. i could be wrong thou. smile.gif

This processor is hot but with proper cooling, it's never an issue.

It's my favorite FX processor and hitting 4.4ghz is a piece of cake.

The best AMD processor so far. The FX 9370 / 9590 is no where near it when it comes to value.
