QUOTE(totti 10 @ Oct 15 2013, 07:30 PM)
The firm that i am joining has 9-7pm average according to the hiring manager, and he says that is pretty much the average in the industry. I think for goldman sachs they have a longer working hours compared to the other firms, and research on the internet also confirmed this. But they do pay alot more.

This will be the first time i am joining a european company, i think their working culture is good, from what i learned during the interview. The manager even asked me to hang out this weekend for some drinks n sheesha to casually meet my future team and casually discuss about my future challenge jumping from engineering to banking.

Btw i have been in sg for 2years, just not really active here recently

You know the rule of averaging; mathematical algorithms can be crafty to suit the context. I think he meant 9 to 7pm on average including weekends. That's 70 hours per week - on average.

The sheesha session is probably to download the industry glamour and what it takes to be like him. Meaning making him your role model. In the industry, it is stamina that drives the continuity. The novelty of your basic pay and bonus worns out pretty fast - 3 months I reckon.

It is the tiered rewards of pps solitaire, spg Starwood, Hilton and etc that keeps the momentum going. And the soul searching starts when you have your first break up while at the job. Vicious cycle, but always respect the guys who succeed in the system. It takes balls and endless consistency to prevail but only great minds will succeed.

Good luck in your new job. I bet it is more demanding then your friendly interviews.
