i wanted cool off the modem as well but cant see much alternative besides ur way there... others even create a new box for it which is time consuming and a bit dangerous >_<.

Im gonna take all the risk and mod a brand new modem..since my modem always die 1 month or so after the waranty...gotta go to lowyat to hunt for the modem....heatsink...fan....and thermal compound.

Any way to mod the fan without using external/additional power supply. I don't think Ramsinks work. My Aztech modem is so hot that I placed it vertically. Opening the unit does not help. There is a 2cm heat radiation from the modem. This is also my fault since I used the old aztech modem adapter on the new unit (I thought it was the same) since the modem is the same, but the new one requires less voltage. I successfully pumped in additional power and when I revert to the old modem, the modem is too weak to be used- so now staying with the old adapter and new modem.

bro i have an idea. why dont you remove the LAN LED. than using another LED, you can tap the power from there and have a nice blinking effect on the fan while you're surfing.....

Yo shah, since ure 1 of the electronics experts here. Just wanna ask bout those modem LEDS. They're running on 5V or 12V? I wanna solder sum wires in parallel to the LED n power sum blue LEDs n a 40mm fan for my acrylic modem.

the modem LED should be running at around ~2V only. you can connect another LED in parallel but if you find that the LED became too dim, you'll have to remove the original modem LED. for powering your fan, i think most modem runs from a 9V adaptor. just tap the power directly from the adaptor connector on your modem boards. but please make sure the adaptor is DC. i've seen a modem use an AC adaptor with the bridge diode inside the modem.

now now, dont cry yet...there's still a way to do it. the LED mod can be done just fine. the fan will be a bit tricky. you need to find the bridge diode output and tap the power for your fan from there. very easy to do. btw what is the voltage output of your AC adaptor? maybe i can help you if you have a high res picture of the modem boards

actually i already voided my warranty...

i opened up the casing 2 weeks after i got my modem,

but i managed to ensure the void seal looking like it was not tampered with....

i dunt know, since the modem is given by tmnut... and it is still new, but it is REally HOT !! crazy Zte Modem....

anyways...

maybe i can just find a Zte Modem which is spoilt and replace the casing.... 1 casing at stock, the other one i can mess around with

Power for the fan:

that rounded thing is not bridge diode look at the picture below (ianho's modem). see those 2 caps that i pointed at. one of them is the power filter caps and you can tap the power for your fan from the +ve leg of that cap. just measure the voltage and the one that have the closest voltage to the output of your adaptor is the one. i think its the cap that is closest to your adaptor port.

now if the voltage is higher than 12V, you could use LM7812. this voltage regulator will reduce the voltage to 12V.

LED:

what is the value of the resistor? why dont u try connecting the LED without a resistor.

i feel sad....i just opened up my aztech modem thinking i wanna stick one of my old NB heatsinks on the main chip....ended up the chip is friggin small and the caps n wat not around the chip prevent me from putting the heatsink on it....the only way i can think of putting heatsinks on the chips is by using 2 of the CM ramsinks....and sadly...im fresh out of those
