Like richx likes to say, 18-200vr isn't that great. Just useful for convenience. But for me, I can live with its compromises and absolutely loving it.

APO for sigma is like ED for Nikon. Low dispersion glass. Having this = better optical quality but more expensive of course.

Edit:
"In order to attain the highest quality images, the APO lens has been made using special low-dispersion (SLD) glass and is designed to minimize color aberration.
SIGMA's APO zoom lenses minimize color aberration. As the refractive index of glass depends on the wavelength of light, color aberration occurs when different colors form images at different points. This problem often occurs with telephoto lenses, but the Special Low-Dispersion (SLD) glass and Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) used in SIGMA's APO lenses helps to compensate for color aberration, thereby allowing them to produce of sharp images."

the sigma 70-300 versions have been known to be a "budget" lenses or beginner lenses, most users starts off with this lens before upgrading to bigger and better optics quality, for example, the 70-200 f2.8.

My opinion of this is that, get the 70-300 first but do remember that, when a lens has a wide focal length, quality are usually compromise.

I suggest why dont you figure out, which focal length that you use most often and buy a lens that cover that range. A few short range lens to make up a range from 10-200mm. that would be ideal. In terms of quality.

just my dua sen.

Why don't you look up the Nikkor DX 55-200? I heard this lens performs beyond the money you pay for it. I would personally skip over the 28-200 and 28-300 offerings. The 70-300 pair (which are optically the same, save for some additional coating on the DG model) are not sharp beyond 200mm, so I would pass on that too. Heck, why lug extra weight of a full-frame lens around? Try the DX 55-200 - you might like it ...
