[quote=zahirani,Jul 9 2013, 02:06 PM] Yes it is possible. I completed my PhD in 6 semesters (starting from registration [June 2009] to the submission of the thesis [September 2012]) not including the viva examination. My viva examination [Dec 2012] is after 3 months of my thesis submission. I did my PhD in USM. Graduated April 2013 and currently as a lecturer in IIUM. It is certainly not easy but not impossible. [/quote U starightly go to phD or pursuing master first?

Actually, the period of graduation is very subjective. When u perform very well in term of publications, there are some lecturers that would like to squeeze out more from u. I have one friend who have published 10 papers with impact factors ranging from 1 to 5 smth but the lecturer does not want to release him. Now is his 8 semesters and the lecturer keep on saying the results are not enough for phd level. When he referred back to his seniors thesis, it seems that he has 3 times the amount of results presented by his senior

I'm in my 8th semester too, but it's mostly because I keep having to add more to my research. I'm pretty sure a 10-chapter thesis is a new record for my department.

Well I completed mine after 2y 8m + 1 month to wait for viva and 1 day to do + submit correction. I got 2 journal publication + 5 international conference. Engineering field.
Dedication is the key, and I use to sleep most night of the week at the lab and more so during the thesis writing time.

Possible. Most of the PhD friends I know graduate in less than 6 semesters (3.5 years). But they are really dedicated. Some of them even skipped masters. All computer science related.

Getting Started

You go through these processes and eventually obtain your PhD if you can sustain the pressure.
Ambigious and hardworking stage, arrogant and complaint stage, confidence losing and hardworking stage and graduation.
Mimimum graduation is 2 years and very possible to graduate in 3.5 years. Put a date as reference only and enjoy your research.
Not healthy to fix a rigid time for PhD graduation. No difference as telling bf/gf that going to marry after 3.5 years dating. Who gurantee? Relationship should be stressful.

QUOTE(tboxmy @ May 11 2015, 07:51 PM) Surely a good supervisor will help? i continue the project i did during my master study. so require minimum literature works. plus i already know all the methodology and characterization required to collect relevant data. and having a helpful and hardworking supervisor really helps completing phd in 3 years.

Getting Started

QUOTE(Madonna Britney @ May 11 2013, 04:33 PM) I'll be continuing my PhD very soon this September. I am just curious whether it is possible for me to finish my PhD in 3 and a half years. What should I do to reach this goal? FYI I don't have experience in Masters and I had a little bit of experience in research but I like to research and read a lot. I am a fresh graduate who graduated last year. I will do fast track to PhD in Biological Science. Strive for it. I completed my PhD in 2.5 years. A thesis and 3 publications may I know which university?

There are lot of examples where easiest PhD project can get you a lot of publications. Examples can be found a lot in one of the IPTA. 13 publications but easiest project. So yeah, choose the easiest one.
