Any of you guys mate a 5470 with ssd yet?

i bought 5470 (rm2149) laptop.. then bought myself Crucial m500 ssd, but the ssd wont work. I called up dell, they say 5470 got 2 kind.. 1 is 5470 notebook, and 1 is 5470 ultrabook.. somehow the rm2149 is notebook, thus does not support SSD. its kinda stupid excuse, but heck. anyone manage to get it anything work?

or should i just get mSata?

'dell' technician said, the one in ultrabook series. probably gonna have stickers..
IMO, dell is just giving lame excuse.. my 7 years old pc can use SSD with no problem lol, why newer dell cant support. At first, they even try to convince me how SSD port is different than sata. lol

You mean a full SATA Crucial M500 SSD? And you swap out the HDD with the SSD?
Should work without any problem.
btw, did you clone the HDD content over? Is the UEFI set to ACHI?

The bios will hang, thus no further testing.
Bios simply wont get past through if m500 SSD is plugged in.

what do you mean BIOS won't pass through? There is no such thing  BIOS is in ROM, not affected by any hardware change.
when you press the power up button, quickly press F2 or F8 or F12, it will lead you straight into UEFI (BIOS).

Spam any bios button, it wont go into bios setting. The laptop will stuck at black screen with dell logo

Do you mean this spec? This one already has a mSATA SSD in standard spec, should not have any problem to take in a full SSD (or you can swap a bigger mSATA SSD in and wade into UEFI to turn it from caching to storage).

don't know if TS actually is able to resolve the issue 
I'm not sure how experience he / she is with laptop, whether he / she went into UEFI to change it to Boot from USB 1st (since he / she decided not to clone the HDD) and use USB boot disc in order to install OS (that should be done before he / she swapped out the HDD) ... 
anyway, afaik, no laptop models have UEFI that "lock out" SSD (it's just normal SATA connection as far as UEFI / BIOS is concerned).

the issue could be slightly different. in that video (it's not very clear), that guy was able to get into BIOS (but I'm not sure whether it was before or after the SSD swap in), but TS claimed he / she could not get into BIOS at all 

one hypothesis I had was the boot process was faster than TS was used to previously with HDD, and he / she did not press F2 quick enough, and boot hit the SSD, which was blank without OS, and stuck there 

please allow us to clarify on your queries. For your information, our Vostro 5470 has come out with 2 version, normal laptop and ultrabook.

1. Normal laptop.
* It has come with normal HDD, mSATA SSD but it is not support SSD as the primary hard disk

2. Ultrabook
* It has only come with SSD but this Ultrabook is not available in Malaysia at the moment.

Hope this clarifies.

May I know the reason why it does not support SSD? It's just a standard 2.5" SSD which would fit that HDD slot. If possible, I hope the technical team can come up with a reasonable solution to this as this is a turn off for me and a lot of people.

Almost every other laptop in the market can easily install an SSD without any hiccups so I'm not sure why this is the case for the Vostro 5470.

Hi Kevin, we understand your eagerness for upgrading the SSD, however, due to the motherboard compatibility issue, it is unable to support SSD. We have a customer upgrade this model from HDD to SSD, but end up his laptop unable to boot up.

Just buy Msata(128gb)..  And install your window...  Ur hdd as backup

yeah, dell already add in additional options for vostro 5470 which come with mSATA.
nice option there for those who lazy to upgrade by themselves.

Make sure to buy halfsize msata

did you clone the boot drive along?

LOL at dell comments.. sorry i was late, my gf laptop have NO PROBLEM running with SSD alone..

yes. so far no problem...ssd (7mm, 9mm wont fit) in place of hdd.. Not mSata.

please ensure when you clone, clone the boot drive (system partition) alone..

it took me an hour to get it correct.. it is not as difficult as my asus g55vw --> msata..   maybe i should open up shop..LOL 

do you have any other win cd other than recovery disk? need to know hows the recovery disk install the windows. you need to identify the boot drive [EFI system partition].

try to install using windows cd (not recovery) you wont have much problem.

This is probably why they are not bundling the SSD deal in the new 5470.

when u say u not taking it out, u mean u not taking the laptop out or not taking the battery out?..

anyway, my concern is that the battery cannot be removed even when the comp is plugged into a power outlet.

am worried that this will shorten the lifespan of the battery...but then again, i read online that nowadays the battery life wont b affected juz because the lappie is plugged into a power outlet...thats y i'm a bit confused there.

No problem, I am also thinking of getting this model for my sis haha. The issue cannot install ssd is bugging me though.

In short, nothing wrong with non-removeable batteries. If you are not unlucky, the battery should last for few years. These kind of battery reduces the laptop weight a lot, I went lowyat plaza yesterday & wow, this laptop is light lol. Almost as light as my zenbook 

Was thinking of the asus U38DT but after reading reviews, seems like that cpu is nothing close to this  Else I would have gotten that because its build quality is much better    Also I see brightstar offers 3 years warranty with just RM10 extra, anyone knows about this? Is it legit? Its too cheap that I am kinda suspicious

Told her, she dont want haha. Because last time also I pass my old HP laptop to her, now she wants a "NEW" laptop. She say dont want 2nd hand stuff anymore liao 

reading from the posts above I understand that the vostro 5470 does not support SSD. As a vostro 5460 owner, I was planning on upgrading to a Samsung EVO 840 SSD. Could you guys tell me if the vostro 5460 supports SSD?
