I'm thinking of getting the 5470, been reading through this thread and notice quite a few issues which makes me a little hesitant to make the purchase.

I've been trying to compare this with others like HP 14-N060TX, Asus K451LB, Acer V5-473PG, each has their own pros & cons.

What do you guys think, should I just get the Vostro and hope I don't run into issues like bad WiFi, heat, lcd problems etc?

Anyone bought their vostro from Dell website? How long is their delivery. Can't seem to find anyone have the i5 touch screen on retail.

Can this be used as the ssd for the Vostro 5470?
It says NOT compatible with Mini PCIe slot for WWAN/wireless cards.
Will it work on our Vostro if I purchased it?

Hi,

Anyone able to use fingerprint reader on Dell Vostro 5470? What application did the reader use? Digital Persona?

I've clean install Window 7 Pro 64 inside this ultrabook and install every drivers provided from Dell website (including Biometric Validity Sensor), but I still can't use the reader. It seems there's another software needed to enable the fingerprint reader to work with Windows.

Im using wins 8.1, the fingerprint function is right under the "pc settings/account/sign-in options" in the metro interface. wins 7 no idea

Just to sharing that I already called Dell ProSupport regarding my issues with my Vostro 5470.
I bought the laptop last Saturday, and encountered multiple issues such as WiFi connection unstable, LCD dimmed when opening darken image, and power button that hard to pressed.

First call made at Monday evening, explains in details all diagnosis that I've done, and the tech reps (the girl one) asked for a few diagnoses that I missed-up. I made a second call at the night, 10pm, to report the result. The tech rep tells me that he will bring the cases tomorrow morning for further steps (for hardware preparation, technician appointment etc).
Next day, I called back, and since my cases registered at Tuesday, they can only assigned the on-site engineer at the next day, which is Wednesday. In the afternoon they called me back to confirm the appointment and get the details.

And on Wednesday (which is yesterday), I receive a call from the technician for confirmation on today's appointment, and although there's some issue at my ends, he comes at my home in time (actually one hour earlier than planned). Replicates all issues successfully with my assistance, and he replace all things that related (LCD screen, LCD cable, palm rest fullset including keyboard and buttons, WiFi etc). A very good person in my opinion and very details in getting the job done. I even helps him a few things, such as renew the paste, and exchanges some knowledge especially repairing this model, Vostro 5470. (I'm a software engineer myself, so there's a few things I teach him also  laugh.gif )

During that time, every parts of the laptop including LCD bezel and motherboard already opened up. Trust me, this laptop parts mechanism was very-very simple, compare to various laptop I knew before. Maybe because of the nature of ultrabook.

And the best thing is, although my laptop is already new, but most of the parts are already replaced with the new one that specifically QC'ed (quality checked), parts by parts. biggrin.gif For WiFi cases, I requested for Realtek brand, but it can't be done because of no stock available for short time (I can't wait till today as I want to return to hometown. I actually at the countryside as I type). I still got the same Intel 7260 one, but very difference in performance compare to previous one. I assume not all Intel wifi card are defect. But I will do another multiple round of test to make sure of this.

Overall, the service from Dell, just like everyone else said, was very good. Maybe because I got lucky to get the friendly one, but overall my encounter with multiple Dell staffs was positive.  thumbup.gif

I also have problem with my screen (cable), when i touch the bezel beside the dell logo the screen will blackout. Btw, how they manage to fix the autodim with darken image issue?

I see, thanks. Maybe Win 8.1 have their own fingerprint program integrated with Windows that can get the benefit of the reader.

Well that's how most Dell technician fix things: replace everything related. laugh.gif

For my LCD case, he replace both LCD screen and LCD cable (but not LCD cover, just the screen) and it fix, obviously. I assume for your case maybe the cable is the culprit. It might defect, or not plugged into LCD screen correctly. Better you call Dell, and most probably he tries to tighten the cable plug, and if failed, replace cable (and maybe screen also), just like me. biggrin.gif

Just that, it is not pre-install with Microsoft office...
That's the lack of it... The fan produces quite loud sound when u were working on some quite heavy task...

I buy from moniko (lelong seller)
I also suggest that anyone who want to buy this laptop model to buy from moniko (lelong seller) or pcmonster

The wifi range of this laptop is even worse than my smart phone sgs2. Is this faulty ? so far no disconnection issues , drivers updated to latest. The wifi adaptor is intel 7260.

Basically from what I gathered in reading thru this thread, the main drawbacks of the vostro 5470 are

- Poor wifi (can be solved by getting Dell to replace the network card?)
- Can't replace hdd with ssd

Are there any others which I might have missed?

If i were u i would picked the less problematic one. nod.gif to me i wud prefer the acer over this dell, i like dell, but not the this 5470 vostro series. The plus side for me is just that its lightweight. But thats about it. nod.gif

Gonna pick up my Dell 5470 this afternoon. For me the problems can be solved but I can't shave off the weight with other brands. Weight, screen size & price is my criteria. Other brands for i5 4200u & 1.5kg is gonna cost 3500-5500k without GPU summore in some models.
