QUOTE(skysoblue93 @ Nov 14 2013, 03:36 PM) Any of you guys mate a 5470 with ssd yet? i bought 5470 (rm2149) laptop.. then bought myself Crucial m500 ssd, but the ssd wont work. I called up dell, they say 5470 got 2 kind.. 1 is 5470 notebook, and 1 is 5470 ultrabook.. somehow the rm2149 is notebook, thus does not support SSD. its kinda stupid excuse, but heck. anyone manage to get it anything work? or should i just get mSata? QUOTE(skysoblue93 @ Nov 15 2013, 02:20 PM) 'dell' technician said, the one in ultrabook series. probably gonna have stickers.. IMO, dell is just giving lame excuse.. my 7 years old pc can use SSD with no problem lol, why newer dell cant support. At first, they even try to convince me how SSD port is different than sata. lol QUOTE(nexus2238 @ Nov 15 2013, 04:04 PM) does not make sense. You mean a full SATA Crucial M500 SSD? And you swap out the HDD with the SSD? Should work without any problem. btw, did you clone the HDD content over? Is the UEFI set to ACHI? QUOTE(skysoblue93 @ Nov 15 2013, 07:30 PM) The bios will hang, thus no further testing. Bios simply wont get past through if m500 SSD is plugged in. QUOTE(nexus2238 @ Nov 15 2013, 09:48 PM) what do you mean BIOS won't pass through? There is no such thing when you press the power up button, quickly press F2 or F8 or F12, it will lead you straight into UEFI (BIOS). QUOTE(skysoblue93 @ Nov 18 2013, 09:17 AM) Spam any bios button, it wont go into bios setting. The laptop will stuck at black screen with dell logo Sorry for quoting an old topic but this is something that needs to be addressed.I'm planning to get one, the RM2149 configuration. Had to really control myself because was so tempted to get a MSI GE-40 at RM3.5k or a RM3k-RM4k laptop with SSD BUT if this laptop cannot accept SSDs, I would have to look elsewhere already which is a bummer Tried googling about this issue but to no avail. Guess I'll have to send Dell an email |

Guess I'll have to send Dell an email hard to diagnose what is the cause without access to his / her machine Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm) + (1366x768;touch)@RM2149, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell Do you mean this spec? This one already has a mSATA SSD in standard spec, should not have any problem to take in a full SSD (or you can swap a bigger mSATA SSD in and wade into UEFI to turn it from caching to storage). |

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Dec 3 2013, 11:13 PM) don't know if TS was able to resolve the issue I'm not sure how experience he / she is with laptop, whether he / she went into UEFI to change it to Boot from USB 1st (since he / she seems not to clone the HDD) and use USB boot disc in order to install OS (that should be done before he / she swapped out the HDD) ... anyway, afaik, no laptop models have UEFI that "lock out" SSD (it's just normal SATA connection as far as UEFI / BIOS is concerned). One of the comments mentioned: "it doesnt support boot from ssd, u need to boot on hdd which then divert to ssd" What do you think he meant by that? Divert to SSD? Anyways, I believe the video shows the same problem skysoblue93 has had. Hopefully he has resolved it and can provide a detailed explanation on the process |

Hopefully he has resolved it and can provide a detailed explanation on the process the issue could be slightly different. in that video (it's not very clear), that guy was able to get into BIOS (but I'm not sure whether it was before or after the SSD swap in), but TS claimed he / she could not get into BIOS at all one hypothesis I had was the boot process was faster than TS was used to previously with HDD, and he / she did not press F2 quick enough, and boot hit the SSD, which was blank without OS, and stuck there |

QUOTE(nexus2238 @ Dec 4 2013, 10:46 AM) don't understand the comment So this is Dell Malaysia's reply:the issue could be slightly different. in that video (it's not very clear), that guy was able to get into BIOS (but I'm not sure whether it was before or after the SSD swap in), but TS claimed he / she could not get into BIOS at all one hypothesis I had was the boot process was faster than TS was used to previously with HDD, and he / she did not press F2 quick enough, and boot hit the SSD, which was blank without OS, and stuck there QUOTE please allow us to clarify on your queries. For your information, our Vostro 5470 has come out with 2 version, normal laptop and ultrabook. 1. Normal laptop. * It has come with normal HDD, mSATA SSD but it is not support SSD as the primary hard disk 2. Ultrabook * It has only come with SSD but this Ultrabook is not available in Malaysia at the moment. Hope this clarifies. Can't understand why it cannot support SSD? Not the standard SATA connection ah? Some sort of special magic connection |

Latest reply when I asked this:
Question: QUOTE May I know the reason why it does not support SSD? It's just a standard 2.5" SSD which would fit that HDD slot. If possible, I hope the technical team can come up with a reasonable solution to this as this is a turn off for me and a lot of people. Almost every other laptop in the market can easily install an SSD without any hiccups so I'm not sure why this is the case for the Vostro 5470. Answer: QUOTE Hi Kevin, we understand your eagerness for upgrading the SSD, however, due to the motherboard compatibility issue, it is unable to support SSD. We have a customer upgrade this model from HDD to SSD, but end up his laptop unable to boot up. Well, that's just so SAD |

QUOTE(AskarPerang @ Dec 5 2013, 07:35 PM) yeah, dell already add in additional options for vostro 5470 which come with mSATA. nice option there for those who lazy to upgrade by themselves. QUOTE(Khalid21 @ Dec 6 2013, 07:33 PM) Thanks!Khalid21 What's the name of that specific mSATA sized? I can't remember but I recall something like a M2 sata which is a new type [at the time where I remembered, it was a new type of mSATA to be used in the Lenovo Y510p and not any other type of older mSATA] Many thanks! |

(as said by dell, my one is not build to take ssd) secondly, the problem not on my part. no such thing as not fast enough to press f2 and what not. the laptop just hangs and no further option. (takes 10 minutes to display bios setting, and still says no primary hdd connected). Dell said to me, there are chances where ssd will be able to boot. u need to test which ssd is able and crucial m500 is not the one. |

Dell said to me, there are chances where ssd will be able to boot. u need to test which ssd is able and crucial m500 is not the one. So before you take out the HDD, did you change the boot sequence in the BIOS, from HDD 1st to USB drive 1st? If you do, then you can boot using an USB drive. Try that. (do you know how to make a USB boot disc?) Now, swap the SSD with the HDD. Make sure the mode is AHCI and not IDE. Now boot the laptop using the USB boot disc. Install OS on the SSD. |
