For those who have/had been experiencing the life in local University in Malaysia, mind to share the experiences with us? Maybe about some significant incidents.... or lecturers, etc..

I would also like to know... the first year we get admitted into the U, must we stay in the hostel there? And if we're going to stay there... is there internet connection available in every room? Can we buy desktop computer or laptop and bring there?

Are you referring to private or public U? For private U, it's up to you whether you want to stay at hostel or not. For public U, I don't know tongue.gif Internet connection, this varies from every U. Desktop or laptop it's up to you. Don't you think your topic is a little vague?

I'm not in local U but I have a lot of friends there.

In USM KKJ, there is LAN in the hostel.
Internet available from 4pm to 9am(is it 4pm or 5pm, forgotten).

Fren in UMS, living in Kolej Indah Permai(one of the hostel area) said wifi available at the cafe.

Fren in UUM told me, u need to wear formal wear to attend lecture everyday.
Its like dressing like an executive but boarding on bus to "work" tongue.gif

And about internet connection beside USM KKJ, u really have to pray where the hostel u being arranged to have wifi coverage. If not u would need bring ur laptop walk don't know how far in order to get wifi signal.

Fren in UTM told me. U cannot live outside hostel coz there are too many hostel vacancies left over. hunt17 should be able to confirm this.

But second year onwards we will have to live outside the campus I heard... Anyway I just hope to have internet connection most of the time... And my plan is to have a desktop...not a laptop... although laptop is more mobile... but I don't like it very much because it's fragile, expensive, and "user friendly" .. for me la... But I will have to face problem getting the wifi if I'm going for desktop but not laptop...

I heard some friends telling me there are some incidents like laptop, handphone, cameras being stolen frequently in local U... and that almost everyone will experience loses of their belongings because of stolen...wondering how would it be if i lose my things... sad.gif

you can still apply to stay in hostel for second year, just you need to be active in hostel activities..

yup agree, destop is much more powerful than laptop, but lack in mobility...

you can rent a house with friend or course mate, com mate outside and install streamyx...

well, stealing case is normal, so becareful. so as r*pe case in campus... for GIRLS, try not to get out at night, try to with friends, avoid alone, dont alwasy really believe to those guard as well.

by the way, what you're going to major??? what is your choice? which U? STPM or matrix? score?

I'm STPM leaver... first choice that I applied was Civil Engineering in USM... My CGPA is quite low..which is 3.42... actually being pulled down by my chemistry's grade .... If I obtain my first choice, undoubtedly I would be very satisfied and happy... But I don't know how does the selection work... So just can pray atm...

USM engineering campus 3rd year student here

we have to stay in hostel in our first year
you can move out though but you still need to pay the rent(much cheaper than ouside rent of course)

yes, they provide internet/LAN access for every room
the connection is slow, but still better than none and it's totally free tongue.gif

of course you can bring your computer to campus
beware of sucky security system though
your laptop will be stolen easily if you didn't keep your eyes on it(dunno about other campus, but it happens here)

it is Seberang Perai SELATAN... near to perak..

the buli culture is gone a decade ago... i think in my time, we were the unlucky SOB who they said were the last generation of this sick culture....

btw, graduated from USMKCP (the legend...) they used to called it LONCO = ragging...

it's tradition for the USMKCP newbie to be lonco by their senior during the first week of the 2-week orientation... but during my time, it's was however controlled a bit ... not the worst one as u may hear in the UPM ceiling fan case smile.gif .
during my time, seniors are not allowed to have body contact with the junior...they may ask u to do stupid things ie, climb the lighting pole, bark like a door at 2 am, sniff ur roomate underware (iyaksssssss..) etc..etc la.. but never they will touch US.... this is monitored by the warden and his spies.... but in my case there are a few junior who kena tampar with the senior coz of their rudeness ... to me this is an unforgetable memories and after the 2 week of torment, u can sit beside ur senior and they will knew ur name.....
only in my senior, this culture is ceast to exist......... i dont have the change to 'revenge' and we senior didnt knew the junior and they also dont know us....that';s kinda bad situation as we're living in small campuss where u can see each same faces everyday and night!!!

is good to have this in my head...the sweet memories of KCP............

for those of u that plan to take eng in USM , yes the place is deserted in rural area....

this is indeed a good enviroment for u student....
u dont have the chance to play around, went out to disco etc..etc...
so u may do ur responsibility - studies...
back in my time, the campuss is in perak...so far away from civilasation...and being city boy, the first few month like a seksaaan in hell.... worst if u dont own a transportation..have to reply on the stupid old bus which travel like kura2 ..and took 1 1/2 hr to get into town....

well, the area is well developed now...got highway..15 mins to town...

looking of this, i can say thanks to the situation..i dont know what will happen to me if the campuss is so near to town like the USM main campuss...most of my friend end up in hell!!

Lets say in USM engineering campus... it's said that it's far from town... that means if in second year we can't live in hostel anymore.... will we face difficulties finding accomodations outside the campus?

i'm just gonna add on the UTM (skudai):

yeah, it's true that all students (regardless of junior or senior) will have to stay in campus. there are upside and downside to this. but simply put, u have a wide choice of rooms to choose from.

all the new colleges and new blocks in old colleges have free internet connection now. but they've setup a system where u wont be able to use torrent, kazaa or any p2p softwares from inside.

there are several types of rooms. the favourite would be the single room with bathroom attached + balcony. quite cheap, about RM 180 - 200 per month inclusive of everything. there are also rooms with a common kitchen (mostly for post-grads or family).

life is pretty much controlled. as usually, boys arent allowed inside girls' blocks, but they're pretty much free to roam about outside. no booze/liquor, and generally there are no curfew inside the university (except for some of the girl's college, where they will lock the gates, but u can still walk in, only cars would have to stay outside).

for KL campus, well, currently it's pretty crappy lah. cant say much. but last year i was involved in a new design proposal for UTM KL, and basically it's a whole makeover of the whole campus. i cant reveal too much of the details, but we scrapped the earlier traditional look for a more radical approach in design. not sure what's going on right now, coz i'm off the project to study.

let's talk about campus design in general. information here are based on my personal observations. might differ on occassions.

UM kuala lumpur

not much on planned design, but basically the centre of UM is the lake, where most of its main buildings are located around it. it expands over hills around the lake valley, where most of the faculties are located. college/hostels are located sporadically, most are located near faculties.

vehicular access is quite good, although at peak hours i feel there are too much traffic inside UM. parking can be a hassle.

UPM serdang

a university designed over a HUGE land. i've been to some universities in europe which couldnt even compare with the sheer size of UPM. but basically most are farm/plantations. buildings are sporadic, although the main buildings are all located in the centre. colleges/hostels are located in specific areas, but mostly have good distance to its respective faculties.

u'll need to have a car or atleast a bike to live in UPM. i wouldnt even recommend bicycles. but i think they have good public/university transport. good vehicular access. parking are negotiable.

UiTM shah alam

designed to complement shah alam city, which actually well integrated into the urban fabric. main buildings are located on top of the hill, which most already know is one of the landmarks of shah alam (the menara). faculties and buildings are located within good distance with each other, but being on a hill with varied topography can make the difference between near and far. colleges/hostels are located close to faculties, and sometimes can be seen in pairs.

acceptable vehicular access, but the centre tends to get too crowded during peak hours. parking IS a hassle, depending on where u are. motorcycles are highly recommended.

USM penang

quite a small campus compared to the others, mainly due to limited land area. u can walk the longest stretch of USM in less than 30 minutes. main buildings are concentrated in the centre stretch of the campus, with faculties and other buildings complementing each other. colleges/hostels are located within short distance, but my believe is that students stay mostly off-campus due to limited space.

vehicular access is quite limited, but the flow is good. parking can be a hassle, but i've never been in USM long enough to observe peak hours. so i wouldnt know. again, motorcycles are recommended (by suggestions from friends).

UTM KL campus

i believe this is the SMALLEST public university campus in malaysia. u can walk the longest stretch in 15 minutes. main buildings are located in the centre, and other buildings (which are quite old) located very close to each other. most are already connected by expansions and additional buildings. hostels are located near the centre, but have very limited space.

dont bother about vehicles. u WONT get a parking there, even on sundays. believe me, i know. just get somebody to drop u off at the frontgate everyday. or get a bus or cab.

UTM JB

planned using sekolah pondok concept, with the mosque in the centre on top of a hill. faculties and main buildings are located around it, and hostels/colleges are located outside the faculty ring. although it's acceptably walkable from one faculty to another, walking from ur hostel to ur faculty might take more than 30 minutes. usually more.

vehicular access are good, although parking in the central area might be limited during peak hours. there are central parking zones near central zone, and usually students walk from there on to their respective faculties.

LUCT cyberjaya

one of the fanciest looking university in malaysia. it's actually consist of several buildings, which are efficiently well connected with each other. u'd get a feel of shopping complex typology around the building. hostels are only for foreign students, so local students had to find outside accommodation.

vehicular access is very good. parking is also quite good, although u might have to pay if u wanna park closer to the building. owh, if u wanna drive, better drive a big car. small cars, dont bother lah tongue.gif. i parked my car so far away, malu ho!

note: i've never been to:
    a. UTP, which from what i gather, is the best looking university in msia. won many awards too, architecturally, atleast.
    b. UIA gombak, the new campus have been said to have impressive planning and design layout with a lot of consideration of the Islamic factors.
    c. UUM, where the design was submitted to several international competitions, and got special mentions. not sure if they won any awards though.
