KUALA LUMPUR: It is up to the individual private sector companies to decide whether they will give their workers a RM150 cost of living allowance (Cola) to cushion the effects of the recent fuel price increase.
MTUC president Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud said letters had been sent to all affiliates advising them to discuss the payment of Cola with their respective managements.
"Our affiliate union leaders have been asked to write individually to their employers justifying the payment of Cola," he said yesterday.

"We met the MEF (Malaysian Employers Federation) last week and it has been agreed that unions resolve the matter individually with their own companies."
Last month, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn met with the MEF and MTUC on the Cola issue.
After the meeting, he said a conciliation task force comprising representatives from the MEF, MTUC and relevant ministries had been set up to receive and evaluate all proposals on how to soften the fuel price rise.
He added that Malaysians would have to adjust to face the reality of the price increase.
MEF president Md Jafar Abdul Carrim said the federation could not instruct its members to pay Cola to their workers.
"Every company has its own criteria for the payment of allowances like Cola," he said.
However, he acknowledged that employees were suffering because of the higher fuel prices.
While fuel prices had increased six times since 2004, Syed Shahir said workers' salaries had not gone up correspondingly.
