QUOTE Xbox 360 getting new CPU Chartered Semiconductor announces new deal to make smaller 65mm-process chip for Microsoft's next-gen console. By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot Posted Apr 21, 2006 11:50 am PT
One of the most common consumer complaints about the next-gen console is that its graphics capability requires a central processing unit which needs to be cooled by a constantly running, less-than-stealthy ventilation system. In other words, its fan is loud.
Some disgruntled consumers have even compared the 360's fan to a Blackhawk helicopter. Those same consumers will welcome today's news that the Xbox 360 is getting a new CPU which runs at lower temperature. Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced it will begin making the Xbox 360's CPU using a using 65-nanometer (nm) Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) semiconductor technology. Currently, the Singapore-based hardware manufacturer company makes 90nm Xbox 360 CPUs under an agreement with IBM, designer of the CPU. The first Xbox 360s with the new CPU will go on sale in 2007.
For laymen, the change means that the new 65mm Xbox 360 CPUs will have more chips per wafer--which means lower energy requirements, lower heat output, and cheaper chip production costs. That is music to Microsoft's ears. "We look forward to working with Chartered on the production of such an important component of our Xbox 360 system," said Larry Yang, General Manager of Xbox Console Development at Microsoft. for more info(comments basically) check out Xbox 360 new size CPU some consumers complaining they bought a blackhawk 360.....their CPU is THAT loud apparently its smaller, and less noisy but what about all the early 360 owners?? xbox 360.1 Remember this is next year (2007), not exactly around the corner. This is no different than the many different iterations of the PS2 that came out.

QUOTE Mr.LKM Posted Today, 05:24 PM Should I wait for it? unsure.gif lol...good question...im plannin on joining u in the june bulk guess if u dont mind the noise then sure..why not...after all there is no increase in performance other than a noise reduction

I think most of us knew that this was gonna happen. Everytime anything new gets released, a better version will usually come out around a year later. Take the recent DS lite for instance. And i hear PSP2's coming out as well. Personally, i dont notice the noise much, but yeah, the unit does heat up after a while. At first, i was planning to hold off buying a 360 until after E3 and see what all 3 companies are offering us gamers. But after watching the videos for GRAW, Fight Night Round 3 and Oblivion online, i knew i just couldnt wait that long. So if anyone has the willpower to wait that long to buy an XBOX 540 (my own nickname for it..hehe), u'd be doing the smart thing financially since you got something better cheaper. But can you really look at the videos of fight night round 3 and wait for over a year to play it ? ... I couldnt

That is it. You have to look at this in terms of revisions, much like with the original Xbox, it is on its sixth revision at the moment (v1.6), the PS2 is on its 12th or 13th revision and Gamecube is on it's 4th. All it means is that they have changed components, board layouts etc. to cut down on manufacturing costs only, they have not made any changes in speed etc.

Since we are using it in our home, I guess it won't be very annoying unless you are playing in the room which you are sharing with your room mate. I myself really prefer the silent condition. I don't like noise. I think I should go to test the 360 myself.

yup it's very normal for console manufacturers to make new revisions to their hardware. normally they don't mention it though so only the informed public knows

hmmm i havent buy yet the 360 but then i dont care if it noise or wat so ever if ur runin ur system on 5.1 system surely anybody would not even notice the sound....but wat im wondering is performance wise wheater its goin to be much better or worse than the xbox 360 now...you know the history of playstation2 first model n the latest model after that...so for me the noise is nottin just hopefully the new 360 that came out 2007 at least they iron out some of the bug or upgrade the system coz i do really wanna buy a 360...especialy the heating part coz my old rusted xbox is 24/7 all year on...so i hope a 360 that is an extreme media center could also be on 24/7.....
