according to Marhalim, airforce right now in the process of preparing FRP for MRCA....
and leasing is one of the option... SHAH ALAM: RMAF chief Jen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud confirmed today that the RFP for the MRCA programme will be out soon. He told Malaysian Defence that the air force was in the midst of preparing the requirements for the MRCA before presenting it to the government to issue out the RFP. He was accompanying Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for a visit to the Subang air base. Among the aircraft on static display was a Eurocopter EC-725 (tail number 04), a F/A-18D Hornet (07), a King Air, a Hercules C130, CN235 and a Sukhoi Su-30MKM.The Cougar 04 together with tail number 3 (not displayed) were recently ferried from France and was undergoing final tests before delivery to the RMAF. Rodzali didnt say when the RFP is expected to be issued as the matter rightfully belonged to the government. He however indicated that leasing was an option that the government might have to decide on for the programme due to affordability issues. That said, he indicated that it does not mean the Gripen was a shoe-in for the programme but it was clear with the leasing gambit, the Swedish single engine jet had catapulted itself to the forefront of the competition. However as I mentioned before if the RFP- some sources says it will be issued after the Umno elections in October – document call for leasing as an option it is more than likely that the Eurofighter consortium will offer a similar deal for the Typhoon. I am not sure whether the Typhoon package will be cheaper than the Gripen but it will be interesting to see that play out within the next few months. In an email interview for Asian Defence Journal, Rodzali stated that four contenders remained in the MRCA race namely (in no particular order) Typhoon, Gripen, Rafale and Super Hornet. He stated that the Su-30MKM is out of the competition although he did not mentioned the reason. As Rodzali also said that they had no plans to upgrade or extend the service of the MiG-29 it therefore expected that the Russian jets will be retired by 2015. Upgrades (limited to updates to the navigation system to comply with new air traffic management) to the Hercules was ongoing though there was no plans to do so for the Hawk. As for the AEW, Rodzali said today that the matter was still under consideration though he indicated that the air force would prefer a jet solution instead of a turbo-prop. –Malaysian Defence |
