'No plans to replace MiG-29, Sukhoi jets with newer models'
By Ben Tan | 8 September 2013 Sunday
KLUANG: There are no plans for the government to replace the country's current fleet of MiG-29 and Sukhoi fighter jets with newer models soon.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said any replacement and purchase for new fighter jets has to be looked at in the context of the country's present security and threats.

"For the time being, the government does not have plans to replace the current MiG-29 and Sukhoi fighter jets yet.

“We are looking more at the possibility of equipping the present fleet of Agusta with weapons or upgrading the Nuri helicopters,” he said after the Merdeka Raya 2013 celebrations at the Sembrog parliamentary constituency here today.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin who is also the acting Transport Minister, reminded bus and transport companies to not increase their fares indiscriminately as to burden the people.

He said any fare increase cannot be implemented yet until a comprehensive study has been carried out by the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD).

Hishammuddin said his ministry will assist by amending transport policies to avoid burdening the people following the increase in the fuel prices.

"SPAD and the Transport Ministry officials are still in discussions with bus companies to look into the issue of how to the fuel subsidies can be channeled to them to avoid a fare hike,” he said.

MNLF mobilizes Tausug fighters in Malaysia

MANILA, Philippines - The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has activated some 4,000 foreign trained Tausug fighters embedded in Sarawak and Sabah in Malaysia, group spokesman Emmanuel Fontanilla said yesterday.
Fontanilla said the mobilization of the fighters was aimed to protect Tausugs, who he claimed have been the subject of a crackdown by Malaysian authorities.

He said the MNLF fighters were in addition to the Sulu Sultanate Army led by Agbimuddin Kiram, the brother of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, leading the armed struggle to reclaim their ancestral land in Sabah.
MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari had declared Sarawak and Sabah as part of the Bangsa Moro Republik (BMR).

Fontanilla however clarified the MNLF fighters in Malaysia will act only in self-defense against any attack from Malaysian forces.
Fontanilla declined to elaborate how the armed group, called the Bangsa Moro Army in Malaysia, was “activated,” but a source revealed at least five countries are supporting it with arms shipments that had arrived in the disputed territory.

“Just like what happened in the early ‘70s at the height of Mindanao conflict, Sabah and Sarawak will be the main base of the Bangsa Moro Army,” the source said.
The source said the MNLF in the early ‘70s had set up guerrilla and training camps in Sabah with the consent of the Malaysian government at the time.

The source added huge arms shipments were also sent to MNLF in Mindanao weeks before Misuari declared independence in Talipao, Sulu last Aug. 12.
“MNLF troops are now bearing modern assault weapons coming from foreign supporters,” the source said.
Fontanilla however denied the arms shipment, saying the reports were part of government

Malaysian security forces on high alert following Zamboanga crisis
By Roy Goh | 9 September 2013 Monday | 03:05PM

KOTA KINABALU : Malaysian security forces are on full alert along its borders in the east coast of Sabah following trouble in southern Philippines.

Hundreds of armed men who claimed to be from the Moro National Liberation Front attacked several cities in Zamboanga this morning.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said operations are on full alert following the attack.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and at the same time we are coordinating our safety and security measures on our end," he said.

The MNLF led by former Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao governor Nur Misuari launched the offensive this morning.

Reports from the Philippine media claimed the armed men moved from the coastal villages in the Santa Barbara area in Zamboanga.

At least one policeman was killed, eight injured and 20 people were taken hostage in the city where schools and offices were ordered closed

i thought the AFP and MNLF did joint maneuvre to combat splinter group a while back?

problem with pinoy security forces is that there are so many turncoats among their ranks. be it the army, the police or their village guard

i wouldn't be laughing if i was you. if the philippines continues to be incompetent in containing the situation it gonna spill to us eventually.

thus the need to improve ESSCOM. the plan to replace the Migs will have to be on lower priority at least until 2015. right now we need MPAs and additional ground radar placement. oh and half a dozen new, heavily armed cutters for MMEA wouldn't hurt.

Enemy Inside the Wire: The Untold Story of the Battle of Bastion
By Matthieu Aikins | Illustrations by Matthew Woodson | September 2013

One year ago this month, under cover of night, fifteen Taliban, dressed as American soldiers, snuck onto one of the largest air bases in Afghanistan. What followed was a bloody confrontation highlighting a startling security lapse, with hundreds of millions in matériel lost in a matter of hours—the worst day for American airpower since the Tet Offensive. Yet the attack faded from view before anyone could figure out what went wrong. For the first time, Matthieu Aikins relives those heart-pounding moments and offers an extraordinary account of the Battle of Bastion

Don't laugh at other people. What goes around comes around, true for Malaysia as well. Check and see who trained those MNLF fighters last time.

More assets for Esscom

KUALA LUMPUR: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) will be strengthened for the safety of Malaysians, especially in Sabah, Datuk Seri Najib Razak posted on his Twitter account yesterday.

The prime minister was commenting on a news report which stated that Esscom would be receiving new assets soon.

On Thursday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said some of the new assets, particularly those needed for patrols, had already been purchased and were pending delivery.

Meanwhile, in an earlier tweet, Najib reminded the public that this Sunday was the closing date for anyone to contribute ideas for the 2014 Budget.

The Budget is scheduled to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 25.

Looks like the situation in Zamboanga will escalate into a full-scale war, if this news from Mindanao sources is true.

Latest reports from Zamboanga are that Commander Khabir Malik is leading the raid to re-liberate the city and that more than 1,000 Mujahidīn have landed and more are arriving.

The MNLF Mujahidīn entered into the city at around 3am this morning via the Muslim majority port areas of Rio Hondo and Mariki, from there they have marched through to Sta. Barbara, Lustre, Sta. Catalina, Talon-Talon, Kasanyangan, Mampang and surrounding areas. The city is at a stand still and the mayor of Zamboanga Maria Isabel Climaco has placed the city on shut down, ordering all stores and schools to be closed.

The Mujahidīn have stated that they aim to march upon city hall to raise the flag of Moro independence, this seems to suggest that this attack is not merely a ghazwah (raid) but is an attempt to re-liberate the city of Zamboanga and to return it to Muslim hands after centuries of Christian rule.

maybe the acquisition of a AEW platform can improve surveilance capability.
