I'm using AK100, amazing portable + stylish as an audiophile music player.
Currently using this for IEM only.

I was kinda concerned about the high Z which could affect IEM.

Your IEM sounds ok? Especially the bass n treble?

Just curious hmm.gif

My latest hoot.
AK120 is just blardy expensive while FiiO X3 looks like a brick.
The iP5 headphone out is more powerful than this small bugger, so pair it with this neutral sounding amp.

Hope i do have time for that =D, be frank, the reason why i'm using with IEM, as this player output level is not high enough for high impedance headphone, heard they improved it at AK120.
Nevertheless, it is a great portable music player, it is refined enough in a small size.

Sweee bro! rclxms.gif
Just asking. Why don't you buy them in SG when you fly here for business, and claim the GST rebate when you leave Changi?

Tried the Titan during last Dec Mooks Festival.
I can't hear any difference to the normal AK120, except the increase in storage, so give it a miss.

I'm going ga-ga over the Calyx M though....
Hopefully the SQ is well implemented, as on paper, they almost thick all the right boxes

Size-wise, the RSA SR-71B is almost the same dimension as AK120.
So if you stack it, still looks quite nice. The Intruder is a bit longish though.
The Vorzuge on the other hand is a bit short, but almost the same width.

If size is not priority, Centrance M8 is a good choice

The Titan itself is a DAP while the AK10 is a DAC/amp for mobile phones or comp. The AK10 only takes USB in while the Titan only give analog or optical out. Both can't work together sweat.gif

Yeah, M8 is goo if not the size. I like that they use the 4 pin XLR.

Whoa. Which one? S or B?

If B can make use of the balance input of the ALO Mk3-B. Fully balanced input to output.

Or you can consider my AK100MK2 smile.gif

Big difference between the normal AK100 with AK120 is the output impedance making AK100 less user friendly with IEMs. Besides that storage space is slightly bigger on AK120 and better soundstage and airier.

AK100MK2 has the same output impedance as 120 and is tuned similarly with 120 as well. Sound quality is similar to 120 with the 120 soundstage more noticeable when hooked up to speakers.

DX50 is really good for the price, best if you can test them all before deciding.
You can consider X5 as well when it's out here.

The AK100mk2 by itself does not offer enough juice for the Pandora to really sing.

not a matter of the output resistance, it is about the amplification nod.gif

even with the AK120 you will still need to pair with an amp for the Pandora to sing sweat.gif

What you need is an amp on top of the DAP. But it depends on your preference, i'm sure it's sufficient to drive the Pandora well alone, but driving it to its full potential is another story.

you are missing the point here. for your Pandora, the consideration has nothing to do with the output resistance of either 3 or 20 ohms. it has to do with the power output sweat.gif

Hi, a new AK100 User reporting in. Was enjoying it together with my E12DiY amp. It sounds decent with the muses01. However, when using the AK100 alone pairing with my low independence JH5, felt that it sounds kind weird and lacking of low mid until low part, like so hollow. Is it something to do with the 22ohm independence of it? Should I go for RWAK100? Was considering about it and dunno whether it will bring a big difference or not. How long would it take for the mod?

You got the older AK100 and not the Mk2 version that comes with 3 ohm output impedance (same with AK120)?

How much did you get it for? If you got it cheap than I guess ok. There's relatively not so much price difference between the Mk1 and Mk2.

Actually price difference btw Mk1 and Mk2 is quite big. Usually Mk2 retails around USD799 without the shipping and tax cost. You can get it cheaper if going direct from Japan around 650USD before tax.
Mk1 you can get it around RM1.4k ish if direct from Japan before shipping and tax.

Officially, AK100 is USD 699 while AK100 Mk2 is USD 799.

In audio world, both are relatively small difference in price.

I doubt he was asking on the official price. Audio world is separated into 2 segments, the headfi and home system. If you are making reference to home system then yes. Difference is negligible.

Are you using 64bit OS? The driver would not be installed when you connect it to a 64bit OS via USB 3.

With 64bit OS, you need USB 2.0 to make the USB DAC work. Apparently if you connect your USB 3 port to a USB 2 hub and connect the AK100 to the USB 2 hub, it would not work too.

Else, downgrade OS from 64bit to 32bit but that would mean maximum addressable memory on the laptop is limited to 4GB.

You mean if i downgrade to 32bit windows, i can only access maximum of 4gb songs from ak100? Wad do u meant addresable memory is limited to 4gb?
If pass thru usb hub also cannot~Should i mod one of my usb 3.0 into 2.0 den? That would solve most of the problem. Hopefully its possible.

Mod by desoldering the USB 3 to USB 2 on the motherboard? Is that possible? rclxub.gif

Dual boot would work. Although it sounds very cumbersome to boot into your 32bit OS for music, that would be the cheapest solution.

Honestly, between doing that and carrying around another DAC when I know that it will be used besides only my DAP's I would rather do that. Like on trips where I know that I will be stationary in the hotel room etc. But if you wanna go back to your computer cause not all your music can fit onto the AK100 and the SD card, you can do either that, or just keep copying the music that I wanna listen to onto the SD Card, I get transfer speeds of up to 60mbps anyway. But I wouldn't need to cause my RWAK120 can fit all my music with the 128x3.

Copying out files to SD card as and when required is crazy. 60Mbps will take you 4 hours 51 minutes for just 1 x 128GB card. sweat.gif

Fastest and easiest is to dual boot.

No. I mean if you wanna listen to an album or two just copy it out. Why would anyone have the sudden urge to listen to all 128GB of new music? 128GB of music will take forever to listen to anyway.

It's just a rebranded Final Audio IEM. Nothing special. At that price. Look elsewhere.

Here is a news to share, one of the Ak DIY-er who also received a nice review in head fi, the mod from Mezzo Soprano : http://www.mezzohifi.com/
Not as famous as Red Wine Audio but their mod is also recognized. The guy who is doing this mod is currently in KL and we can save the shipping cost and Paypal charges if we want to deal with him. He provides the dac change mod(not similar with RWA as they still preserve the volume button and there is a switch for the alternation of filter) and also bypassing the 22ohm impedance of Ak100.

Just a sharing. MSAk is also one of the mod on par with RWAk. And I find that the mod of WM8741 DAC mod is much more interesting than Red Wine Audio's. They didnt sacrifice the volume control of it and you still can use it as a portable DAP. Since Phanom is at Malaysia, he is offering a special price that is a bit more cheaper than the price stated at website. Too bad I am at Penang now, if not would like to try out his modded MSAk with WM8741 DAC mod.

Yea. When I saw that he implements the chips in software mode and not in hardware mode, I was like......... Haha. That's too cool.
How much did he charge you for the AK100 modding? And why is he down here and for how long do you know?

How did he preserve the volume control? Considering the original WM8740 DAC is configured in software mode, the only way to implement the WM8741 is to bypass the software mode to hardware mode.
Unless he has created his own custom firmware OS to work with the WM8741?
This was the problem faced by RWA, he did try to find Listrid to come up with one to support the WM8741 but no news since then..

Cant really give an answer to your questions. Maybe you should contact him personally. tongue.gif
Beside on the DAC mod while preserving the Volume control, he also able to add a digital filter on it. And also in the headfi forum also mentioned that a balance output can be added to your Ak100. Try search for MSAK100 in Headfi and you will have a few reviews on it. nod.gif

I ever tried MSAK100 and some prototype cables from MS before when Cravenz of head-fi was still active in Singapore as MS sometimes asked Cravenz to audition and get feedback from other head-fi members in SG.
I ever thought of getting MS to modify my AK100 through Cravenz, but before committing myself to the mod, Cravenz disappeared from head-fi and I bought AK120 biggrin.gif

IMO, after adding the digital filter for RWAK100, it would going to be an advantage over the Ak240 as you may be able to alter the frequency response of it. Sound wise, would need to have an A/B comparison for both units. A fully modded MSRWAK120 Titan vs Ak240 would be an epic review and the first ever in the field of audiophile. biggrin.gif

Yes. The RWAK mod was done at USD300. And now I just got quoted by Phanom at USD650 for the WM8741 mod with balanced output to be done.
Do you guys think it's worth it?

It sounds better than the stock 22Ohm OI AK100 biggrin.gif
The good thing about MSAK mod is, you can specify what type of cable for him to bypass the resistor for AK100.
I tried both the copper and silver cable bypass for MSAK100.
I preferred the silver cable bypass as I auditioned the MSAK100 with TG!334.
Others might prefer the copper cable bypass if they prefer warmer and weightier sound.

Included Case made from Minerva leather, originated from Badalassi Carlo was chosen for the case. Badalassi Carlo was made by Professor Carlo Badalassi, who is known for his excellent skills with leather. Unlike modern methods, he uses a traditional method of making leather that requires extensive time and devotion. His reputation is well-known among top expensive brands due to his focus on the leather quality over quantity.

The leather case for the AK240 was made from a process called “Full Vegetable Tanning”. This traditional method has been used in Italy for over 200 years. The process brings out the special characteristic of leather while creating a natural tanning look. A variety of trees and plants are involved in this tanning process which takes about 40 days to complete and only the most experienced professionals in Italy possess the skills to do it.

This special leather material has a lot of oil in it that will allow the leather to shine the more it is used. Many tests and trials have been done with the creation of the leather case in order to highlight the unique design of the AK240.

Not sure about MY, but in SG the AK120 is selling at S$1299. Previously the RRP was $1599
The 120 Titan should be S$300 more

It depends what are iem/headphone you'll be pairing it with.
I'm using the AK100II with ciem Roxanne while my wife sometimes use it with her ESW9Ltd.
The balanced headphone out is less powerful that the single-ended out and when I tried Tralucent Reference 1 iem, I prefers the sound from the single-ended out.

If you need to use the DAP with harder to drive headphone, maybe you can audition the AK120II.
For me, the price and form factor is enough for me to stop at AK100II and I have no intention to upgrade to 120II or 240 yet tongue.gif

Congrats ! rclxms.gif You must now be in audio nirvana (again). I assume you got it because the AK380 was the best DAP tested. How much better is the AK380 against the rest (just DAP alone without amps/DACs)? Does the higher price commensurate with the increase in audio fidelity? How is the stacking order from best to worst?

Just some guesswork here but I predict something like this...

AK380 > AK240 > ZX2 > X7 > AK120

Nah he bought the AK320. And judging by his choice, I'd say the difference between 320/380 isn't significant enough to justify getting the 380 over the 320. I could be wrong though.

More of like functional difference, docking amp 100% fit

I also cant sure, my opinion is still AK380>=AK320, native DSD playback may be an advantage hmm.gif

Price difference between these two are significant, 15k vs 9k rclxub.gif

The AK380 is to my ears, the best player in the world, and by a good margin as well. It is very very very good. But do I still think it is over priced? Yes. But it is definitely the leader of the pack and by a good margin too.

So... it kinda goes like this..

AK380 >>> ZX2 > AK240 >> X7 > AK120

I honestly had no intention of getting another player, even the AK380 although I found it to be one heck of a performer. This is cause I am satisfied with my 120 Titan-Mojo stack.

Bought the player as gifts as presents to others for Christmas.

And ClieOS and I both agree that the AK380 and the AK320 is very hard (read impossible) to tell apart when not playing DSD. And I do not own a single DSD file anyways.

Do you own an AK120? If you do it'll be much easier to explain. But I'll try my best here.
So basically when you load songs the player will scan your media so that it can sort the songs you have so that it can display the songs by artist, album, songs etc.
If you have more than 10,000 songs, the player will only be able to sort and categorise 10,000 songs.
However, if you have more than that, simply disable the library scanning. And you can access all your songs; say for example 12,000 songs in the folder view in the AK120 interface.
Does this make sense?
The song limitation on the AK120 to be able to be categorised is 10,000 by the way.

Not yet but searching information about it, first timer here so much to learn.

Okay, what you mean is by using the library UI it is unable to list more than 10k song but using directory folder you can access more than 10k song.

Is that what you mean?

Yes that is right. The library UI where it sorts the songs into artist/genre/sings can only be done up to 10,000 songs. But if you have more. Just disable library scanning and use the directory folder.

They won't. Haha. I doubt they'll be updating the Ayer any longer unless it's absolutely necessary.
But the generation after that tho, its all good. Not much of a song limitation. Then again, 10,000 songs is plenty much.

Yeah, it's an old device by any means. They won't do any major update I guess.

Probably not the right place to ask but does it enough to power LCD2/T1?

Nope for T1 either 1st gen or 2nd gen, bcs the output power is too weak, even though you can maximize your volume in your AK but the sound impression wont satisfy you sweat.gif

Unless you pair with desktop amplifier, than it should be fine. cool.gif

I used to drive my LCD2 with my AK120 Titan. But if you wanna use it with headphones, just connect it to an External amp (like what I used to do) or use a Mojo(what I am doing now)

If you're going to get the AK120. Forget everything else and get a Mojo. Beats everthing by two miles and is honestly a bargain for how much it's going for.
Try it out and you'll be blown away.

I tried IFI micro series before, in high gain mode, to me, the sound becomes harsh, it makes your listening experience not enjoyable.

Like Joshua say, instead of getting IFI series, better get Chord Mojo for impressive experience.

But still, I recommend you bring your AK120 and LCD2 to test around at E1 personal @ Sungei Wang or Jaben Subang Jaya.
