Melbourne Uni isn't the best in all disciplines. I admit it is well-known for Medicine and possibly Law, so if you're interested in pursuing these, then it's probably a good choice. Rankings, as mentioned by feynman are relative and they don't mean a lot (as good universities are highly-competitive among themselves and a difference between the nth and n+1th positions can be as close as 0.01%).

There is one thing about Melbourne though. It is a "sandstone" institution and some people love this. OT, but sometimes I wonder if UM is regarded as a "sandstone" institution too?
