before each ride?

1) enough air in tire, you don't want to ride a deflating tire out
2) brakes are working, you want to be able to stop once you get rolling
3) visual inspection that nothing else is out of place
4) the rest won't kill you mid-ride

you can send it back to the shops if you feel that something is not quite right... not necessarily on a schedule... just clean your bike once in a while and invest in some lubes and to perform the regular maintenance like cleaning and lubing the chain yourself... the rest other than cleaning the bike can be handled by the shops...
