QUOTE(n3rd3y3 @ Aug 20 2013, 12:32 AM)
minicard form factor is mSATA SSD right?

if I understand it correctly, 1 mSATA and 3 normal size SSD (1 converted ODD) = quad 1tb SSD they were promoting. thats why it's only 256gb each for raid 0 as the biggest msata is currently 256gb?
*
QUOTE(horns @ Aug 20 2013, 12:41 AM)
yeah i think so. half-size minicard is our wifi card. the configuration that you mentioned was what i have thought of. the largest of msata ssd should be mushkin's 480gb. it might become cost prohibitive if you put in 4x480gb (4x MYR1,500 is already 6k dy; assuming each is MYR 1,500).
*
So it won't fit 4 2.5" SSD's? shocking.gif rclxub.gif cry.gif icon_question.gif doh.gif

i am really not sure. from what i've learned, no :/
*
QUOTE(Prince J @ Aug 20 2013, 01:03 AM)
Alienware 17 has only 2 SATA connectors, one ODD and one msata SSD if I am not mistaken.
*
QUOTE(horns @ Aug 20 2013, 08:43 AM)
hey thanks a lot for clearing things up.
*
I guess it only fits 3 SSD's then. sad.gif will just use the 512 as C and the other two 969Gb's will be placed in RAID0. And there goes my dream of having a HDD inside. Will remove the present one now and put it in an external hard drive casing. Haha.

And thanks everyone for your contribution to this discussion.

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 20 2013, 09:33 AM)
that's one way. however i still think it's better to get an msata ssd to replace the stock one as OS drive, then put the hdd in the odd.

additionally, you can create a ramdisk with a fraction of your 32gb of ram (8 to 16gb) and points all temp folders to it. this helps in reducing reads/writes to your ssd's, while having a speed that is a few times faster than a raid0.
*
If i were to purchase a 480GB MSATA am a able to use this as my Cdrive? or is it better to buy a 256GB MSATA and use it as an OS drive? How big would an OS drive need to be? Not minimum but with ample of safety space.

I used the guide in the links he provided to perfectly reinstall everything...
maybe u would find it useful also...
biggrin.gif
*
Thanks I have done it and it works.
But I have problems as per below:

At start up they ask me which Windows i want to start and say that there is windows in Volume 2 and Windows in Volume 6 and they allow me to select. everything works fine just but that. Its not that it works fine but I didn't remember needing to select it in the past? have I installed two copies of Windows 8?

user posted image

And the the other thing is I am unable to install 2 drivers from the resource DVD. Namely, the
1) Intel Rapid Smart Technology driver
2) Intel Haswel HD graphics.

Any icon_question.gif guys?

Illegear Came over on Wednesday to upgrade the AW17 and modify it.

Below are the pictures of what and how it happened:

So basically I was upgrading my system from the GTX770m to the GTX780m. Removing the 750GB HDD that came with the AW to the Transcend 512GB SSD as the C-Drive and the secondary bay to house the Crucial 960GB SSD, and the BluRay drive to be removed and to house another Crucial 960GB SSD. Then the stock RAM's were also changed out and added with Crucial Ballistix Sport 1866MHz 1.35V RAMS.

Opening up the belly of the Alienware

You can see from this picture that everything has been removed. All the HDD's, batteries, and the BluRay drive.

Everything was then installed and they were pieced together and Windows was reinstalled into the new SSD

And that's done and now I am installing my other programs. My final rig is as per my signature below. And I love it. Thank God for everything! smile.gif

Alienware 17- Intel®Core™i7-4800MQ, GTX780M, Transcend 512GB SSD, Crucial 960GB SSD x2 Raid 0, Crucial Balistix Sport 1866MHz RAM, 750GB 7200RPM HDD with paid iRIVER and JPLAY

congratulations, joshuachew

a sweet rig there smile.gif

looks like 17 has morphed and it is easier to tear down than r4 to access those hidden stuff. the keyboard and palm rest is also one-piece.  nice!

Thanks! smile.gif Everyone here has been very helpful in making all this possible!

I am not sure about that but I do not remember anything about installing Dolby. Is there anyway I can install it?

QUOTE(raymondtong94 @ Aug 24 2013, 10:49 AM)

all upgrades are sucessfull.. thank god..
via cpu-z
the graphic card is detected as intended GTX770M.. running custom driver from upgradeyourlaptop
the rams if also detected as intended... 32gb 1866 dual channel.

a little hiccup is that in 3dmark 11... the gtx770m scores lower... 3dmark 11 detected it as "generic video card" but with a GTX770m driver..

need to research more...and benchmark more... but thankfully can sleep well tonight...

thank you all... and special thanks to joshuachew..
