Hello dear WOW players,
I'm Alberto, Italian expat living in Kuala Lumpur since august 2012. Thanks to your great LowYat mall I finally got a computer, and after all the relocation period and after setting up an internet connection with UNIFI (20 MB) I'm finally ready for some gaming. I'm actually playing Stacraft 2 and Path of Exile, but being an expat and being here alone I was thinking of coming back to WOW for a while, just to give it a shot. I quitted 3 years ago after a non stop period since WOW vanilla day1. I assume the game has changed alot and I'm more that curious about all the new stuff that Blizzard introduced.
Long story short, I have to drop couple of questions about the game client and the latency.
I have the EU client and all my characters are in EU realms, so my first question is: will I be able to play in EU realms from Malaysia? Will the latency be horrible?
Second question is about local realms, I read someone was suggesting to play in Taiwan realms, is it actually a good choice?
Malaysian players have SEA realms or you play in US?
Is there any guild around that would accept a old vanilla raider with years of experience up to Wrath of the Lich King?
I've played Mage (main), Holy priest, Hunter, PVP rogue and Druid.

Thank you for your help!

I didnt play currently but maybe can give some clue for you.
From latency perspective , taiwan(xx to 300ms) realms giving the best respond, follow by US, then EU.
There is no SEA realms, nearest you could get is taiwan. But there is problem using taiwan realms, most of the player are using chinese to communicate, although we got eng guild as well, but definately having some hard time to comply with PUG raid and material/enchant buy/sell.

So basically I'm foked.

Actually I play:

Starcraft 2 in EU in a decent way

Path of Exile is great because there is a login server in Singapore, but when a EU player enter my game I start lagging like hell

Diablo 3 is horrible, cannot play it

League of Legends it's ok, 300 ms, still playable.

I doubt I can enjoy WOW in that situation... thanks for answering tho

Hi AlbertVanK,

Welcome to Malaysia. I guess you have already got a taste of what it is like to play from Asia on European/US servers.

You can expect the latency to be about 200-300ms at best. There are many decent players from the Asia region are able to play at such latency, I'm sure you will get adapted to it.

On the contrary, if latency is what you prefer and you are willing to trade it off for some community experience, you could try TW WoW Servers. In addition to that, it's much cheaper to play in TW than EU (that is probably out of your question).

My advice is, to try out TW realm first. See if you like it or not. There is an English speaking guild (Coffeenottea) in one of the realms, but you should not expect much when it comes to community size... frankly it's very small. When you think it's not your cup of tea, you are free to switch back to EU WoW version. The cost for such is probably the only time wasted from investing in a new toon.

I'm with thetearjerker on that, you can always move your characters to US server or oceanic. I personally think that if you are thinking latency would be a problem during raids, well most of time it is stable around 200-300 on a us server with a VIP20 unifi package that you already have. In fact ppl in the US too have a latency of 100-200. so it's not really something that's far behind for us.

For me, I do think that being able to communicate with ppl around me is more important than doiing high DPS. DPS of course is important, but lets say if you go for an LFR/LFD or Scenario or a pug group (with majority of strangers), but not able to understand ppl around you on what to do, that would suck a lot and ppl would hate you for not being able to understand what to do wand when to do it. Unless you already know what to do and thats a different thing. And considering that ppl are now in ToT raids, you have a whole lot of catching up to do. The new raids are very hard with a whole lot of different mechanics for each boss, that some of the bosses got nerfed more than twice. So communication is the key as sometimes different group has different ways of doing things.

For your third question, whether ppl would accept a vanilla player who stopped at WoTLK, i have no doubt that ppl would take you in, you just need to do some leveling and rep grinding thats all.. other than that you are good to go.

well good luck and happy testing, and I'm sure our malaysian guilds in the oceanic and US servers would be more than welcome to have you join them

Hi Albert,

I started in TBC and stopped when wotlk and resume back when pandaria started. Was from Blackrock, now on Gundrak US. Pretty low population, on AH expect overpriced mats, 800g for living steel buckle

Well if you roll on Gundrak Horde and need a leatherworker, skinner, miner and bs ( currently leveling up my BS )...just msg ingame.

badigol - orc warr
mankukhayun - troll hunter

Im on 5mb unifi and doing LFR pretty well, both melee and range.200ms average.....I play odd hours ( 9am-12pm ) or ( 3pm - 9pm )
