You want scary then get s giant centipede,black widow or something. Tarantulas and scorpions are quite common among pet owners here nowadays.
As for your question " Whats your favourite pet?" I would say big dogs, tarantulas and persian cats.

Maybe he wants to adopt a creepy exotic pet. To him maybe a Tarantula is scary. Not me and faerie though. We have quite a few Tarantulas aint that right girl?

i think the closest to the Komodo here would be its cousin the Monitor LIzard. 1 fruit seller in my town keeps one which roams around his fruit shack and sleeps beneath it. The seller would throw the half eaten or rotten fruits to this monitor for food and the fella would eat. And we aint talking a small monitor but a big one roughly 6-7 feet long from tip to tail and pretty built in size. I would estimate more than 50kg in weight Already tame due to the contact with humans everyday....
