1. my lifebook has C: and D: and the memory is divided into 18.6 GB equally.
So my C: is running out of space and CAN i just cut and paste some docs/prog from C: to D: just to free some space?
Yes u can cut n paste.. but make sure just for single file.. i mean not a program file which u install to the system.. for muvie, mp3 or graphic file it is ok to move it..

2. I did cut and paste a game from C: to D: but it doesnt show the Games icon on the program files, its only a tiny window icon. Is it suppose to be like that?
It is because windows cant locate the new place of the file.. coz u move it manually.. so windows canr detect where the files go.. i usually not install games in c.. i create folder in d for games.. D:/Games.. in ur case.. try to reinstall in D:/

3. i install a sw directly to the D: just now and which folder should it go under? i realized that D: is totally empty not like C: where there are different folders.
You can create the folder urself.. doesnt really matter wut the names is.. just obey windows file/folder name format.. u can create D:/My Software or D:/Program Files

4. is defragmenting necessary?
Defragmenting is to relocate/defrag data in hardisk to make more 'teratur'.. coz everytime u use data in hd.. it will fragmente.. so u will have to defrag it back.. just do disk defragmenting once or twice a week.. sum user run disk defrag after palying heavy games..
