ok here goes. but dont flame me.been using mac.

1. my lifebook has C: and D: and the memory is divided into 18.6 GB equally.
So my C: is running out of space and CAN i just cut and paste some docs/prog from C: to D: just to free some space?

2. I did cut and paste a game from C: to D: but it doesnt show the Games icon on the program files, its only a tiny window icon. Is it suppose to be like that?

3. i install a sw directly to the D: just now and which folder should it go under? i realized that D: is totally empty not like C: where there are different folders.

4. is defragmenting necessary?

thanks. dont laugh.gif

1. If it was a mac , you can cut and paste programs from C to D. No need to install. Since this is windows , you would need to install. As for documents , you would not have a problem

2. You can't

3. Any folder would do

4. Up to you

Yes u can cut n paste.. but make sure just for single file.. i mean not a program file which u install to the system.. for muvie, mp3 or graphic file it is ok to move it..

It is because windows cant locate the new place of the file.. coz u move it manually.. so windows canr detect where the files go.. i usually not install games in c.. i create folder in d for games.. D:/Games.. in ur case.. try to reinstall in D:/

You can create the folder urself.. doesnt really matter wut the names is.. just obey windows file/folder name format.. u can create D:/My Software or D:/Program Files

Defragmenting is to relocate/defrag data in hardisk to make more 'teratur'.. coz everytime u use data in hd.. it will fragmente.. so u will have to defrag it back.. just do disk defragmenting once or twice a week.. sum user run disk defrag after palying heavy games..

I dont think you are quite right. A partition comes with a index and a huge 00000000 space. the index is locating where the file on the huge 00000000 space. due to the harddisk is somekind of permanent writing, it makes it like you can't assume the system can just write a 4gb file directly to a 80gb if you left 5gb free space in your harddisk. The system actually finding "free space" and the data will maybe writing half at the beginning of the harddisk and put another half at the end of the harddisk(let's assume if the system can only find free spaces in this 2 places). So when you trying to read the file, the system need to spin the whole harddisk only can put the file into RAM. that's why defragmenting is needed to make the file arrange back into a single fragment and hence the system can read faster.

If you want to continue to install programs on your C: partition, I'd suggest you to resize the first partition using partitioning tools like Partition Manager from Norton.. or even better to delete it if you don't consider to use the second partition at all.. smile.gif
