Hardcore gamer here as well... That's why I gotta boot up my PC for games tongue.gif Otherwise I couldn't be bothered booting up my PC lol. And yeah... Mac's aren't perfect... There are still things that Mac couldn't do.... like running Ms Access? But most small things can be easily run with Parallels or CrossOver... I know some web designers actually run parallels just to make sure their site looks fine under IE. lol. smile.gif

For the gfx driver you can always use ATI Catalyst for best performance. Also, use ATItool to clock up your gfx card's speed because MBPs come with x1600's with lower than factory default clockspeed. (Not sure if this is still the case for c2d MBPs).

I've read somewhere that they even underclock your c2d intel processor to reduce heat.
*
uhmm... Most laptops will have their processor clockspeeds brought down from time to time to save battery power... (If you're running in battery mode) It reduces heat too but I don't think that's the main reason the clockspeed is brought down... smile.gif Instead, the fan speeds are usually raised to counter the heat.

AFAIK, iStat pro or nano have yet to support reading temp/fan speed on MB/MBP yet.

Yes, just use CoreDuoTemp but personally I use smcFanControl because I can adjust the fan speed as well.

artyca, nice to hear smile.gif btw, guys, you know when you use your thumb drive or hard disk with in a mac, and then use it on a windows pc, a folder .trashes appears right, i remember stumbling upon a software last time where you just run it and select your thumb drive from the program, and the .trashes thing gets removed. i however can't recall the program name and anyway it got lost with my old powerbook....i googled to see for some alternatives...this is what I got :

Or... you could use MainMenu to show Hidden files... If you're someone like me who uses Terminal regularly... just do a 'ls -a' will show hidden files as well smile.gif Then you can just proceed to 'rm -rf [filename]'. Please be cautious when using 'rm -rf' it can remove almost anything, it's like a "Force Delete". For removing regular files just do 'rm [filename]'.

i don't know if this is the place to ask (and please dont flame me smile.gif )
newbie questions:

- are the RAM modules for the Macbook the same as the RAM modules for any other laptops?

- or do i need to buy from apple shop to upgrade?

planning on getting a macbook but want 1gb of RAM instead of the 512mb
thanks for your help

cheers

The ram modules used by MacBook is SO-DIMM DDR2-667 PC5300. It is a common module used by most newer laptops. The ram modules can be bought from anywhere, it doesn't need to be from Apple. If you're buying more rams for ur MacBook, here's a tip:

DO NOT buy Corsair value rams. There are numerous reports that they don't work well with the MacBook's.

Hope this helps. Cheers. smile.gif

Personally, I use Mushkin. Other good brands to note: Kingston, Crucial, Hynix... I'm not sure about the prices in Malaysia (I'm currently in Australia). But I'm guessing it is at least RM230 per stick for 512mb module... But I could be wrong! smile.gif

No, adding ram will NOT void your warranty. It is a very simple process. For MBP, the RAMs are located just beneath the battery. Not sure about MacBook's.

I just upgraded my RAM with a Corsair 1GB, no problems. Before i did this, Corsair came highly recommended by most ppl (compatibility and performance).

I also found out that Corsair manufactured RAM are tested one by one, same goes to Mushkin, whereas Kingston are tested randomly.

By the way, RAM prices are all time high now, I just could wait so bought the 1GB for RM405. Could be lower end of the year they say.

Yeah, I didn't said that all Corsair RAMs are not compatible. I just said to stay away from Corsair VALUE Rams... Since there are numerous bad reports of Corsair Value Rams, I'd say it is better to be safe than sorry smile.gif Not all stores offer exchange on Rams just because they won't work with your MacBook.

@civic and lokgotz: Apple recommends that you at least drain the battery once a month - unplug power and drain it until warning pops up.

@minde: illumination can only happen when it's really dark... i.e. night time. the function keys F9 and F10 can be used to adjust ur keyboard illumination.

The sensors are within the speakers.... Just wait till night time and switch off your lights. lol. I'm surprised you haven't triggered the illumination. It should come naturally at night unless your lights are super bright.

Well, CMIIW but Mac's FS do not need a disk defragment app because the FS defrags the drive as it read/write data. Same goes for most *nix OS.

guys, i need some info - just got my macbook today.

some fella once told a friend of mine that it's not good to always connect the power adaptor to the mac. best to only connect it when the battery is low, as this will prolong battery life.

how true is that?
AFAIK http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=346&pgno=8

This is true. Apple recommends that you let it drain the battery at least ONCE a month.

Cazed, mind telling me what kinda surface do you usually place your macbook on ? It is recommended to place it on a flat surface like a table. Placing it on surfaces like your bed or pillow will affect the airflow beneath your macbook and will hike up your macbook's temperature.
