Care to name a few?

I really want to get a macbook, especially when one only needs to pay RM400 for a 30GB iPod.

Care to explain?

Can it be seen as a table with two drawers?
*
hey feynman... yea... pretty much u can see it that way... there are a couple of things tat u wanna be aware of is that:

1. U need to remap some keys in ur keyboard as the delete key in a mac is the backspace in Windows... thr's a nifty little software tat can help u do tat...

2. some drivers (like wat lokgotz) said will not be readily available right now when u install windows, i.e. the isight camera, the touchpad. U will not be able to use the camera BUT u can use the touchpad... juz without the two finger scroll and right click...

3. other concerns is the change of habit with the whole CTRL+C or +V... in the mac environment, u use the APPLE+C or +V instead...

4. the Mac Office works exactly the same like in WIndows EXCEPT tat thr's no Access for Macs... mayb thr's some other programs tat can help u keep a database if u use tat alot...

5. If u get iWork 06, u'll not even wanna use ur Powerpoint anymore... this software suite is juz plain eye candy... or u can always opt for the free Openoffice... (i think thr's a mac version)...

6. If u r a gamer, then hmmm....mayb u wanna hold tat switch... UNLESS u r plannin to get a macbook pro... which is pretty decent frm wat i've heard BUT wit tat kind of money, u can get a PC wit a dual gpu and all kinds of power stuff installed...

7. iLife 06 is juz super... i've never had more fun updating my address book!... hahah... cause brthdays or anniversaries automatically appear in iCal... and in iCal, u get to d/l all kinds of readily made calendars, i.e. the Malaysia public holidays!... which is DAMNED important to me... hehehe...

Overall, i've juz converted to the OS X and lemme tell u, i am pretty pleased tat i even got rid of my WIndows installation and use OS X full time... of course i'm no gamer... smile.gif

I don't think I have time to play games.........university, mana ada masa punya?

I need windows because I'm afraid that some softwares which I may want to use in my final years can only run on windows. So that's the problem. Maple and Matlab anyone?

Can we use pirated softwares on a mac? iLife and all don't come cheap.

university???.... dude... school's the best man... mana tak ade masa punya? hehehe...

Maple and Matlab tu apa?... some engineering or mathematical software ah?... to solve ur concern, get a macbook... install the bootcamp... use the mapkey.exe in the windows powertool to kautim the delete button... install ur matlab... install ur maple... do ur school work in it... for ur personal life, use OS X.. hehe...

iLife comes preinstalled... so no worries abt it being expensive... as for pirated stuff... erm... technically u can install them... BUT legally... no u can't... smile.gif

Mana ada masa untuk main game punya? Kalau ada masa pun pergi jalan-jalan. A waste to look oneself up in a room to play games when one should be out doing fun stuff.

I'm not doing AS so I may not necessarily need to use matlab or any other mathematical software, just want to be certain that if I need it, my macbook would be compatible.

A for pirated software. I can get them from lowyat right?

thanks lokgotz and supafreak. a word of advice. i am a mac and windows user. i shall give you unbiased opinions.

why i need/like windows :

- i can do programming, if ur an IT student, this is important
- some softwares are easier to obtain
- most people use it, there are times when we share files and so on. some files such as powerpoint files and excel files just don't work well with office for mac

why i like/need mac :

- peace of mind
- intuitive interface
- cool functions
- can do basic stuff i need to
- easy networking

tough i love macs, i there are some stuff why i hate em :

- recent quality problems
- lappies get hot fast

- there is no such thing as 100% compatibility with windows, people who claim that, esp. apple store staff are just bullshitting and lieing to you.

i have used it, i know.

powerpoint presentations - sometimes the alignments go out, pics don't turn up well, interface is old, ala powerpoint 2000 for windows.

excel - when you copy and paste stuff from the net, formatting does not appear well, minor compatibility problems when opened in excel for windows.

word - some pics don't open well, minor alignment problems that occurs at times.

you have to individually open each picture to view them full screen, not like in windows where you can go back and forth without the need to open another picture.

anyhows, the fact is windows is still dominant, we still need it as we need to interchange files and so on. boot camp is still beta. macbooks might not be able to run vista well as they come with not too good graphics card.

i enjoyed my mac experience. i do hope apple comes out with macbooks with decent graphics card to run vista. leopard will be great. they still have not let out their top secret about leopard yet.

i wonder why ppl still rely on Powerpoint when they have Keynote.
And, that's M$ problem since they built that software...

For those who want to "view photos in fullscreen without individually open them", select all the photos u want, right click and go to slideshow.

no you don't get my point do you, of course we have keynote which is great. but when you come about sharing your presentations thats when u will realise it, am sure you know NOT everyone has a MAC and when you do a presentation in windows..... btw, thanks for teaching me that pic thinggy.

btw, anyone knows how to delete the .trashes folder from your removable hard disk when u plug into windows after using it on a mac. there is a software i found last time, but some friend of mine accidentally deleted it while playing with it and i never knew abt it, went and cleared the trash. dun quite remember the name...will try googling when i have the time and post it here.

Bear in mind , Vista would still *run* as GMA 950 is a DirectX 9 Card but minus the eye candy [you could turn it on but again it can't take it] , so its possible to run Vista

Pirated - Bah...*me*...pirate...muhahahahhahahahhahahaha! If you know the right place on the Internet and the right place...you can get virtually anything..including mac games...But again , thats if you know how to embrace yourself to the dark side.....Okay ,

MathLab ?...I thought there is a MathLab version for Mac. AFAIK , I have it installed on my PowerPC Mac [The Trial] , so it works....

Oh , you can run Windows [native speeds] on top of MacOS X itself. So you dont have to worry about dual-booting and stuff like that. Hate OSX ?. you can always dump it and run Windows !

yea but let someone run windows vista on macbook before i buy it so i can see the benchmarks etc. yea, pirated stuff are easy to get, just that some particular software that does certain things...they might not be available/created in the first place.

yea i know u can parallels to do that.

u mac fanatics are at times just too much/silly. up to me what i say, this is a public forum, dun act childish telling me to dump so and so and go for this and that. up to me, who are you to tell me? NO ONE! get it! face it, nothing is perfect, mac is not perfect...of course is good and so on, but not perfect, even windows is good, but not perfect.

i will still be using a mac and windows too.

say what u want i dun care, some facts can't be changed.

edit : sorry if i sound harsh, i am just expressing my views. IMHO, Macs are more than excellent and i am loving every minute of my mac experience. just that there are some things that i am not happy about, feynman asked for some opinions so i just gave him my views. you gotta admit that it is not perfect, coz it really is not, and there is no such thing that it is perfect. Don't simply bash Win too, of course it has its problems and all, but then again 90% of the world is using it, it is good in a way, tell me if Windows is so bad, how come 90% of the world is using it? If you say Mac's are expensive, Mac's are getting cheaper these days. Lack of support, well there are good retail stores coming up, lack of marketing - well, yes in malaysia, then again how much can it boost the percentage?

dun get me wrong, apple is a great company and they make good stuff. if ur an IT student and planning to a get a mac laptop, it depends..if ur doing a lot of programming, get a Windows laptop instead and perhaps a Mac Mini. Remember Boot Camp is beta, tough the final version shud be out with Leopard.

I just booked a MacBook. Got the black version, gonna bump it up to 2GB soon.

Thanks n20nine. Am actually in KL, but might look into it the next time I'm in Penang.

Have any of you guys tried the new MacBook firmware update yet? I'm hesitant to, as I like that my MacBook is super quiet as I've never even heard the fans on before. Even if it gets a little hot, I just love the silent operation of it.

With this update, temps are supposed to come down, but the fans will be on more often as a result. Tell me what you guys think or how it goes if you install the update.

First thing, I really want to talk face to face with people like you, n20nine because I think there will be many things that we can discuss together, maybe someday. smile.gif

Since like you said this is a 'public forum' so let me give my 2 cents of comment.

Second things, you should carefully read prasys post:

"Bear in mind , Vista would still *run* as GMA 950 is a DirectX 9 Card but minus the eye candy [you could turn it on but again it can't take it] , so its possible to run Vista"

He's not saying Vista will run perfectly on MB, Vista would still run, mean not running perfectly. Like someone before is asking wether FCP can run on MB or not, it will run but not perfectly, that is the different n20nine. tongue.gif

Third things, AFAIK you can just google for MB running Vista, the latest news is Microsoft is demo Vista on MBP and there's many more, including Vista on BootCamp and Parallels and also Vista on MacMini and MB, so you can just simply google it. rolleyes.gif

Fourth things, we're not teaching you or anyone to dump anything, just giving an option that you have if you are using Intel Mac. in Windows, you can dump windows to go for Linux, but how many common people that know about Linux? Can you tell me? icon_idea.gif

Fifth things, 90% of world is using windows because it's has been a standard, like common people who is not IT geeks would not know what is AMD and what is PPC. When these people want to buy a computer they will ask "Ini pakai pentium berapa ah? Berapa Ghz?" They would not understand even you take an hour to explain to them why AMD FX-55 which clocked 2.xGhz still can beat Intel Extreme 3.73Ghz, these people never know what is PPC, TDP, RAM latency, because they only know the standard things only. People start to know Mac when Apple go for Intel and the latest news is Apple is at third rank for notebook manufacturer. People have to buy Mac computer to use MAC OS, so that is why many is saying that Mac is expensive even it is not really expensive. To use windows, you just need any computer to use it, less than 1K you already can have Celeron based PC with WinXP license, but Apple? At least 2.5K for lowest spec of MacMini. As for me Apple and Windows user is in different level of usage and level of knowledge, and also level of desire. But I don't know you. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sixth things, actually I can do programming on Mac, I've post somewhere in this forum the software for it, you can just search for it. And I also can do Electronic engineering circuit on Mac, since I start to use mac, I never have problem with it except for AutoCAD stuff. But I don't think IT student do AutoCAD, right? cool.gif

There's a lot more I want to type, but my eyes feel sleepy, maybe next time I can continue, but as for now let we 'the mac fanatics' know your opinion, n20nine. wink.gif
