All Internet connections, regardless of whether you're using DSL, fibre, cable or mobile, require modems. In the case of Streamyx, an ADSL2+ modem, which may either be a separate piece of equipment or built into the (wireless) router.

Am not sure about your particular setup, as to whether TM supplied you with BOTH an ADSL modem and a router, or whether the router is doing the modem function as well. I don't know if the ASUS router you bought has an ADSL modem built-in either.

If you have 2 separate pieces of equipment, it will look something like:

(Phone line IN) splitter (voice line to phone)/(DSL line OUT) --> (DSL line IN) ADSL modem (Ethernet line OUT) --> (Ethernet line IN) router

In this case, you may well have to find out whether your ADSL modem is acting like a bridge (in which case your router *may* be the one logging you in and so you need to instruct the router to connect to your Streamyx account using your Streamyx username/password) or as a router (in which case the modem is logging you in and replacing the router is in fact just a matter dropping it in).

If you have 1 integrated router, it will look like:

(Phone line IN) splitter (voice line to phone)/(DSL line OUT) --> (DSL line IN) router

In this case, your router (if it's not acting as a bridge) is doing the logging in and you need to give it the correct details.

thanks for the detailed explanation.

I think mine would be something like the first set-up.

I haven't tried the suggested solution as above because I've been busy, But I would think my asus router does not have ADSL function (as far as I would know, does not have modem functionality).

So I would have to use the existing streamyx ADSL router and use the ethernet as per your explanation but disable the wifi functionality, correct? - so it will use the wifi function on the asus router.

If your Streamyx router has the ADSL modem built-in, then it would be the second scenario you had originally. Having replaced it with the ASUS, yes, I suspect you would have to switch to the first set-up. Which is actually better, because if one fails, that's the only thing you replace.

I would actually recommend you ditch the ISP-provided rubbish, to be honest. DLink makes (or used to sell) a standalone ADSL2+ modem called the DSL-520B which is incredibly rock-solid. I had it running for about 2-3 years, 24/7, never dropped the connection, never had to be restarted, awesome stuff. You can buy similar models from other manufacturers as well (look at the reviews), around RM100-150, I should think. But yes, you could try using the Streamyx modem/router, turn off the WiFi, and then connect your ASUS to it as well. You do have to read up on how to make the whole thing work, though.

If you want, PM me and I can sell you my old DLink (which was still working perfectly when I upgraded to fibre). I'll send it to your place if in Klang Valley and help set up your connection, too.

haha sadly:

1) This Asus router I bought is new (just bought) - So I'm planning to put it to use.
2) I'm in Kuching.

But Im just unsure if I use set up one will i still get dropping wifi due to overheating or something like that which I'm experiencing now currently using the Dlink router + adsl provided by streamyx.

It's unlikely. ASUS routers - or at least mine - are pretty good in terms of staying up. DLink routers are not so good, that is true - before I upgraded mine to DD-WRT, I had to restart the DLink DIR-620 wireless router about once a week. After upgrading it, more like once every 2 months if at all. ASUS is even better - restarts only when power cut or flash new firmware.

Again, please bear in mind that you will now need 2 separate devices; your ASUS router will connect to an ADSL2+ modem via Ethernet cable. If you set up your new modem to be a bridge, you let your ASUS router connect to Streamyx, and I guarantee you never have to bother much about either the modem or the router.
