1 year later? does this mean that some lasik patients may depend on eye drops for the rest of their life?
Depends. Everybody is different, but younger people should have better and faster chance of recovery.I had slight dry eyes before going for lasik (apparently had traces of some infection which healed but tear glands not fully healed), but doctor said was eligible as not too bad.
Had dry eyes post op, as expected. Used it up to 2 years but doctor warned that eyes may become dependent and tear glands may never fully heal.
At this point I was dropping 1-2 times a day, as needed only. Usually after shower or swim. Tried to quit cold turkey but when very very dry I will use the drops, maybe 3-4 times a week only. After 1 month I decided to just quit cold turkey and just yawn forcefully to generate tears instead of using eye drops.
This was around 1.5 years ago and have not used eye drops ever since. Was more concerned on eyes being reliant on drops than the cost to buy drops for rest of my life. Also convenience of no need to carry eye drops everywhere I go.
