Hi guys, I am new to the forum. I am from Bangladesh. I am 24 yrs old and have mild / moderate myopia (-2.50) in both eyes and -1.00 astigmatism in left eye. I feel so uncomfortable in glasses. Almost all the time I have to wear glasses to be functional. I can read without glasses and can do very close works without glasses but whenever I look around without glasses I feel like I am half blind. Its horrible. Everything is blurry. Nothing is clear without glasses. I feel so upset for them who have severe myopia. They must be practically totally blind. I think Lasik is a blessing for them but what about those who have mild to moderate myopia ? I have been considering Lasik since my teenage days but I am still apprehensive about it. I even did pre-lasik tests. The doctor says I am very good candidate since I have enough corneal thickness (560 microns) to correct my myopia but still I am very very tensed. I heard after lasik anybody can suffer corneal ectasia. This is the most serious complication of Lasik. It can happen even years after the procedure. Is it true that thousands of lasik patients are now suffering from ectasia ? OMG! this is so risky. I don't know what I will do now. I had so much hope that one day I can see clearly without uncomfortable glasses but now I don't think I can ever risk it. I find it very embarrassing to wear glasses in a gathering. Is there any safe way to treat my eyes? I want to see clear. I often get so depressed for not being able to see clearly like a normal person. Nobody in my family is myopic apart from me. Being myopic is the biggest frustration of my life so far. I sometime cry alone and pray to Allah Almighty to cure my visual disorder. I am getting emotional now. Sorry. I can't even put contacts in my eyes. I tried it but just couldn't.
Really very depressed these days for my eye condition. The depression is now affecting my day to day life so much. Its also hugely affecting my self confidence. I am really tired of carrying glasses all the time on my face. Have spot on nose due to continuous wearing of glasses.
I absolutely hate wearing glasses all the time but seems like I have no more choice. Doing operation is like gambling with eyes. Anything can happen even years after the operation. Its not safe. When it comes to eyes no body should take even 1 % chance but the Lasik industry is saying they are damaging 5% eyes only ! The person who was the chief of the FDA team which approved lasik devices is now saying FDA did a huge mistake to approve it. Pioneering Taiwanese lasik surgeon just stopped doing more lasik operation to prevent epidemic of eye injury in long term. Once you get Ectasia due to weak and thin cornea after lasik the only solution is corneal transplant. This is a huge risk and this is the only fact which is keeping me away from getting Lasik.

There are numerous websites on net to warn people about Lasik dangers. Lifeafterlasik, lasik disaster, lasik complications, lasermyeyes etc. There are some scary information like - Lasik flap never heals. It can be lifted years after the initial procedure. There is always a microscopic scar in eyes that underwent lasik. - Lasik thins and weakens the cornea by cutting on a healthy cornea. Weak and thin cornea after lasik is in risk of serious disease called Ectasia (corneal bulging). There have been numerous case of post lasik ectasia. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_quer...j3j1j1j3j2.11.0. There are also many you tube videos warning people about Lasik. The Campaign to Outlaw Lasik http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e51t9Zgz4C8Before You Let Them Cut on Your Eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQFP8y6MmUM&feature=relmfuThe lasik industry says the procedure has 95% success / satisfaction rate. What about the rest 5% ? This procedure seems like a controversial procedure. This post has been edited by MyopicEyes: Apr 26 2012, 07:17 PM

I don't know if those are conspiracy type websites but they have sources of those information. Its really hard to ignore those information in those websites because not a single fact sounds untrue.
I was saving money for the procedure but after going through those websites and youtube videos I am now totally depressed. Seems like I have to live my life with glasses forever.

Glad to hear you guys are doing well after Lasik but still I am apprehensive about the procedure. What if Ectasia occurs years after the surgery ? There are so many reports about it. Just type 'corneal ectasia after lasik'. You will find several reports on it.

Wish there was a risk free procedure to fix eyesight. Have lasik and then constantly worry about getting ectasia, infection, inflammation etc in some point of time. We misfortunate people who are not blessed with good eyesight are ready to cut our eyes open to get rid of glasses even if it carries serious complication. A person with good eyesight will never understand how it feels to have bad vision and how glasses affect the quality of life. This post has been edited by MyopicEyes: Jul 4 2012, 09:14 PM

QUOTE(jialat @ Jul 4 2012, 05:49 PM) Dont worry, if you really unlucky to have ectasia post LASIK, i can refer you to a specialist who does lenses for failed surgery, the lens reduced glare, halo and ghosting effect with power correction. He gets lot of referral cases from eye specialist. I know there are treatments for post-lasik Ectasia. Crosslinking, Rigid contact lens, Intacs, IOP lowering medication etc BUT the most nasty part of ectasia is glasses and soft contacts will not work anymore to correct vision.

QUOTE(starmexx @ Aug 25 2013, 10:53 AM) Actually is Lasik dangerous??? Any common side effects? There are many side effects of Lasik in long term. You could develop a condition called ectasia. If you develop it your life will be completely ruined. Having ectasia is similar to keratoconus. It will progress untill you are completely blind. Even glasses don't work for ectasia patients. Hard lens is only solution to have decent vision. If you want to minimize the risk of getting ectasia then do PRK / Lasek / Epi-Lasik. It doesn't penetrate the eye like lasik does but it also has its own risks. It removes a thin layer called bowman's layer permanently. So its also not a good thing for your precious cornea. If you want to be glasses free unfortunately there is no safe way. If you don't wanna be blind in 15 years please don't do lasik. Its really harmful surgery. I don't get why this surgery is not banned yet. There was a time when RK surgery was popular but now those who had RK are now having severe vision problems 15 or 20 years later and there is no fix for it. Now RK surgery is banned in many countries. There would be a time when this lasik will also be banned for blinding millions of patients. This post has been edited by MyopicEyes: Aug 25 2013, 04:06 PM

QUOTE(jialat @ Aug 26 2013, 07:44 PM) Ectasia will develop when the cornea is too thin, thus there is a limitation on LASIK correction. They wouldn't go below the safe level of residual corneal thickness.
If really ectasia does happen, then the progression can be stopped by cross linking, and / or fit with post-surgery lens / Kerasoft IC lens to improve vision back to normal level. But of course I agree with you, all surgery do have risk, so please think long and hard before getting it done since its irreversible process. Lasik thins the cornea. Don't you know thin corneas are at risk of ectasia? Our corneas naturally get thinned as we age but it gets harder with age. Normally natural changes in cornea don't cause ectasia but when you cut it in half then remove tissue to thin it more then the patient is in life long danger of getting sight threatening ectasia at their latter stage even if they have some 5 or 10 years of good vision. This lasik procedure is inherently extremely harmful surgery but the industry is a money sucker industry. So they don't say these facts about long term damage to cornea. They just need money from patient. Since its an elective surgery if they say truth about it their business will be hugely affected. FDA really screwed up while giving approval to lasik. If a patient really wants to take risk then should take it with PRK and its modern versions Lasek and Epi-Lasik since these procedures are less harmful than lasik because there is no cutting of the cornea. Just a few days more to recover from it. Can't a patient take some pain after the surgery for long term safety? This post has been edited by MyopicEyes: Aug 29 2013, 03:32 AM
