QUOTE(onelove89 @ Aug 8 2008, 01:14 PM)
say if you're cert only allow you to work in msia , then we can only get to specialize in msia? How does the specializing thing works? I don really understand this part. can I go overseas like US to take a course to specialise in say cardiology? sorry =/ heaps of questions.
*
Firstly, to specialise in Msia is not an easy thing for a non-Bumi.
And the best choice u have outside Msia is US, with the developed English speaking countries (Aus, UK) closing their doors to foreign medical graduates.

And it's not easy to go US either, and do take note, the applications to their residency come from graduates of some of the best medskols in the world, eg Edin, Glasgow, Melbourne, Queensland.....so an applicant from a less well-knowned and newly built medskols (most private medskols in msia are) really got to present with strong USMLE grades.

But it would be better if u r holding US citizenship, which i assume u r not.

hahaha.. yeah.. but the malaysians and singaporeans don't look up to the china chinese there. apparently they can be quite dirty...and strange. Racism among our own race.

Yeah.. no, we don't have plans to settle down in Singapore. would be to stressful for the kids. and i want a garden!

Erm...... well, obviously i chose dentistry is because of the PAY! haha, totally fell asleep when i did my attachment at SUnway Medical back in 04 when they brought me round to the pharmacy, so i scratched that out. My bf is doing pharmacy coz his dad is a pharmacist, but he has grown to love the course. I mean if you go into the corporate side of pharmacy, I'm sure the sky is the limit too.
I also chose dentistry because I didn't like the long hours put in by doctors..and i didn't want to sit behind a microscope as how I probably would if I stuck to my initial plans of a biotech/biomed double degree at Monash. Furthermore, anything non-science was not an option as I would've sucked in anything else. maths was a nononononoo.. so yeah, if you're in science, you only got biotech/engineering/doctor/dentist/pharmacist/nursing etc.. and other fancy-pants science degrees as wel.

I like talking, I like creativity, I like biology, I like meeting new people, I like money.... that's why I'm in dentistry.

Honesty. I got it. tongue.gif

The China Students are called PRC in NUS, and they tend to group together, so basically u dun get much chance to communicate with them.

"Stressful" is really smtg subjective, and depends alot on ur expectations.

And somehow i think stress is proportional to competitiveness. I guess most parents would want their children to be more competitive right.

Yup, indonesian and russian grads are often looked down by even consultants in m'sian govt hospitals. However, this should not happen untill his/her competency is graded below doctors who are graduated from non-indon/russian university. I think.

Oh btw, limeuu. Would like to know more about USMLE, do one has to take step 1, 2 CK CS and step 3 to obtain a medical licence in order to work in US? I've heard from my friend in IMU that upon passing step 1, one can actually do their residency in US already. Is that true? And are there any chances to do our residency in US upon graduation by escaping the 2 years housemanship and 3 years compulsory govt service? If yes, what are the procedures? Thanks a million for answering.

Edge85, McD is opening? Are you serious?
*
Hey csrulez, i heard step 1 is enough for residency application, but most programmes would only take up those who have finished step 2.

most foriegners appyling for US residency have already worked some years as the application is very competitive. Impt is to have clincal experience in US (that's why do ur elective in US!), good USMLE scores (must be higher than the average scores in US lar), strong recommendations letter from some big names in US(during ur elective there, or while doing something else there, eg PhD), and work experience.

lots of info can be found at

Complex is for Osteopathic practice in US, and USMLE is for Allopathic, so they are diff things. Only USMLE step 1 and 2 needed for applications to residency. i'm not sure abt step 3, but probably it's taken during ur residency there.

USMLE itself is not tough if u consider other licensing exams like the one in HK. but do take note that priority in application process is as followed
US medical graduates> US citizens in foreign medskols> foreigners in foriegn medskols.

so most foreigners from foreign medskols are in those not so competitive residencies eg, IM, FM, paeds
Surgey, neurosurg, ortho, derma, ENT are considered very competitive and seldom take in them.

as i said , lots of info can be found at

thanks! of course, I will.

hey siang, being obese means u r very likely to have high bp, blood glucose and lipid level. But dun worry, u r still too young to have any medical problems. so now the priority is really to reduce ur weight. try to do it slowly, mabbe lose 1kg each month, so by the time u become an HO, u will have an ideal weight and muscular body to show off arnd in the hospital.

this is a very long commitment, just like ur medical education, so must start off slowly and be determined enough. I believe u can do it man! rclxms.gif

True. Recently, I saw some patients talking bad about a fat indian doctor in SJMC behind his back after he left. The conversation was in Hokkien and it goes something like this (direct translation):

Patient A: He know or don't know one? Ask me reduce my weight but he ownself so fat. If so serious, he early already reduce lah. What a hypocrite.
Patient's friend: Ya loh.

if you have above 3.8, and put ums or unimas as 1st choice, you stand a good chance.......this is proven in recent intake batches.......

I think u only saw the tip of the iceberg, there are many more rejects out there who got the same results and put Unimas/UMS as their 1st choice. so there's a slim chance someone wif 3.83/4 will get into medicine.

u mean TER 99...

by the above statements, getting < TER90 is a crime, because that would mean more Dr Death in hospitals...
but then again, the government do send bumi students with poor/mediocre results into public med universities, and what difference would that make? why don't you argue about that...since bumis entering public universities should be in a larger scale, ie even more Dr Deaths from there...

so what do you get bashing some chinese or indian med students in an online forum? where your message won't really reach out anyways...
*
he talked abt both the non-bumis in IPTS and the bumis in IPTA

just wan to know smtg la...
IMU, AIMST, Manipal,Pmd, Monash n UCSI.
which uni is the best n rank all the uni i stated here...
*
I guess it's impt to know ur prioirty.
if u want cheap, go AIMST.
if u want prestigious foreign degree, but not likely to have opportunity to work there, then choose PMC/Monash
if u want prestigious foreign degree, but with the opportunity to work there, then IMU-PMS
if u like terengganu, then UCSI
if u like India and a medskol with strong alumni , then Manipal

and of course teaching style (PBL, traditonal, system based) is also an impt factor i guess.

oopps... this is ur results?

PA B+
Math C+
CHEM B
BIO B-
CGPA is 2.82 only...

i think u r kidding wif us dude
