Family of LRT site crane accident victim seeks answers

KUALA LUMPUR: For the past three years, A. Vijayasingam drove every day from Kampung Pandan to work near Ara Damansara without any incident until last Friday.

That day, Vijayasingam's Hyundai Sonata was caught in rush hour traffic along Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang when a 10-tonne construction equipment hoisted by a crane at an LRT extension site nearby fell and crushed his car.

The development executive was killed instantly in the freak accident while another driver, Arifpuddin Mansoruddin, 42, in a Nissan Frontier, was injured.

Vijayasingam's family is finding it difficult to come to terms with his sudden death and wants answers to how such an accident could have happened.

His brother-in-law Jai Ganesh, 36, said Vijayasingam had travelled along that route daily from his home in Kampung Pandan to get to work near Ara Damansara.

“My brother-in-law was a good and responsible man. It is hard for us to accept this,” he said, adding that Vijayasingam's wife was grief-stricken by the tragedy.

“She's inconsolable,” he said, adding that the construction company should have assured the safety of all motorists travelling on that particular stretch of road.

“The family is looking at the possibility of taking legal action against the construction company,” he said, adding that Vijayasingam's funeral and cremation were held at around 10am yesterday.

Later, during a visit to Vijayasingam's family by Prasarana senior officials, its group director for infrastructure services Masnizam Hisham described the incident as “truly unfortunate”.

“We came to offer our condolences and extend a helping hand to the family,” she said.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said they were investigating the case from several angles, adding that so far, no criminal element had been found.

Previous crane related accidents in Malaysia

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...1835&sec=nation

Friday's incident echoes the tragic death of corporate consultant Dr Liew Boon Horng on Dec 30, 2005, when an iron mould fell from the 20th floor of a building onto his BMW, killing him on the spot.

In 2009, two foreign construction workers were killed in Bangsar Utama when a crane carrying building materials fell on them following a sudden cable snap.

In 2011, a seven-storey high crane tower in George Town toppled over and fell on a pre-war house, killing bachelor Liang Yit Kwang and injuring three others.

Last year, driver Zambri Miah and his two colleagues narrowly escaped being crushed by a falling crane in Jalan Ampang.

this should be expected then.. the 1st one answerable definitely the safety guy. if he can prove that he has done everything within his power, then the consequence will go to the project manager.

Given by current gomen intergrity, all the above evidence will be created instaneously.

Automatically they will still claim it is freak accident.

Let see the outcome of the investigation in a week or two.
If more than that....we will know there is some hanky panky things

there will be scapegoat after this. ppl pointing fingers n last2 the one to be blamed is the one who's handling the crane.

the top management will be left out. they are the one should be responsible for this incident.

Definitely it will be paid out. If he holds a few life policies, his spouse will get the insurance money if she is nominated.

Having said that, please check and make sure the beneficiaries is updated. Getting insurance or EPF is just the first step. Updating the beneficiaries will ensure our loved ones do not have to wait in times of crisis.

How is it that TRC never learnt from their mistakes? And how dare Prasarana say that it's a traffic accident, not a site accident. All construction-related matters should be the responsibility of the contractor, including safety measures when transporting any material.
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...0020&sec=nation

2nd accident already happened, and it's only 2 months apart. I wonder if the contractor actually allocated sufficient budget for safety measures, or this is another 'cincai' contractor...
