You can choose to disable it and if you wish there are 2 choices : ripple or light effect. Never like such stuffs and have it disabled

For myself, saturated high contrast is good for live wallpapers and general theming. For photography you don't want that lol

I just plain view on basic use as a phone. I did not touch much on new features. For new features, in my opinion, Samsung add-on a lot motion features, some of it is useful (previous Smart Stay), some is useless (Smart Scroll, Flip page), some is for fun only (Air View, Smart Pause). HTC wise is Blinkfeed, this feature I quite like it actually, it is something new in Android, you get a total different taste and view on Android device. But if you love customization, Blinkfeed as main page will dismiss all possible customization, lucky HTC still add an option set others page as default homescreen. This part HTC do it really well, it will be much better if got option to completely turn it off. Xperia Z wise, sorry, they is no extra features add on at all, it just basically a pure Jelly Bean with better theming to make it look much nicer.

Ya, but without new features, the phone became like nothing special, so no matter how, the manufacture must squeeze in some extra features, updates the spec or change the design.

Ya, if I own S4, I think the only sensor I turn on is the usual good Smart Stay. The rest can completely switch off. The Air View probably can on for show off only, it is not practical for my usage. It never is even on Note II.
