Hi everyone,
I have been using Maxis Fiber for a year already and have been happy with the service (my housemate however isn't with its DotA SG server latency though) .
Lately however, I've noticed that Maxis is starting to trim down access to places like PirateBay and my torrents have been throttled to a dialup crawl.

I would like to telnet access my Thomson router and change its DNS settings to use Google DNS instead. However, the page linked at the start of this thread is a little vague regarding what needs to be set. Especially when their example is for O2 networks and only contains 2 defined DNS servers for their internet connection.

Clearly, our Maxis list of DNS servers is 8 items long and configures access to "eMGMT" and "eVOIP". So certainly I'm hesitant and having doubts about the website's instructions to just call "dns server route flush" to "Clear" the DNS list.

Is there anywhere in LYT forums where I could refer to of a fellow Maxis Fiber user successfully configuring their router to use Google DNS? Or could any sifu here assist me from not screwing up my connection?

Also, how do I identify if my router is the supposed v3 Thomson routerwhere Maxis has blocked changing the DNS servers?

Thanks.

Need advice on upgrading my internet connection. I am now using Streamyx 1mbps package(old one). Its either Unifi5mbps/8or4mbps streamyx or maxis home fibre 10mbps. From what I heard, maxis fibre sucks. Asking for advice from all of you. Btw, I live in kota kinabalu, sabah and my area dont have Unifi. (my friend got 4mbps but it seems my house dont have port. Probably cuz my lorong most house is for university students)

If you play online games a lot, then Maxis may not be the one for you. Not sure if they have ever overcame their latency problems to SG servers.
Otherwise, you'd save cash for a faster fiber without having to pay extra for an additional (government censored) TV service.

After some careful experimenting, I've successfully added the Google DNS addresses to my router DNS settings. However I'm unsuccessful in removing the pre-configured Maxis DNS server addresses as displayed below.

My internet is still being forced through the censorship DNS as I find that the usual government-censored sites are still inaccessible.
Am I missing something in my configuration? Or am I doomed in 1984 with this locked down router?

Your broadband connection is only as strong on your weakest link. And recently, my fiber connection experienced a failure of its weakest link:
The Made In China P.O.S Huawei VPN modem that TM provided. Big surprise there dry.gif

My VPN modem started having problems when booting up. The Power light would blink when it was doing its startup diagnostics. But the moment the diagnostics completed, and the light stops blinking, the modem reboots and all the lights go off and it would repeat in a boot loop. Sometimes it was so bad that the power light would come on and it would immediately reboot, not even able to start its diagnostics.

So I went through the customer service process to issue a complaint and arrange for a TM technician to repair this problem. And I went for 3 days without internet while waiting for slow-as-ever-TM to confirm when they can send their technician over to assist the Maxis technician.

When the appointment date came, the Maxis technician called up and asked if he could push the morning appointment earlier ... by a whole hour!
And even then, he arrived almost a half an hour earlier than we arranged.
thumbup.gif So much kudos for Maxis and their technicians in getting things done thumbup.gif

This in comparion to two TM technicans in previous repair jobs who totally-FFK me and Maxis technicians who've already arrived at my place mad.gif

He took one look at the rebooting modem and immediately knew what was the problem. He did a quick test with a spare TM UniFi router to ensure the DSL line and reception was still okay, then swapped out the power adapter for the Huawei modem and the problem was solved immediately! No need to wait for the TM technician.
He said that faulty power adapters for these Huawei modems are a very common problem and that Maxis technicians are seeing these fail left and right.

So if one experiences this similar problem, all one needs to do is swap out the cheapo adapter with a spare one that puts out 12V and at least 1A until they get the TM and their technician to get there to replace their Made in China crap modem.

You can get those replacement AC adaptor from Jalan Pasar @ about RM35 each.
Another idea : turn it off when not in use.... Anything that runs 24x7 are bound to fail sooner 3x faster than those who uses it for 8 hours a day.

Here's the funny thing: I wasn't running it 24x7. I was routinely switching all my network devices off when I leave for work every morning. The technician told me that the power adapter is strained with a power surge when you first turn on the system. To help minimize it, he reccommends to switch off the power switch on the modem first before switching the wall socket supplying the power.
