Yeah, that's exactly what I've been trying to do. I have Windows 8.1 x64 and for some reason every new Windows iteration makes it harder and harder to play games by preventing even "administrator" users from updating files without jumping through hoops. Tried this several times and couldn't get it to work, .....

Figured it out. For some reason (even though there is only ONE user on this machine, an administrator,) I needed to update the permissions for the host file such that all users could modify the file.

If anyone else is having the same problem do this:

From the folder as listed in the quote above (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc), right click on hosts and choose properties.
Switch to the Securities tab, and there is an Edit button (should say next to it "click to change permissions".)
For all users/user groups (selected via the upper window,) and check the box marked Full Control (this should also check the Modify and Write boxes.)
Repeat for any remaining user groups.
Click Apply, then you can close the properties window.
Open the hosts file in Notepad and
"Modify the host file on your system to include:

174.35.56.164  wildstar.patcher.ncsoft.com
174.35.56.164  wildstar.patcher.ncsoft.com.cdngc.net"
When you're finished, you should be able to save the new hosts file.

Afterwards (if you're worried about it) you can go back to the securities tab in the properties the hosts file and un-check Full Control, Modify, and Write for any users/user groups you're not sure of.
