most probably radiator fan..
while at it, u might want to changed thermostat as well..
unchanged thermostat will get jammed n cause overheat also..

An update.  Took it to Proton shop.  Mechanic removed thermostat completely,  said wasn't needed and was getting jammed.  Replaced the water pump.

Issue is better,  but on hot day if I turn AC on, it still overheats.
Checked the fan, seems to work ok.  I've had some weird electrical problem before,  so will check alternator.  Aside from that I'm getting some new fan relays.  The fan doesn't seem to always turn on.  Is there anything I can do about that?  Will I need to replace the radiator as well?

removing the thermostat is not the cure. u will have slow warm-up time and the water will just flow freely, limiting its time to absorb heat from engine.
if u notice, the thermostat will have small opening when open-up, this will create some pressure before the thermostat. so the water have some time to collect heat from engine.

if want to remove thermostat, remove the center spring and disc leaving the outer disc only.
so u will have the outer disc and install back.

if have done this on my previous ride (turbo engine), result are better.

hope u understand. doesnt have my thermostat pic anymore.

if OFF AC, the fan should spin when temperature rises above normal temp, and stop after temp back to normal. the process goes on and on.

with AC ON, fan start spinning right away until AC achieve its temp set point, and stop, then back ON again when temp rises (its ON together with compressor).

When I'm driving normal speed with AC on all ok.  When stuck in traffic on a hot day with AC on starts to overheat.  I turn off AC and temp climb will stop.  When I'm moving temp will go back down.  Seems to be airflow but fan seems to be working.
Also, once overheat has started and recovered,  turning AC back on will cause heat to climb again, unless I'm moving very fast. smile.gif

looks like ur fan motor is getting weak.
the fan should produce very loud sound when spinning.
try compare ur fan sound with other proton car (preferably with same model or with single fan)

other thing to check if ur head gasket blown or not.

remove the radiator cap, start engine, let it idle until fully warm up.

if u noticed teh tarik bubble at radiator filling point, most probably head gasket blown.

or check dipstick if got water+oil contamination. usually creamy/choc colour.

I got a similar symptom, but only when I drive hard like 160, or something, the aircond felt hot

what car?
maybe ecu cut off AC when running hi-speed / high rpm, to protect compressor?

An update.  I've done a top overhaul on the engine, replaced the thermostat, replaced the radiator hoses with silicon hoses, replaced the radiator+engine pipe (manifold?).  The only thing not replaced is the actual radiator, nor the fan.

The issue still remains.  On a hot day, if I drive fast, I can keep the AC running, but if I stop at a light, temp will go very high and I need to turn the AC off, then temp goes to normal.  On a cold day, everything is fine.  The fan works.

I'm thinking of getting an oil cooler installed.  The Proton workshop people can't figure out why it happens.  Doing a top overhaul btw, really improved my fuel economy!

the cheapest troubleshoot, try sending the radiator for service. might be clogged.
or if u can get other 2nd hand cheap radiator replaced.
other than that, might be the fan motor weak already. try compare side by side with another car.
