An IBM-built computer named Blue Gene/L, deployed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has doubled its performance to 280.6 trillion calculations per second (teraflops). The system is used to study the US nuclear stockpile and perform other research. International Business Machines Corp. built the top three systems on the list released by the Top 500 project, an independent group of university computer scientists who release supercomputer rankings every six months.

I think Folding@Home are crunching more data compared to bluegene. Worldwide computers are contributing to folding.

That'll be good enough to model a person mathematically from birth till death and all the possible consequences he'll face throughout his life like a Clairvoyant, but turns out purely statistical...

If only they link up all the top 10 uber computer to perform prime numbers search, i believe that'll be pretty interesting.

Im imagine one thing...maybe you think is impossible...but i think is impossible...

U see now cpu technology is so fast update, if the fiber optic technology can reach 10GB... i think we no need to buy pc anymore...why? We just need to apply a fiber optic from ISP, then we need a console(for connect to the supercomputer at the ISP), keyboard, mouse , monitor, speaker, thats all...all the cacaluting process handle by the Supercomputer, then send back to our console, u think is it possible???

Sun eyes supercomputing glory
Sun Microsystems on Monday revealed the Constellation System, a high-performance computing platform that company executives claim will vault the company back into the top ranks of supercomputer manufacturers. The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas is currently preparing a Constellation system. If TACC can get enough Barcelona chips from Advanced Micro Devices by Oct. 15, its system will land near the top of the next Top 500 Supercomputers list, Sun says. The TACC system will provide a peak performance of around 500 teraflops, or 500 trillion operations a second. A fully built-out Constellation system, with contemporary components, could hit a peak of 2 petaflops, or 2 quadrillion operations per second.

The supercomputer is only meant for research and a very large project that need computation to be done in less time. Research for example to determine what would happen next to our earth.

wow..nice spec..my spec by the end of this month is :-

Server (2 servers)
4 x Quad core
16 GB RAM
1.5 TB Hard disk space

Clients
2 x Quad Core
8 GB RAM
73 GB hard disk

No San and NAS cause the money is spend to purchase network and rack infrastructure.

It's not as if relative to single/dual core processors. Unless the OS and application can utilise multi-core CPU, then you can see significant difference. Otherwise, the only thing you'll see are 2-3x faster processing, superb loading speed/response and that's all about it.

I'm testing on 2x Quad core processor (2.66GHz) with 24GB RAM and 10x 146GB SAS HDD (RAID-1 config) in Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, with SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. In term of brute force DB processing, I can see significant performance by comparing with an older server running Windows Server 2003 Standard with SQL Server 2000 Standard. A simple DB job now runs <30 minutes, while the older server runs at 2-3 hours.

I use it for MS Word, and it can open in <1 sec, almost instantaneous. But after that, what's the point ?

Military chips are generally not cutting edge superfast stuff. They tend to go for more reliable stuff. Shrinking circuits makes them less reliable.

Agree. Military/Industrial grade equipment are normally not the latest spec. Most of the time, it is one step behind. E.g. most industrial grade PDA equipment are still running PPC2003. Only some are migrated to WM5.0.

And the cooling ? Need how many aircond ?

Electricity bill ? Who is paying ? tongue.gif

What is the utilisation rate or ratio ? You are not going to let it idle for >5 minutes, wasting resources. Run SETI ? tongue.gif

20 years ago, Shell in Holland HQ owned a Cray XMP SuperComputer.

It cost them around 300Mil USD.

Now, I'm not sure where is it already. Probably retired already, Cause it was known to make crazy noices + heat.

Now, The only Craziest computer room that i ever attend will be SSB, Sarawak Shell Berhad.

They have More than 7 chillers, which kept the room below 15c.

The air coming from the floor will easily harden any small fluid.

SSB contains a lot of Dell PowerEdge, HP, IBM X eServer, Hitachi Data System drives and etc.

Wait till you come, and you will see how magnificence this computer room that is.

Every server rack there each blades/server contains 16GB RAM, Intel Xeon 5 Series Quad. (you can imagine how much of computing power in it, consider Shell has more than 80 Rack mounts, each drives is 24TB by the way, using eSATA fibre optics, or just SCSI. More than 1000TB is known to exist there.)

Only the high end workstation uses nVidia Quadro FX5600, around more than 2000 units is using them, with SLi just to do seismic simlulation.

There's even a room dedicated for 3D simulation where you wear the google and go for a crazy 3D simulation.

Overall, if you want to visit a computer room, SSB will be your perfect choice.
