Guys,

I just bought the ZL and I have been using the Galaxy S2 for some time before that. Thus my brief comparison of The ZL is done against the S2 :

1) Sad to say Sony's screen still not as good as Samsung's Amoled. Colors are not punchy and contrast is very low. Somehow, the ZL performs OK with pics and video (perhaps due to Bravia 2 engine) but generally the screen is disappointing.

2) The ZL has a nice form factor and design with good quality materials being used. Nicely engineered. Physical camera button is a plus point.

3) As far as the UI is concerned, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Fortunately one can down load other apps from Play Store to change it some aspects of it.

4) The ZL tends to get very hot when playing games and watching videos.

5) Camera is mediocre - nothing to shout about.

6) Listening to music from the speaker is OK and loud enough.

7) LED notification light available. Use the app Light Flow to configure for missed calls, notifications, low batt warning etc.

8) Speed is good. There is some lag at times but nothing serious.

On the whole, I think Sony still has some distance to go before truly being able to go head to head with Samsung. I hope Sony can improve on the points above with future models.

This is just my humble opinion. Thanks for reading.

Guys,

How do I access the following features which were stated in Sony's Malaysian website ?

http://www.sony.com.my/productcategory/mob-phone

"Xperia smartphones combine stand-out design and superior entertainment technology with the powerful performance consumers would expect from a Sony smartphone. They let consumers play, watch, listen and create all within the world of Sony: via the Sony Entertainment Network Xperia users can watch Hollywood blockbusters on Video Unlimited, play PlayStation-Certified games or stream music from a catalogue of 15 million songs on Music Unlimited"

I don't see any app in there which can access them.

Thanks...

Guys,

I have a question about the battery. Can it be replaced by the service centre and how much it will cost ?

Seems to me that the Bravia Engine only kicks in when viewing photos or videos... Other than that, colors are not so vivid and contrast pretty low.

Guys,

I find my ZL getting really hot when surfing the web with Chrome. This does not happen with Opera or Dolphin browsers though.

stock browser is always a good choice, smooth and fast .

I agree that Chrome is great and like it's ability to synch with other devices but it gets the phone annoyingly hot after a while and uncomfortable to hold.

WTA, how's the white balance screen adjuster on the ZL? does it change the contrast level and color saturation on the ZL?
*
Yes, this feature not available on the Z.

There are 2 display settings (for white balance) to toggle with - saturation and hue. It helps a little with the contrast level but not color saturation.

Adjusting the hue just makes the screen warmer (yellowish) or cooler (bluish). Attached is a screen shot of this setting. Although the first setting is called Saturation, I find it adjust the contrast instead.

Had a meeting today with a bunch of designers from France,  had my xz on the table and they were surprised to see how beautiful and sleek the xz is.. They said they are going to switch from their iPhone after the meeting!

For all my misgivings about the features and functionality of the Xperia Z and ZL, I must say that Sony did a good job in making these 2 models look really beautiful with subtle elements which are pleasing to the eye. They know how to make good use of premium material to bring out the aesthetics of the phone.

Apart from that, they still have lots to improve upon before catching with the rest of the big boys.
