Actually do not follow blindly what banker said.
Also if one want to put in AUD FD, means one is looking for long term, near term movement is not that important.

Generally, I do not advise people to put foreign FD for
1. Discrepancy of exchange, aka try to buy low, sell high as exchange rate spread can "eat" most of the profit can be made, unless through DCI, which is another front/different story.
2. Chase after yield discrepancy, as exchange rate spread can be more costly than the yield difference.

The primary objective of putting foreign FD is to diversify, to hedge against RM depreciation. (yes, you can 'lose" if RM appreciate, this is the price to pay).

We do not know when the trend reserve, normally whenever bulk of bankers told it is bearish or bullish time, normally it is "too late".
Just like very few people/banker made a call when AUD was 0.60 (vs USD time), as well as make big buy call when DJ was 7000 time. But we see lot of buy call or bullish view currently with DJ is 15k...
Same with gold, little made sell call when gold hit USD1900 time.

No offence to any bankers, to be fair, there are some good bankers, and some good call made by bankers as well.
Not every banker is the same.

Received called from Hong Leong bank saying there is a FD promotion 5.25% per year. The staff wanted to make appointment to explain to me. I asked her is this 5.25% a pure FD and not reuired to buy any structured products or unit trust etc..she said is pure FD. I told her email to me the detail first begore meeting up...no news thereafter...anyone of you aware of this FD promo?

Mach FD 4%
The interest you earn they will put inside to your debit card. You cannot cash out, you have to use the card to shop, to spend. You cannot earn compound interest, no snowballing.

The interest they gave you, in the end will take back 1% to 2% from merchants.

After the telemarketing explained to me, I throw back some simple questions to him back. He kept quiet. I asked them back. Who is the winner?
Customer? Merchant or Hong Leong bank?

Ah...!! You probably missed out our discussions about MACH FD in the earlier pages where fund in the MACH SA can be GIRO out to any bank account at the cost of 10sen per transaction up to the limit of rm10k per day.
From now on, you don't have to 'spend' your money in order to 'cash out' fund from 'debit card'.
By the way, HLB actually don't credit the FD interest into your debit card, instead, they credit the interest to your MACH SA in which a debit card linked to this SA was issued to you.

The max monthly interest you can earn from MACH FD 4% promo is approx Rm833.33 due to the max deposit cap of rm250k. So if you wish to maximize the compounding interest, rm833 is sufficient enough to make a FD placement.

You win, merchant win and HLB also win.  biggrin.gif

just take 3.20% pa. approx, you get paid 3.20%/12 or 0.2667% per month.
compound that over 12 months, u get 3.247% or say 3.25%.
that comes nowhere close to 3.5-3.7% offered by most banks for 12mths.
the difference is the premium u lose by keeping the flexibility on 1 month maturity.

Thanks for sharing.
From what I can see is Affin bank offered the best balance. 3.6% for 12 months, PIDM protection and you can put in minimum RM500/cert. Which means if you are free enough you can place a FD for each calendar date.

You can place the FD online. Money has it's own meaning when it can flow like cash, so this is part of the trick.
Or else just dump in RM10K/cert or RM250K/cert.
