Yes. So that you have the flexible timing to withdraw your first FD together with your first Smart Savers.

If you use one Smart Savers with 2 FDs (2 different FD placing dates), all your funds in one Smart Savers will "stuck" together
until the first day of the 3rd or fourth month.
*
You're so lucky they actually allowed that! thumbup.gif To me, this is still the best offer (minus the unflexible withdrawal and getting 'stuck' issue), so this is great.

Just noticed MBSB has a FD promotion at 4.2% (80% of fund) for 9 months tenure, but 20% of fund needs to put into Saving account:

MBSB saving account interest rates:

I just realised I never knew about MBSB till now, lol...what is it actually? Looks like a bank, but not a bank? And I'm guessing no PIDM protection, yes?
The rate's pretty good.

Anything bank that gives beyond 4.5% makes me go hmm.gif because I know it's most of the time it's not effective rate.
That's why I get pissed off at those banks which flash over their bloody promos things like 6%! 8%! because it's obviously ain't true vmad.gif

MBSB is not a bank, but they operate very similar to a bank.
MBSB FD is not under PIDM protection, one of the major share holders is EPF.

In overall, Bank Rakyat's FD rates are better than MBSB.

If comparing to Bank Rakyat, I can feel that MBSB is more focus to target Chinese market.

Thanks! I feel somehow insecured over institutions like this...hehe.

Have you ever approached by OCBC RM to ask you to buy their investment products?

Recently they have a RMB (China currency) forex investment plan, minimum investment is
RM 70K, projected return is either 7% or no return at all, but the capital is guarantee secured.

And 1/3 of fund can put into FD to enjoy 4.00% (if I am not mistaken at this rate) for one year.

When I asked for a hard copy to study at home, the RM said no.  doh.gif

What do you think of this product?

Sorry, off topic here...
*
Heya! You're in luck...I was approached to do it on the same product. You can see my topic here: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2805052&hl=
But I didn't have many replies on this, so don't think it's gonna be helpful much to you.
To answer you in advance, no, I didn't go ahead with it. Simply because I don't really understand how it works, lol...so no fun feeling uncomfortable with it.

Captain, recently I only place FD in UOB and OCBC (especially to target for OCBC 4.5% FD + Smart Savers),
so I have to use other bank's current account that have "weak" FD promo and convenience location just like Public Bank.

I have only Premier account from OCBC, but I think my status will be terminated soon after buying a car.  sad.gif

Thanks for the info..  smile.gif
*
BoomChaCha, if you're a Premier customer already, why didn't you go for the 5.5% FD promo? It ends this 30th June. I know the requirement is to have a few investment products with the bank, but I think since you've already got some FDs, all you need is to do some other investment with them. But of course, the downside is if you can't find a product that suits you, then no point thinking about it.

QUOTE(Gen-X @ Jun 4 2013, 10:08 PM)
Bro, unlike SCB and HSBC, OCBC no penalty if your AUM falls below the required amount when getting the Premier Banking status. So your OCBC Premier status is for life.
*
Gen-X, I was told that the status for Premier with OCBC will be gone I think after a year (I can't remember if it stays active by yearly or not) if your AUM drops below 300k. Or depending on the bank, some may call you if you drop below in less than that period. So maybe during that time, you can still negotiate to have it maintain, but based on discretion.

So no, it's not for life. Unless I've been wrongly advised.

I guess most probably you are right and I am wrong. Anyway, seriously, OCBC Premier Banking is useless. There are so many PB customers where it takes like forever for my turn (unless I go early in the morning and wait for them to start work). Usually I go to the general banking hall - it's faster for my case (UOB and HLB too). And OCBC has no Premium credit card for PB members.

Anyway, the reason most commercial banks have PB is not for people like us here who are only interested in FD BUT to sell the banks' investment products.

The RM assign to us are mostly commission base and they earn more if they can push the banks products. Not to say deposit are not important to our RM (some do have quota too), but the real income for them is selling investment products. So in reality, those of us here who are only into FD sometimes complain that our RM(s) are not providing the service we expect whereas actual fact the RM(s) are sales personnel.

So for people who are into FD, PB status not important, but the interest rate is  biggrin.gif
*
Yeah, that's what I feel too. They will always sell you products so they can make money and whether it's to our benefit or not, I mostly will doubt them anyway, lol...

So far I haven't really gotten the chance to compare the difference between the physical environment for Premier and non ones, but I don't think there's much difference. I personally don't fancy being a Premier customer or not for a bank because to me, I don't really need that kind of specialty. Unless there's a promo/extra interest that I can get from it, haha smile.gif

QUOTE(BoomChaCha @ Jun 5 2013, 12:26 AM)
To get this 5.5% FD promo, I have to buy an investment product which I am not interested.

Secondly, the RM is not willing to give me any investment information to study.
And his approach cannot convince me to buy their investment products.

Thirdly, I do not trust this RM.

Lastly, I do not have any more extra money.

So I cannot go for it.
*
Yeah, for me it's the same thing too. RM is important...some just turns me off completely.

QUOTE(BoomChaCha @ Jun 5 2013, 12:34 AM)
Understood.

I have learned a lot from Captain.  notworthy.gif

Usually when I walk in to OCBC Premier Room, I just go to the receptionist
counter to ask for help for my banking matters.

If we are not interested in bank's investment products but only FD, then no point for us to walk in to
Premier room to avoid embarrassment with the RM.. agree?  hmm.gif
*
I felt the same since I focus only on FD and I think the person managing me must be shaking her head when she sees me, lol

Anyway, 5.5% for a FD promo is really good compared with all the banks out there under this special circumstances.

Ha.. ha.. As what Captain mentioned. They are sales personnel.
At first I was not aware they were sales personnel.

I do not need the privilege title of Premier either, I just need a high profit rate.
This is what I think:

Good things in the Premier Room and being a Premier customer:
(1) Get faster and usually a bit more polite service
(2) More comfort physical environment with more comfortable sofa, CNN news on big screen LCD/LED TV, usually served with coffee,
      tea, and newspaper.
(3) Free, convenient, and reserved parking (depending on the branch location)

Bad thing in the Premier Room:
(1) Feel tense to meet RM if do not buy investment product. Luckily they provide newspaper so I can use it to cover my face to avoid eye contacts.
(2) Lock myself in a small room and cannot see anything outside in the regular hall.
Last year OCBC offered 5% but without buying investment product, only buy deposit products instead.
*
Lol, you're so funny. Yeah, sometimes when I feel tense, what I do is to always say in between the lines "I don't have that much money one, you know?" when the RM or wealth manager tries too hard. But the one I got so far is okay. I'm going to have another new guy handling my account soon and apparently he's quite gungho in his style. If he tries to get me to invest too much, I'll just revert to the previous lady.

And dang, they gave 5% back then? Then they should give 6% since now it includes investment products, lol *greedy*

Kuwait Finance House: 3.88%
Bank Rakyat: 3.75%

Standard & Chartered: 3.5%, 3.7% or 3.9% (Look like a complicated & troublesome procedure for new sign-up)

http://www.standardchartered.com.my/person...ndle/index.html
*
Yeah, I always disliked SC FD promo because they like to tie in with CC and/or current accounts and/or savings accounts (who'd actually go through such troubles unless they needed a CC or those accounts??). Makes me think they're so not sincere in giving the rate by making it so complicated. Same goes for CIMB, PB, etc. Worse thing is, even if you go through the troubles, you still earn not much compare with other good banks. That's why to me OCBC is still the best one so far.

Thank for the update bro. For OCBC Combo plan, best to deposit early or end of the month in order to ensure that we earn the best possible effective interest rate. I have use the image you posted above in my blog(s) and should you disagree with it, please let me know and I shall remove it immediately.

As for RMs, well, they do have target to meet with other investment products and there are not there to serve us but employed to make more money for the banks, haha.

The earliest of the month.

This depends on Standard & Chartered promotion plan.

During the last quarter of last year, Standard & Chartered bank offered a very good rate at 5% for 3 months,
some of our Musical Chair members here made good money from this deal at that time.

In addition to this FD promo at 5.00 rate, Standard & Chartered also offered free Phillip 42" LCD TV if deposit minimum RM 1 million,
the RM told me under his account, he got 4 customers qualified for 42" LCD TV (excluding me).
The best rate I have ever enjoyed was from Citibank at 5.85% rate for 3 months during last year I think in April.  biggrin.gif
*
Dang...where was I last year when all these high rates took place! tongue.gif

Imagine, at a million, 5% gets you more than RM12k in that 3 months. Best return without risking any loss.

My wealth manager/advisor knows I'm more interested in FD promos, but still tries her luck in convincing me into other investments. Sometimes I don't mind because we do need to diversify. I do consider (spend time listening to her) in some of the products because it's like a 'taster' to me before I venture 'outside' without depending on the bank, lol...

Ha.. ha..  biggrin.gif  This is what I was trying to say:

If you listen to your RM about the investment plan, the RM will expect you to buy from them;
if you do not buy from them, the RM will be disappointed, and embarrassing moment will happen
(I personally will have this kind of feeling).

So, perhaps I will just follow Captain Gen-X Straight forward method to skip this hassle and embarrassment:
"When ever I sign up for PB, on the very first day itself I will tell my RM I only interested in FD Promo rates."
*
Yeah, agree. If you saw my other post earlier, my strategy is to tell them "Do you think I have that much money?" tongue.gif
And surprisingly, she'd just slow down and stop after that, haha rclxms.gif

Btw, it's June. So far still haven't seen any new promotional rates anywhere. Hmm...

They have yet explained to me about smart saver, i feels unsecure because they like selling insurance to me, i have to put aside RM17,220 every year and accumulate till 8 years only can withdraw the fund, but i get RM2,400 interest return + RM3000 bonus (fluctuate according economic) every year and i get insured up to RM60,000, while you can enjoy saving account with 4.5% rate untill end of this year and afterward will follow normal fd rate..
*
You're getting FD and the Great Eastern plan that they are selling to you mixed up. The one you just said is an insurance + savings plan.
We're talking about FD promo here which is the 4.5% Smart Savers combo. Two very different things.

Usually OCBC will have a gift for new premier customer.

What kind of gift will OCBC offer is depending on their marketing campaign.
They used to offer free RM 100 Parkson voucher (Captain received a lot  biggrin.gif )
and gold art.

I suggest you to call OCBC hotlines first to confirm if they have any special
gift offer for new premier customer:
http://www.ocbc.com.my/group/group-home.html

Then you call RM to discuss about new premier sign-up, then before you hang-up,
you ask nicely in a soft tone: do you have any gift for me? Hopefully the RM will
give you extra gifts.  biggrin.gif

Remember one of the Musical Chair's Golden Rules created by Captain:
Always negotiate for better FD rate and gift on the phone first before you go to bank to open new FD account.  biggrin.gif
*
Lol, yes...I'm a sucker for gifts!
And I think I'll do just what you said...will call first (and sound hesitant abit tongue.gif) before I take on the next step.

I checked and their current promotion now is a luggage bag, lol... a small one. I wanted to ask if there's any other gifts or anything to exchange, but she said only this. Too bad no fancy coffee makers tongue.gif So, luggage bag better than nothing la.

PS: How did Captain receive alot of those vouchers back then if it's given to one-time new Premier customer? Just curious, keke...

The only exception is Bank Rakyat which the members here  are comparing and competing to get more gifts biggrin.gif
