Is tax season again...

Anyone here has any experience with Malaysian tax under 'bukan Permastautin' (MY non-resident) and with Malaysia-Singapore double taxation treaty ?

Scenario where 2012 Malaysian salary will be tax 26% without 'pelepasan' due to > 60days < 183 days in Malaysia.

If my reading/ understanding is correct, one can be a Malaysian tax resident even if > 60days < 183 days in Malaysia (ie SG tax resident) ?

I don't think my scenario is exactly the same as yours, but when I came over to SG, I had worked in MY for only 4 months i.e. ~120 days. Under MY tax rules I am still considered as a "Tax Resident" for that year (despite being less than 182 days) because under dunno what section 7 it was linked to > 182 days in the preceding year.

This is what I found

http://www.hasil.gov.my/pdf/pdfam/3656.pdf

Seems to be correct for our cases (less than 182 days). Also applicable for anyone who is a tax resident for 3 years in a row (if I read / understand correctly) ~ legal jargon rclxub.gif

Since you talk abit about tax, can i know if i have an insurance in SG, do i need to declare it? what is the benefit for declaring it?just fill up how much i already paid until present?
*
Speaking of insurance, if your Malaysian life insurance company has an office in SG, you can also claim that. I think is using the conversion rate listed in IRAS. Since some are not PR, that is the only other deductible since we don't contribute to CPF.

Any one have any experience with that ? Mine is Prudential Malaysia.

KL is the old KL station, I think it just pass through, only KTM Komuter / ETS stop there.

This Friday 23/03/2013 all sold out, next Friday selling fast (for beds), kerusi still quite a lot.

Haven't tried using train before from SG, thinking of trying it next month as I will be going to Ipoh. Take the night train (bed) from JB sentral, reach KL sentral around 6.30am+, catch ETS to Ipoh around 8am .... Reach Ipoh around 10am. Looks like there is a discount card for 25% for RM20 a year (KTM Tiger card)

anyone with experience to share ?

Nego?
Before I even see the unit (that means when i called the agent), the agent already told me point blank to bring my cheque along and if ngam already pay deposit. He said don't waste his time if I want to see-see only. I haven't even mentioned nego yet. I think if i say nego, he straight away slam down the phone. And surprisingly many agents also said the same thing.
*
Didn't know the market is so hot right now. Or the place you seeking in demand ? smile.gif

Negotiation normally is aircon usage, kitchen usage, washine machine usage, etc... I got $50 off (no aircon).

That agent sound damn arrogant, are they all like this?? Bcs I would like to see the place first like see room mate are ok people & it's a clean place. Is it going to agent the easiest way or are there better alternative?

Mostly when renting room from owner, the utilities are included, or sharing between a group. ASK if you are not sure. Some are quite fussy about how many times a week you can use the washing machine, aircon hours, etc. Electricity might be expensive I think smile.gif

Also ask what time the owner/ other tenants working hours - You don't want to have a massive traffic jam to the toilet if your working hours all start the same time laugh.gif

Just for your info to compare, a friend is renting master room HDB in Tiong Bahru for $1500 (inclusive of utilities). It depends on your location and sometimes luck as well.

Good luck.

Wow... that's a LOTTTT of hassle...

You're essentially doing:

SG-JB - public transport, taxi
JB-KL - KTM
KL-Ipoh - ETS

You basically have to 3 departure times to catch (ie. 3 opportunities to be late) and 2 change overs (ie. 2 opportunities to run like hell between departure gates).

You can easily just take the express bus from Golden Mile direct to Ipoh.
*
where is the adventure in that? tongue.gif hehehe

I will be booking the JB-> KL and KL -> SG KTM ticket though.

After work Friday, take a bus from SG to JB CIQ (train leaves at 23:55, leaving around 9 to 10PM from SG should OK I guess for woodlands jam + customs, need to do a test run one of these days during JB weekend getaway). With time to spare, just lazy around in JB sentral (looks nice like KL sentral from the pics with 24 hours fast food shop - KFC i think)

As for the KL-> Ipoh, Ipoh-> KL ETS part, I will just buy the tickets at the counter at KL Sentral. The ETS trains runs quite frequent and should be able to get a ticket (no public holidays or school cuti so should be safe), worst case LRT to puduraya to get a bus ticket.

The thing I don't like with flight or buses going north is you reach your destination in the middle of the night without any connecting transportation available except taxi or someone to pick you up.

Hmmm... I guess you've never experienced missing a connecting leg before... can totally screw up all your plans.

Anyway, good luck. You'll need it.
*
I miss my share of flights before, so I know the feeling cry.gif . You just need to know what are your options available at that time and backup plans if any. No point arguing with the check-in counter staff, etc. and waste more time smile.gif

Anyway I don't need to reach Ipoh at a specific time, so I got some time to work around. This actually looks like a viable solution since KL sentral becomes more of a hub to connect to KLIA, KTM, LRT with the midnight train from SG to KL sentral. I post my experience if I manage to do it next month cool2.gif

Guys, quick question to help me do some sums.

How much would you be willing to pay for a common room in a condo (normal facilities, gym and pool etc) that is 2-3 minutes walk from MRT (from MRT platform to condo guardhouse) and across the road from shopping mall?

Basic furnishing ie. queen bed, built in wardrobe, air conditioning and the common bathroom practically for the your use only?

Include utilities (say $200), very light cooking only (instant noodles, rice or porridge) and no overnight or "lounging" (ie. hang out the whole afternoon etc) visitors.

Nearby condos are renting out at $4-4.5K. But they are about 7-10 minutes walk from MRT.
*
I would think $1500++ but honestly I would not pay that high because I am kedekut biggrin.gif

One thing to note that this is a common room, so I guess there will be some other people (owner, other tenants) in the condo ? A colleague of mine is renting a condo near Novena MRT (1 bedroom studio) for around $3000 so he get the whole unit for himself.

Since you mention that someone is renting out $4000 to $4500 for a common room ( sweat.gif ), you could try within that range and see if there is anyone biting. Good luck.

Your aunt will never be consider a true blue Singaporean. At best a FT Singaporean like some sport players. Even you aunt win a gold medal, many local will think she is still not Singaporen enough.

PR pay more to the gov for less subsidy and zero benefits when there is any bonus. These Sinagporean should be thankful to PR for not diluting their bonus share. If Sinagporean alone are capable to fill up all the demanding jobs here then there is no reason why the Gov NEED to bring in the FT since long time ago. So don't bother these anti FT talks.

PR don't buy HDB with gov subsidy. They only help Singaporean to be richer by buying their HDB at higher markup price. They should blame their ex minister for linking the new HDB price with resale price which make the new HBD unaffordable to young Sinagporean.

Why would one pay $140+ for a bag which is not even leather ? rclxub.gif

Maybe I won't understand .. hahahaha.

If you feel your aunty nagging, you can opt to rent outside, which will cost you a little more ( I am assuming you are staying with her). The extra money will buy you more sanity as you seems to be very affected by your aunty's comments.

ETFs and REITs listed on the SGX are a much better alternative compared to unit trusts. The management fees are much lower, and because they are listed, they are much more transparent & liquid and the transaction fees/commissions are also lower. Unless there's a very specific exposure you're looking for, there's really no good reason to go with unit trusts just to earn a reasonably stable higher return.

Can also consider bank bonds listed on SGX like the Big 3 banks' fixed dividend notes. For example OCBC's 5.1% $100 notes pay $5.10 per year (actually $2.55 every 6 months, so the effective return is slightly higher due to compounding).

You can also take advantage of NTUC fixed income guaranteed capital policies but those only pay 1.4% per annum ie. about 0.5% more than bank FD rates. But quite safe and a viable option if you like the security of FDs.
*
Looks interesting....

How do one get into ETF, bank bonds or the NTUC fixed income thingy ? Need to register with SGX (like CDS in Malaysia ?) and put a minimum sum or something before you can invest ?

Explain that annual leave is an EARNED entitlement.

By working to the end of your contract, you have earned all your annual leave. It has therefore become ENTITLED to you.

There are only 2 possible ways for you to RECEIVE your entitlement.

1. You utilise the leave ON OR BEFORE the coming Friday, OR

2. The company pays you in lieu on Friday.

Please ask your boss to state his decision ie. (1) or (2). Cc HR and your second level boss when you send this email to your boss.
*
I concur with what seantang said and this is normal during resignation or end of contract. This also applies if you have taken more leave then your earned leave etc (in which you work extend your last day or pay in lieu).

My concern is more towards the EP or WP pass ( I am assuming you are using a pass).
Is the pass expiry day the same as the last day of the contract ? normally companies can renew the pass a few weeks before the pass expiry, and if the pass expires you will need to exit SG within 30 days.

Since you mention you have found another job (I assume in SG as well), the new company will renew your pass and cancel your current pass (if is still valid), since each WP or EP is tied to 1 company.

In summary, if you don't get a pass on time for the new job you, etc. will need to exit SG (without a pass you cannot legally work in SG) within 30 days.

For my case, my EP expired (when I return to SG, I exit before the expiry) I am using white card with 30 days. Also check if the company will withhold your salary for the last month for tax clearance.

Kena retrench is always not a good reason for leaving. If you tell the interviewer this! Of coz, they will hv very bad impression toward you!... 1st on their mind would be this candidate cannot perform well in previous company that's why d company retrench you. Ur mark will from 100% become 40%!... Specially, HR personnels don't like to hear like reason. Surely, the interviewer will ask you "There are so many staffs in d company, why they choose to retrench you and not others?" How do you answer this question? They will add-on : Usually, company or superior will choose to retrench those who cannot perform well in their jobs or those don't hv close relationship with colleagues, superiors, internal and external parties! There are so many reasons can use. Don't try to mention "retrench" during interview session!... Coz it is quite "sensitive word" for the interviewers!... If u really want to use it. U might need to prepare more tough answers to reply the interviewers!... Coz they will hv more interest to dig out more about ur previous company management information from you!... Good luck to you....
*
They close down the whole department and relocate to China,India,Vietnam.... (insert country here). tongue.gif

If you kena retrenched, sometimes the company will write a letter of recommendation for you, or you ask them to give you one. Some even better companies will help you look/ intro for a new job.
