Hello, wish to share my experience working in SG so far to help others like what my seniors did. Second generation PR but spent most of my time in Malaysia until A-level. Studied here for four years and working in bank, still prefer the lifestyle in Malaysia

QUOTE(Dark NT @ Apr 2 2013, 10:09 PM) Hi Guys, any advice or sharing on this would be appreciated. My sis-in-law stayed in SG with visit pass for half a year with my brother before they got married. They went back almost every week because both our parents in Malaysia. No problem when entering SG. I also heard about the 60 days out of 90 days period.I recently got my PR application approved, for me and my family (wife and kids). Now my mom in law (MIL) is currently staying with us in SG under a dependant pass (tied to an employement pass) helping to take care of the kids. I called ICA today and enquired what will happen to the Dependant pass holder once I complete the PR formalities (it's actually not very clear on both ICA and MOM website). I was told that the Dependant pass shall be cancelled through MOM (via Company of the employment pass holder, or the EP holder herself). Once the dependant pass is cancelled, a short term visit pass shall be issued for 30 days, which means the Dependant can continue to stay in SG for 30 days (just like a regular visitor). All these makes sense... However, if my MIL leaves SG within this 30 days (say back to MY for a few days), she might not be able to come back to SG, because a Malaysia passport holder can only stay in SG for a max of 60 days (out of a 90 day period). Unless my MIL applies for a Long term visit pass, which will take 4-6 weeks to process. I plan to apply this immediately after we get our PR IC (or even earlier if possible). But the risk remains - If within 30 days my MIL don't get her Long term visit pass approved for whatever reason, she has to leave SG, and might not be allowed to re-enter SG. And the issue is of course no one to take care of the kids. |

QUOTE(deodorant @ Apr 2 2013, 11:50 PM) Congrats and welcome to the club! PM our daikor MacKiddo to get added to our TCSS and gathering group on whatsapp, or Lester1987 to be added to the FaceBook group. Sorry my bad. Chat with her in the morning she said she on LTVP to accompany my brother.Only applies for people with long term visit pass. Last time my fiancee got LTVP using EP Eligibility Cert so she can stay for 1 year, but before she got the LTVP she also had to comply with the 60-out-of-90 days rule. Immigration very strict one, once you 30 plus days, they will start calculating and giving you less-than-30 days entrance when you come in. |

QUOTE(xtylish @ Apr 3 2013, 11:17 PM) i just got hired. on the spot. My other half started working with 1.8k well below market value and local uni degree. Don't worry what others say. Medical checkup should be no problem. Happy working!tomorrow i will go provide them my passport, ic, white card and my degree cert. funny they want a copy of my spm just to keep a copy? also, i took the job because i don't want to do sales, but the job is so easy, i think all i do is sit in the office blow aircond only. hence, only $1.6k. please guide me what to do next. also very paranoid about the medical report now. scared kena reject. maybe i just think too much. and i assume i will get work permit only, they won't be so nice gimme s pass right? so.. how am i gonna get that PR i find that not having a PR status is rather hard for me to get a decent job. for now i am just gonna rendam myself on this super easy job for maybe 6 months still i start go interviewing again? please advice! |

I still remember his a-levels welcome speech was like you are all our children, i am your father, and the teachers are your uncles and aunties! and don't even get me started on singing "I'M A PRE U MATE, IN A PRE U STATE" to the tune of Barbie Doll Problem is weather mang, either way you will be wet when reach office, either wet from sweat or wet from rain. QUOTE(JohnJon82 @ Apr 4 2013, 11:56 PM) Forgot who is the principal when I in pre-u. Don't remember is him. He was my secondary school principal but I can't remember he having two posts. QUOTE(rexona @ Apr 5 2013, 01:14 AM) That is actually a bit below average liao. Lots of elites in this thread just talk bullsh*t about earning 1.6k la, $900 la, but actually most of them below 30 but already earning huge bucks. Off hand I know in this thread got 1. Elite O&G member who works 12 days a month, raise 2 kids in own HDB and wife can afford to be tai tai, 2. Elite SIA pilot 3. Elite banker at stanchart who pay more tax than fresh grad earn 4. Elite Louis Vutton director who got tons of private property in JB 5. Elite shell contractor who own Panerai and other luxury watches 6. Elite CFO seantang who got multiple private property in Singapore 7. Elite HSBC Relationship Manager with 5 digit monthly salary. Don't be so bad la, deflate or inflate the income until not realistic, misleading for those who sincerely looking for jobs. All elites but #1 in keeping low profile, salute! |

QUOTE(mules @ Apr 5 2013, 11:33 AM) I subcribed that mio tv package.... after few browsing got bored already, can say Astro in Malaysia offered more variety and cheaper. Daily routine after work - cook, doing dishes, house work, TVB drama, reading news, work and emailing before sleep. Mio tv no use one TVB can talk Chinese. Sometime dinner outside, shopping and movie if too tired to cook.So many badminton kaki here, u all must look very good.... I stay at Tampines. Surprisingly, unlike what i read before i came here, people are very friendly here and so many Malaysian... Maybe i should start by jogging, somewhere down the road like half year + can start learning how to swing the badminton racquet. Reading is a good choice i guess cause after conversion the books cost around the same here from Malaysia. Weekends do some jogging or swimming, dinner and drink with friends if don't go back home. Many locals very nice one, one of my neighbours always invite us to her place during festival. Some are just so mean we gang up together to ignore them. |

QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 5 2013, 04:40 PM) In Singapore, you need a degree + ACCA, if you want to extract value from the ACCA. Not fair loh, ACCA professional papers is sooooo much harder than a degree 4 years of study combined. Almost want to faint when I got my first results. ACCA and degree should be together right? Some modules overlap each other. Never see ACCA without a degree. Most of the time degree holder trying to get ACCA.If you have ACCA alone, many companies will only hire you at diploma or technical level pay scale. You get less than someone holding a degree alone. As far as I can tell, only the accounting firms will confirm hire you into their graduate pay scale if you have ACCA but no degree. My US MNC employer for instance, will not. |

QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 5 2013, 06:11 PM) That's where the issue is actually. Bsc in accounting from brookes 9 fundamentals paper and a research paper. Ya most of the ACCA people will have it so very rare ACCA don't have a degree. CPA SG requires degree + ACCA + few more exams and working experiences. Stop after ACCA too busy at work and dramas lol. 200 pounds per year for nothing. Find a rich husband can liao no more study for me.Many companies, and to my knowledge esp. the US ones - differentiate between an education (ie. degree etc) and a professional membership like ACCA, CA, CPA etc. You lose that membership if you don't pay your fees. They don't consider these memberships equivalent to education. Most accounting professional memberships require you to have an accounting degree before you can commence the program. Not so with ACCA and perhaps some old school apprenticeships with CA, MICPA. I heard ACCA has partnered Oxford Brookes to print degrees for ACCA candidates. |

QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 5 2013, 11:16 PM) Basically any recognised professional qualification will do. Or straightaway take the ICPAS professional exam if you have a degree. If you have an appropriate Singaporean degree, don't even have to sit for any more exams. I got the BBA but only BBA in accounting is recognised for ICPAS associate registration. Never wanted to be a CPA from the start, took ACCA to accompany my friend because she wants to become a CPA. After ACCA she become ICPAS associate. After ICPAS assoc still need to sit for few exams to get her CPA. QUOTE(conqu3ror @ Apr 5 2013, 11:28 PM) Yes, if you passed ACCA, Degree and Master Degree is just piece of cake. ACCA in SG only equvalent to BBA accounting. Having either only can get you ICPAS assoc, still long way from CPA where the money is.Simple thing, if the employer under value ACCA, then please go to other company which value it. If a degree so important in SG, then better persue Master Degree you will have advantage then others, forget about the basis Degree. ACCA is world recognise professional body in Accounting, and one of the toughest exam. If you think Oxford Brookes Degree just by paying money, I hope you can attempt to do the Research Project and glad you won't fail it. Degree = hard to get it, but easy to get out ACCA/CIMA/ICAEW = easy to get it, but super hard to get out |

QUOTE(ThanatosSwiftfire @ Apr 6 2013, 01:26 PM) Fiona/conqueror go somewhere else if u want to talk abt acca. Im an acca holder and worldprizewinner and I dont think acca is all that great. Youve been brainwashed by all those propaganda ur college and acca has been feeding u. There is always a bigger and better qualification /education elsewhere. Deal with it. Hello, which sentence you interpret that I am brainwashed? My first degree enough to land me my current job. Taking ACCA is like a step backward for me. For some they need it for their registration. For me just a value add. I just saying it seems strange for ACCA holder doesn't have a degree. World prize winner or not so? |

QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 6 2013, 04:20 PM) I've held 2 professional accounting qualifications for over 10 years. Never ever actually 'used' them before... as I've never actually signed an audit report, accountant's report or anything else that requires a qualified accountant to sign... (apart from signing the 3 year work experience testimonials for colleagues who want to get their professional qualifications). Ah! My company never pay for my ACCA membership... Doubt that my boss even know I pass the exams. Want the CPA title for shutting my other half's mouth up. Keep teasing me after he got his practicing license. Don't want to bear the responsibility of signing anything in my life. Not a career minded person just want to be a housewife after he is stable with his career hehe.Every year, just buta-buta pay a thousand bucks of membership fees... luckily the company pays. After you have 5-10 years of experience, your next job depends on the quality of that job experience. If you were in a major MNC managing the finances of a billion dollar business, then that's your headline. Whether you have or don't have a CA, ACCA or CPA is of no consequence. You no longer need a professional qualification to prove that you know how to run a business, a finance process or a finance dept. Even if you never had a CA, ACCA or CPA, the prospective employer is not going to overlook you in favour of some small time "CFO" of a small family owned business because he has CA+ACCA+CPA. Of course if you're competing against someone who has the same work experience as you but has professional qualifications as well... then you're a little bit disadvantaged on a resume impact basis. But there are also personality and personal effectiveness factors (like charisma and rapport) that will easily tip the balance back to your side. Of course... if the other chap is also super personable... you're screwed. That's why there's always NO downside to getting more qualifications into your resume (academic, professional or leadership)... if you can afford the time and money So... a professional qualification is good when you are just starting out and you have no experience. It differentiates you from someone who doesn't have one. But once you have a certain level of experience, it's mainly your experience that gets you the next job. Just hope you're not so unlucky to meet your black star competitor who is on par with you in all fields of experience and personal effectiveness... but on top of that, paid more attention than you did on collecting qualifications for his/her resume. QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 6 2013, 07:03 PM) I mainly use UOB One Visa. Because the minimum spend is very manageable and the rewards are straight up cash offset against the bill each quarter. Not points or air miles. UOB One offers the best cash rebate for consistent spending. Never belief in those redemption point system except for Krisflyer. Cash is the best. The Manhattan Johnjon said offer the highest cash rebate on any purchase but the minimum amount for the 5% is a turn off. Good for big sum shopping like house appliances and bags They recently made it probably the best card to use overseas for relatively low spenders... //forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2721753&view=findpost&p=59346864 Other "specialised" card Maybank for petrol and NTUC Fairprice HSBC for Giant Citi for dinning Just apply all of them and manage accordingly. Worth the trouble. QUOTE(seantang @ Apr 6 2013, 08:26 PM) Occurs more often than you might think... //forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2764432&view=findpost&p=59490084 They don't know about the Oxford Brookes degree? I just anyhow got it since only one extra module during the ACCA. |
