Any thought on that general location? I'm honestly hoping to get a place with no owners and that they allow cooking. Looking at the 600 - 1k price range i dont mind paying abit more for comfort.

*
I am not sure your reason for wanting a place that allows you to cook. In Sg, food at food courts is reasonably priced and choices are plenty. Having a stove to cook instant noodles and a microwave oven to heat up food should be sufficient. Cooking for a single person or two persons is not that easy, when the amount you cook will most likely be more than one meal.

I did cook when I was based in Jakarta but not in Sg, as I didn't really like their run of the mill street or restaurant food and that is only at most twice a week....each cooking session can last me for 3 meals! biggrin.gif One thing about cooking on your own is that you need to consider the time to prepare and cook. So if your work hours are long, you may not want to cook.

And I have no fancy investment strategy. I have no time or energy to monitor and analyse. I invest and forget... so I just invest in shares in sectors I naturally understand well ie. 嫖賭飲吹. I basically bought one lot of Genting, BToto, Guinness, Carlsberg, BAT, JT every month or so (sublots for BAT) and increased the number of shares as salary got higher. All of them pay a high dividend, and have cash rich, unchanging/addictive long term demand, low fluctuation, low risk business models. Don't have to monitor , just collect the dividend cheques. Later on, I added on telcos as a sector because it has very much the same dynamics and I happen to be very interested in this field.

So no need to look so much at share price, just makan dividends for gambling and beer stocks? hmm.gif

Got to time it a bit also lah. Beer stocks have run up so much in the last decade that it's not funny anymore. I collected all my beer stocks in the 1990s and 2000s. Since then, I've stopped adding beer shares because the PE ratios are so high. Gambling can still do, but as an industry, it's going nowhere so capital gains are limited if you only start to enter now. Tobacco shares despite all the negative propaganda are still very good dividend payers, but like gambling, will just stay put. So the last 4 or 5 years, I've switched to telcos. The star is obviously Digi. If you bought at RM11, 12, 13 just a few short years back, you'd be laughing to the bank now. It's like up 400%. In Singapore, it's Starhub. If you bought at $1.50-2.00 in 2009/2010 or even at $3 not to long ago, now it's $4.50. I'm accumulating Maxis and M1 over the last year or so because they have the same fundamentals but are laggards. Their time will come.

Also wait for recessions. People who were contrarian and bought during 2008/2009 - windfall, man. To have cash during recession is like... in the land of the blind, the sighted man is king. Buy virtually anything during that time (property, shares, whatever), you'd be laughing now. That's the power of a cash hoard.

Thanks for the insights guys, i'm a cooking kinda guy as when i lived in AUS i did alot of cooking it was just my way of life i don't think constant hawker food is healthy

I agree with the living like a foreign labor part, i'm coming here to SG for experience as well as to enjoy my life and coming home to a nice place at least is the bare minimum i need. So long as my room/toilet is clean i dont really mind the other area's of the place.

I've contacted a few agents fingers crossed i can get a condo at aljunid for 850.

I came up with a rough budget with my salary feed back would be great.

Rent/pub- $800-1k

Phone-$50

Transport -$60

food $20 p/day -$600 my thoughts here are i can eat fancy sometimes but just don't spend to much on other days to accommodate for the day i do spend a bit more on a meal out

leisure (activities/gym/shopping/etc):$400

Savings:$1k

Thoughts? I plan for it to be like that generally and adjust as i live and see how much i would spend

erm..any reason why do u insist on paying premium for condo?
since u say u just need a bare minimum, why condo when in a hdb, u also get a room and a toilet?

not sure if using prepaid to call back will be a better option for u or not.
for example, starhub prepaid green 28 only cost u $28 and gives u $100 local calls + $28 international call credit and lasts for 50 days
dialling the 018 to penang is charged under local calls.
but there is the hassle of holding 2 phones laugh.gif laugh.gif

For me I've taken AA, Tiger and Jetstar to KL multiple times in the past, so far touch wood all 3 also decent. But a lot of our members here dunno why very anti Tiger and won't choose to fly it at all.

How can compare yourself to me? I am low paid nobody in the bank with no access to any information of value, so they don't care whether I can buy or cannot buy. Elite asset managers of course naturally are different and will have all sorts of restrictions to prevent insider trading mah.

You might get 1 common room, but definitely not the whole condo.

That's 2 train or bus trips a day. What if you want to go home to Malaysia, go dating, go function etc?

Let's say you spend $50 one day (eg. whack some sushi or you buy dinner for someone)... you'll need spend only $10 a day for the next 3 days... pretty unlikely unless you don't mind those one vege, one meat chap fan etc all the time. I would budget $1000 for food.
