I know how to play the guitar but never tried the ukulele before, is it somewhat similar? smile.gif

Yeah pretty much. If you played guitar before it should be easier for you to pick ukulele up. I myself came from guitar as well, took only a couple days to get Soul Sister right =D Some difference uke vs the guitar is
4 strings vs 6 strings
Lesser frets compared to guitar depending on uke size
Most chords is easier but selective barring is common
Portable, easier for travel.
Less bass and sustaining sound, expected due to smaller soundbox

Glad to have you aboard. Honestly I've yet to encounter a good place for ukulele lessons. I've attended a few workshops but most of their teachings is aimed at those who are absolute beginners and have no experience at stringed instruments.

Your best bet for now is to find a personal trainer, or learn off youtube ( which is what I'm doing ). This channel is usually where I do practices and look for inspiration. http://www.youtube.com/user/ukuleleunderground

Found a workshop this coming Sunday.

Cordoba makes good guitars, seems they're doing pretty well with ukulele as well. Seems a good choice for a starting uke, but for around RM380 I preferred to choose other brands like Kala, Ohana, Lanikai. They're going around 240-300 for a starting Soprano. I myself still primarily play a Kala-15s
Its best if you go and test it out yourself if you like it.

Hello there! biggrin.gif

I'm learning by online materials too. Especially youtube videos.

And Ukulele is definitely the best string instrument for a lazy-bum like me, because there are only 4 strings to be tuned. tongue.gif

Hey ya! Thank you for setting up this informative thread about ukulele. The ukulele performance in Soul Sister really got my attention haha.

O Sungha Jung is back after a year. I had him signed on my guitar last year. XD

Btw, do have have the information about Mandolin? Like the one playing in If I Die Young.

Beginner ukers, once you gotten your instrument do let me know =D I'd love to know what choices you made.

@SpadesCloset, not sure if I could be helpful, but what info are you looking for on the mandolin?

Mandolin! Banjo too! I find that strings instruments have this unexplainable attractions for me. Love the sound that the strings make. biggrin.gif

I couldn't agree more!!

Hmm any kind of information is great, I think Mandolin is not that popular in Malaysia. So far, I never meet anyone that play or even owned that instrument. It deserves to be shared with.
I once worked in a music shop, but they do not have ready stock, I just roughly read on them on catalog and it just has a few of them.

Yup Mandolin and Banjo still not that popular among Malaysians. And Ukulele is just picking up its pace.

Hmm really sorry that I can't provide any helpful info on Mandolin. Truth is, I don't really know much about this baby, so it's best not to mislead you.

Well, may be some day. Some day it's not just admiring the sound but I might actually be able to play too. biggrin.gif
