MITI to announce cuts in duties for cars from Japan, Australia
By Daniel Khoo

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of International Trade and Industry will announce a cut in car duties from Japan and Australia on Thursday.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said on Wednesday the reduction would be over three years for car models originating from the two countries.

Speaking at the investKL media briefing, he said more details would be released on Thursday.

I think it should be excise duty. Import duty remain 30 percent maximum.

Ok Guys. Here is the thing, I bet they reduce import duty only for CBU ( Read properly, CBU. Not CKD ) From Jpn and Aus

Too early to speculate.

However, the original JMEPA (Japan Malaysia Economic Partnership Agreement) does include CBU, that means from Japan.

Again, need to wait for tomorrow for specifics.

That's why government has to start BRT project right away, as well procuring extra 1,400 buses for RapidKL alone.

Ultimately, Rapid buses initiative need to be introduced to more cities/towns in the country.

Most CBU cars are for high income group.

CKD Japan cars are consider local cars.

If CBU car were to be reduce, than it doesn't help much for the majority of people.

Not too sure how will it affect if they cut 10 - 15%...

CBU car generally 10 - 20k more exp... if they are going to cut it by 10%... I don't think it will mean by "much"...

Government plans 12 BRT lines for Klang Valley, but currently only Sunway project is active. Next one probably KL-Batu Tiga.

Penang government meanwhile envisions tram and BRT for island.

Then, JB, will get MRT.....................to Singapore.

I have my CDL license for ngam ngam 6 years now..

I will still drive my car unless the traffic is totally not moving..


I mean, you want people to use public transport, at least have some incentives to attract people to take train or bus mah..

hmm.gif it's still under planning , most probably takes at least 2 years time to complete .
even BRT has done , our car price will surely become lower (PR & BN Government promised ) ,

so that it will be a plus minus ending . BRT help decrease car amount on street & car price help increase car amount on street .

so conclusion is , we still have to suffer in traffic jam until 2017 at least .

Here is the issue.

What will the government cut?

Current import duty of 30% applies on CBU outside Asean.

If they cut that, then it will be the same as CKD within Asean, meaning people don't get to enjoy so much.

Will they touch excise duty?

Unlikely. They already say cars from Jpn and Aus. Excise duty cannot be selective, Must be blanket tariff

Toyota and Honda will still maintain price, then they get higher margins. They only give small 5% margin.

No excise duty for honda jazz hybrid but look at the price they sold, they get a lot of profit margin...

I want pakatan rakyat to disclose the real price of the car, the amount of tax imposed, how much profit goes to dealer..
Then, people can start put pressure on car dealer or boycott their product (yeah, consumer right, who want to pay for the overprice items)

By this means, we can effectively reduce our car price..

Even if currency is weak, Koreans can churn out cars at lower cost than Proton because they have much higher volume than Proton.

Even annual production of Forte alone is higher than the Proton.

Proton annual production does not exceed 200,000 per annum. Kia Forte alone sold 410,000 units in 2011.

currently what is dragging proton behind is lack of money...they need to sell more.....only way to do it is to sell it cheap....first remove all tax for proton cars....subsifizing is one of the way...risky but in the long run proton will get to where it should be...that time no need to subsidize also thry can makr cheap cars.....

now really cannot....hard for them to build it cheap...

1 more thing is design.....management problem so i cant comment much

We already losing our foothold as Asean auto centre since early 2000's due to delayed AFTA implementation.

Nowadays, foreign automakers would choose Thailand or Indonesia. However, it is absolutely crucial for Malaysia to liberalise its auto sector as the current policy, is part of the reason why automakers choose Thailand in early 2000's.

Frankly, Proton would be better if it is under the aegis of larger company, i.e VW. That said, Proton now banking on future GSC (Global Small Car). Lets see how it goes.

Not many models are built in Japan, especially at lower price range (unless if Mazda 6 segment).

Vios if CBU, is from Thailand. City, from Thailand. March also from Thailand.

Almera is Thailand if CBU, but then our market is Malaysia CKD.

excise duty cut by stages within 5 years starting year end

it means u still have to vote the current gov in power to make this happen

what kind of tax no announce yet.. for CBU model, import duty 30% while CKD 10% and excise duties 75-105% sales tax 10%. i believe no reduction on sales tax & excise duties but more on import duty only since MAFTA (malaysia-aussie free trade agreement) is same like AFTA. so probably will see abolition of import duty for the 1st 3 years.

30% import duty (1st year 15% drop) is small compared to the excise duty portion.. if you cant afford now, sure as hell wont afford next year.. biggrin.gif

The Competition Commission regarded car sales data sharing as illegal.

And then when it is said some car companies complained that VW sold car at lower price, why the CC did not do anything...

Its not so much the brand issue. RM 72k is definitely too pricey. Its not in that category, but its definitely a step up from Persona and Waja.
