First and foremost, again, MAINTENANCE.
After you apply wax/sealant, maintain the upkeep with regular wash, at least once a week if possible. Spray waxes/sealants (eg. DG Aquawax, Optimum Car Wax, Sonax Brilliat Shine, Dodo Juice Red Mist, Mothers Spray Wax, 3M Quick Wax Spray, etc.) would prolong the need to re-wax/re-seal if used after a couple of washes. Most importantly, they are very convenient to use and it would take only about 5min ~ 10min to apply. When I was using these combo, I only needed to re-apply 'proper' wax/sealant around every 4 months ~ 6 months or so, depending on the weather conditions and mileage. So, if you adhere to a proper maintenance regime, the annual polish/wax as 'recommended' my most automotive supplier *could* apply. If not, you'd most probably need to re-do monthly or bi-monthly, depending on the products used (provided that it's done properly). Complicated? A little....yeah. But to put simply, if you see the beading or sheeting of water aren't to your liking anymore, or when you see black/dirt streaks or stain not coming off after a wash, signs are the paint is in need of a fresh layer of protection.
Without any details of what product, tools, method, etc. you're planning on using, I can only suggest one thing - PATIENCE. DO NOT RUSH and make sure you allow ample time to finish the whole process. Good luck and have fun ya.
I have to admit I'm an avid fan of Meguiars when it come to polishes. Though I've tried quite a few other brands, Megs' polishes are ones that can always be trusted and worked *almost* every time when it's used for its intended purposes. Most of other brands are hit-and-miss for me. It could well be due to the fact that I'm kinda used to them and their workings but, if anything, Megs would be a good starting point to get to know about detailing.

Oh....and the 'looks great' is more like 70% skills/techniques and 30% product....just in case some products didn't work as expected/marketed.... tongue.gif

I just start to pickup this hobby, no super duper detailing work that I will do, but just want a clean and shinning car, need some sifu advise if i done something not right as my wax didnt last more than 2 week, here are the thing i do:
1. rinse
2. Wash with some un branded shampoo got from hypermarket
3. Rinse
4. Clay with 3M clay bar, use the shampoo as lubricant, go through the surface genially until no more roughness is felt when the clay was rubbed over it
5. Wash
6. Rinse
7. Dry
8. Apply DG Aquwax 951 on a dry MF towel and wipe it on the surface
9. Buff after 5minutes with MF towel

My car was park outdoor all the time, and is raining almost everyday in KL. I think the shin, smoothness and water repel effect is not that good after 1 wash or 2 weeks. Is there anything I done wrong? Or I should use better shampoo?

Result is blue sky reflection on surface is stunning .

Here you go. The camera capture less blue than naked eye can see but anyway is still good.
I just realized I got sun burnt on my back and a lot of small details thing not done properly; like polish over to the black plastic skirting and gaps and etc. But I am satisfy with my first time job. whistling.gif

Looks great! Did you use IPA or panel wipe after you polish your car? Or you just wax the car with Collinite #476 after polish?

Also, how's Osren 2.4? Thinking to buy this product too haha.
*
I buff of with MF after polish. Then apply Collinite #476 and buff with MF almost instantly, do it 1 panel at a time. After that apply DG aquwax. Maybe I should have let the Collinite to settle for a day before apply DG on top for better result, but I don't have a covered car park. If it rain, my hardwork will be wasted.
Osren 2.4 is a bit abrasive, you can easily polish off water mark, swirl marks and scratches with it. But it also means it can easily cut away your clear coat. I didn't proper polish my car in 5 years, using it 1 time for whole car I think should be ok. Else use Osren 2.0 for normal polish. I'm not expert, maybe some sifus can help.

Ok, continue from last week.
During wash, realize a few spots of polisher not buff off and already cover by Collinite. Try to buff it off after dry but couldn't, I guess Collinite already harden and covered it. Then use Osren 2.0 to polish it off, it comes right off without problem. Spent an hour plus on this panel by panel. Reapply Collinite and DG.

This round I have some Osren 4.0 to polish off stubborn water marks on side windows. Work like a charm, is like rubbing sand against glass, just 2 pass most of the water spots are gone. Add a layer Rain X on top. That is done for today.

Bloody hell, 1 hour later it drizzled and noticed it leave some dark substance after dry. Too busy to do anything about it. I think I need some quick detainers for job like this. I heard people also use ONR to do that kind of quick clean, spray on and wipe clean. Any comment? I didn't see many mention about ONR here.

Great stuff and quick economy if you getting the gallon version. For your glass/paintwork...i would suggest instead of keep cleaning, polishing (cutting), reapply product...why not do a layer of coating and maintain easier from there on...

I presume you don't have much weekend free time to spend on the car ?

I haven't try coating yet, I saw Permanon and Opti seal is very popular. I got a friend using one of this but watermark also will form after some time and he went back to ask the detailer, the guy said costing doesn't guarantee keep away watermark and scratches, it is just another layer of protection and last longer that normal wax. End up he need to go back for regular maintenance wash and clean, about rm30+ per week. Well he didn't like to get dirty himself, for him it is a solution for a sparking ride. I need more YouTube and Google on this.

My car been 5 years, I do regular wash but there is a lot of defects on it already; stone chip, watermark, scratches, swirl mark, dent and ding. Normally I spend 30min to clean it once a week, only these few week I try detailing, I consider it is an exercise and something fun.

jyan are ur paint looks similar to this? =P

I have a solid white color car, I face this problem all the time. It is form by dirty water (rain) on panels that water run off very slow like hood or roof. If you let the stain sits for few weeks, it is quite hard to come off. Proper polish is the way to go. If you wash once a week, should be very easy to wash it off.
