Hi guys,

I wrote an article on how to remove watermarks using clay bars. Its been raining a lot lately and I thought some of you might find this useful.

Enjoy biggrin.gif

Nice test. How long does it take you to finish that small section? Oh...and any sunshot (sun/light reflection shot) of that section after you finished claying?

Thanks.

I think it took me a good 20 minutes. That's including snapping all the pictures. blink.gif

No I didn't take any sunshots of the test area. It was in the evening and getting dark.

BTW what are you looking for with sunshots? Just the reflections of the sun or swirl marks? I know some detailers use standing lights to detect swirls. icon_question.gif

I have a few...when I was trying to find out what type of torches are best for defects finding I 'accidentally' got into torchlight craze as well....hehehe....
Just kind of wondering what kind of damage (if any) that kind of aggressive claying would do to the paintwork. Sunshot/pictures with torchlight/flash reflection would be able to reveal them (if any).

I don't even want to know if my claying affected the paint, cause if I knew I'll go crazy like you finding the right torchlight and polisher to get rid of any defects cry.gif And I know that will definitely burn a black hole in my bank account rclxub.gif

Another question, if I may. Did your claying remove the permanon as well? I was thinking maybe those waterspots are just sitting on the protection and haven't etched into the clear coat. Hence your claying removed the protection, together with all the waterspots with it. This is one of the role of protective coatings (may it be wax/sealant/coatings/etc.), to protect/minimize the clear coat underneath from damages. So, it might not work that well if there was no protection on the paint.

This is a hard one to answer. I agree that the waterspots is just sitting on the protection layer of Permanon and not even reached the clear coat and paint. But the thing with claying is that the surface will always be smooth when your done hence the assumption that the coating was scrape off when claying, and maybe the clear coat or paint as well (but I don't think so, that is why you have wet sanding and polishing for that). So its hard to tell especially when you have someone like me who coats the surface 3 layers every month, I only did this 3 month straight, and must have build up a full 1cm of coating (if that is even possible).

The only way to answer your question is to measure the thickness of the surface like Larry showed in this episode before and after doing the claying. At the moment I am blind, and clueless, as to how much my claying took out the coating. All I can assume is it did and I need to coat it 3 layers and do it 5 months straight shocking.gif Talk about being kiasu
