This is what I did to improve the cooling first. Those of u who haven't noticed. This silly ZTE modem runs extremely hot n I don't even use BT. Better go check ures too.

This is how the stock modem looks like. C those 2 red arrows? Stick the heatsinks there.

user posted image

1st I stuck a CM Blue Ice northbridge cooler on it minus the fan. The smaller RAM chip, I used a CM ramsink on it.

user posted image

This is the standard case. Very little ventilation. Look at the arrows, it's blocked for sum reason.

user posted image

This is after I cut out the vent holes.

user posted image

Same thing with the bottom. It's also blocked.

user posted image

Here's what I did to open up the vent holes.

Then I tot y not make an acrylic case to gif it sum bling bling. Also, even after modding the vents on the standard grey case, it was still very very hot. So I made a big huge acrylic case for it. The back panel where the wires plug in is left out so there's plenty of ventilation.

Here goes.

1st thing is to measure n draw out the pieces for cutting.

user posted image

Next is the cutting.

user posted image

Cutting complete. Then file all pieces to exact fit so the acrylic glue can bond them together. Here's the completed pieces ready for gluing. Just remove all the masking tape n start bonding the pieces. The modem circuit board is just double side taped to the bottom piece.

user posted image

Here's the complete case. rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

I'm not too happy about the basic looking square shape of the case though it looks quite nice. I'll be making another case using a single top piece that is bent around using heatgun. It's gonna look much, much better than this. This was just a NBTD to do 15 minute mod. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hahahha. Sitting around NBTD lar today. I really suck at circuit board electronics so I dunno where I can tap the power from for LEDs n all that. If only I knew where to tap, I'd add 2x 40mm fans for sum proper ventilation n also sum blue LEDs.

The first post is a repost from official hardware cooling thread....still can remember it cuz tht post is the first post i made wif pics....then u post ur cooling mod there....tht time i was pretty much a newbie biggrin.gif tongue.gif

IMHO...Tht modem case nids some more dynamic look instead of looking like a big ice cube...gotta have some nice curves...bling bling it and fan it...run a pair of 5 or 12v power line from ur molex to ur cube...use those thin wires as will bring less appeal...or get some transparent speaker cable...LED light reflecting off the clear insulating layer shud be a bonus when u add LED to it. Jus my opinion...dun flame me..

BTW..where did u got ur lil alu heatsink..tht tiny thing sitting on top the lil white piece.

can curi allngap's imac idea wat. spray the internal with white. let the front panel be transparent. then remove the LED lights from the circuit and replace it with allngaps blue SMD LED (correct if i'm wrong). that will look like those ET spaceship landed on earth.

it's not that much a matter of how hot but the matter of it not functioning properly after you leave it on for long time. Conclusions is that it will have problem when the chips are too hot. Since I leave my modem on 24/7, definitely will have problems. I find that almost all modems have similar problems.

It's crazy hot. The Broadcom chip, the big black 1 in the pix, I can't even keep my finger on it. It's that hot. The modem is on all day long but I don't BT yet it get's so hot. Even with the huge CM heatsink on it, still hot. I dunno if it's just mine. Y don't u try opening ure up n tell us if urs is hot too?

don't know about you guys, but my aztech has been running at home fore more than2 years dee. 24/7 BT(mom gets annoyed everytime she looks at the electric bill). no problem with the adsl modem but got plenty of problem with tmnuts. i place my modem on the icy floor so there is no heat issue. I think it depends on what chip you're using la.

atmost there, how did you managed to power up the fan? external ac adapter?

We've got an old 200W PSU which we use for all sorts of stuff as well as to test our mods. So the fan's hooked up to it. Unless we know which volatage to tap from since the AC adapter takes in about 18v, a bit too high for any fan

My ZTE modem already comes with 2 heat sinks. I guess the manufacturer knew about this and then added into later models. But it still is too hot. After few days it will cause problems.

I was thinking of opening the cover also but is afraid of accidently shorting or something. BTW, where did you get the power for your FAN? wire go back into casing?

???? What do u mean? The back panel doesn't exist. The acrylic case consists of only 5 panels meaning top, bottom, front, left, right panels. The back panel is left out so that there's ample ventilation n also to plug in the cables.

singchaii, u can try and find unused motherboard NB heatsinks. if ur willing to spend money, can just get the CM Blue Ice 1. if u REALLY NBTD, and REALLY willing to spend money, can get the CM Blue Ice 2 brows.gif

i think another good method would be to use the GC heatsinks+fan...tap the power for the fan from the adapter and u should be running nice and cool

and i mean GC heatsinks like this

not those bigger ones like on the 6800s n above. if u use them bigger ones dunno can fit or not
