this is going to be a super long post but here goes...

i'm using the 700 series (they sound good but everyone is giving me flak about how old fashioned they look, hey maybe i'm just old fashioned)....

here's some info on the 700 series that i shamelessly lifted from the B&W website...

QUOTE
Setting a new standard for this premium sector in both performance and design, the 700 Series comprises seven speaker models for both audio and home theatre applications. The choice starts with two floor-standing models (703 and 704) and one stand-mount model (705) for main speaker duty. Specialist centre (HTM7) and surround (DS7) speakers and two formidable subwoofers (ASW700 and ASW750) complete the line-up.

All models, with the exception of the DS7, are available in a choice of five real wood veneers - Maple, Cherry, Rosenut, Walnut and Black Ash - with main and centre models featuring curved one-piece top and front panels. The DS7 comes in a choice of black or white painted finishes.

The FS-700 speaker stand supports the 705 and the HTM7 centre speaker at the optimum listening height and is available in all black or in a combination of silver pillars with grey base and top.

It's attention to detail that makes these speakers stand out from the crowd. To our already impressive portfolio of technologies, we have added improvements to both driver and cabinet design that genuinely improve the listening experience in terms of accuracy of tonal character, resolution of fine detail and presenting a realistic sound stage between the speakers.

Xeno : that set doesn't have a decoder, you can't use it with the 360 on it's own. You need an amp/decoder

Can't Xeno just plug those speakers to the TV connectors (either audio out or headphones jack) without going thru an amp (since those speakers already have built-in amp)?

those speakers were creative labs' attempt to bring surround to the PC with the vibra 4d card before they have sb live with dolby digital 5.1. one jack is for front L/R and the other is rear L/R.

no offense but i think those rear speakers are practically useless without a PC sound card. u cant get surround on a game console since the analogue output is only stereo RCA. even if u were to hook it up to 5.1 analogue RCA (on a dvd player for example), u'd be missing the center channel and the subwoofer LFE. a receiver/amp can simulate a dolby pro logic setup with only 4 speakers by channelling the center to front L/R but your speakers are already powered, cant hook it up to amp.

you can buy RCA/3.5 jack splitters to jack both connectors in, all 4 speakers will have sound, but its not surround.

for 2.1 speakers you could always go with 2.1 pc speaker brands such as sonic gear and altec lansing...

however if you can increase your budget slightly (rm 699) and if you have the place for it, you can get a sony ht-ddw780 which is a budget 5.1 setup with amp but without a dvd player...
