as a HR, from my point of view.

I consider this a good rap sheet, since doing an online course needs dedication and self discipline.

and shows candidate willing to for extra mile to learn.

well, some might 'cheat' , and that's where interview comes to place.

but it's good to see something than nothing, right?
tips: especially when your resume has gap between to dates, e.g

2012 - graduated
2014 - part time worker

what the heck you were doing 2013?

Most of the online cert is just to show you have participate in the class.

However, in edx.org , you can pay some money and sit for the class FOR REAL. That mean, you have the do the homework, quiz, midterm and final. Then, you will actually get a letter grade (A or B or C or etc) . This cert can carry weight.

edx.org is a non-profit organization. I am not sure if the certification will have the name of the university on it because I have not paid money. But, I think you can try reading the FAQ or contacting them.
