Why would Samsung use this layout? It is because it uses roughly 1/3 less sub-pixels compared to traditional RGB layout. In another words, to cut cost. Also, due to the layout of pen-tile, one can argue that a 1080p pen-tile screen is NOT really 1080p, but less.

The digital signal to the display might be 1080p, the processor and all will process 1080p, but the output will be less than 1080p due to the layout.
